Chiefs Vs. Packers: 15 Things To Remember From The Game
I'm trying out a new idea for postgame stories where I just jot down various notes throughout the game and post it after the game. I did that last night in just the first half of the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Green Bay Packers game and came away with 15 things to remember about the game. (I did just the first half thinking the starters wouldn't play into the second...but I was wrong.)
It didn't turn out as interesting as I thought it would but oh well. Hopefully it'll get better instead of just a play-by-play. Here are 15 things to remember from last night's game:
- Chiefs captains: CB Brandon Flowers, LB Jovan Belcher, P Dustin Colquitt, RB Jamaal Charles, WR Dwayne Bowe and LT Brandon Albert.
- Rodney Hudson started at left guard in place of Ryan Lilja, who did not play.
- On the first play of the game, QB Matt Cassel went deep to WR Dwayne Bowe but the ball was overthrown. On the second play, Cassel quickly went to WR/RB Dexter McCluster which gained two yards. On the third play, they got some positive yards with a third down conversion via a pass to RB Jamaal Charles across the middle.
- The Packers first offensive play was a 23-year run to the right side of the Chiefs defensive line. DE Tyson Jackson didn't look great on that first series as he was pushed back on the following play, too.
- CB Javier Arenas returned the following kickoff back to the 45-yard line. He was awesome in the preseason last year at returning kicks. Let's hope it translates to the regular season.
- CB Charles Woodson was out and Cassel recognized that with a nice pass to Bowe for the first down taking advantage of the mismatch. Bowe was lined up on the right side and ran a quick slant, hauling the ball in right before he knew he was going to get hit. Nice concentration from Bowe, which seems to be a theme this year.
- Awesome, awesome grab by McCluster on a third down. McCluster lined up on the left side and ran a simple out route with Cassel slightly overthrowing him but McCluster dove to pull it in.
- Charles fumbled the ball on a pitch to the right. He was trying to push for another yard in the pile and got the ball stripped.
- Rodgers played just one series with backup QB Matt Flynn coming in on the Packers second series.
- Chiefs coach Todd Haley had a successful challenge. Packers WR Tori Gurley caught the ball over Flowers down the right sideline. As he gained possession of the ball, his second foot stepped out of bounds. It was pretty obvious. Trent Green thought it wouldn't be overturned but it was.
- Pretty entertaining end of the first quarter. First, the Packers had a botched snap that resulted in a safety for the Chiefs. Second, P Dustin Colquitt hit WR Terrance Copper on a fake punt. It was 3rd and 9 and they got 11.
- Another great catch by McCluster that went for a touchdown. He leaped in the air to make the grab falling down over the goal line. So...McCluster is a running back? That's two great catches in the game.
- The trickery continues with an onside kick. Unfortunately, the Packers recovered.
- I love seeing corner blitzes. CB Brandon Carr came from Flynn's blindside and drilled him popping the ball loose with the Chiefs recovering. Arenas was a great blitzer coming out of college as well.
- On the theme of awesome catches, Bowe has a terrific touchdown catch on a fade route. He got both his feet in, just barely dragging his second foot in bounds. The play was reviewed and...it's a touchdown!

"The Packers first offensive play was a 23-year run to the right side .."
Now THAT’S a long run!
If you can sack groceries, you can sack a QB... right?
The kool-aid is now Berry flavored.
Felt like 23 years watching it.

Bowe caught it & “might” have got both feet in but….
If Bowe wants to live up to his reputation of being a physical WR he can’t get pushed around by a smaller Cb… IN THE ENDZONE

preseason or not
Why in the blue moon can the nfl put 4 camera’s on the end zones & all of them pointing on the lines to get better views of every reviewed td this year

He was working the sideline
and the pass was right where it needed to be. If he tried to be physical the catch probably wouldn’t have been there. lol

#16
Todd Haley apologizing to Mike sherman at the end of the game. 1 can assume it was for trying to get game film of Palko in the 2 min drill to win the game.

Blaming #3 on Jackson?
He didn’t look great the first series but #96 got manhandled by a TE which is what made that giant hole.

Are the Chiefs trying really hard to give the back up QB spot to Palko?
I know there are more important things than backup QB and I’m not at practice everyday, but it seems that Stanzi has looked everybit as good (if not better than Palko) and with way more upside. Yet is seems the Chiefs are set on giving Palko a majority of the reps. Do they have their minds made up already?
Also, Bailey seems to have a pretty bright future. How long before it take over for Jackson?
It was said all over the threads last night, but we can repeat it here:
Stanzi has a job; Palko was playing for his.
People kept saying this
But unless a quality QB gets released this week, I think they’re actually going with Palko as our #2 QB.
by Chatch McNasty on Sep 2, 2011 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions
I think they just don't want to throw a rookie in there
If someone has to close out a game with Cassel out, I think they want to go with Palko. If Cassel got hurt for multiple games, I hope they’d consider giving Stanzi a shot.

Did Baldwin make the trip to Lambeau?
I was once fired from a job two days after I waited on Matt Cassel and his wife Lauren Killian. Totally my AP moment to remember. Unfortunately also one of my stupidest moments.

I bet McCluster makes a couple of key receptions every game he plays. He's gonna make some LBs look silly in coverage.

I think he will be just as important as Bowe in our offense....

It's nice to see out of him too.
I think after his camp last year that’s what we all expected out of him so it’s nice to see him slowly putting it together on the field on gameday.

I was disappointed with the McCluster pick, and didn't think he would do much
However, I may be wrong. He has been looking awesome in the preseason
The Chiefs had the 29th ranked passing game in the league last year.
It doesn't matter if our QB has a good TD/INT ratio.
We're in the same boat.
I wanted Jacoby Ford instead.

learned real quick last night
Pack brought the blitz everytime he lined up in the backfield with no fb or te in to block
That’s why you saw the te in tight or pro style shotgun in the 2 min drill
Mc can’t pick up the block
by backbone313 on Sep 2, 2011 12:59 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Yup. I also noticed Palko being real quick to throw into the blitz several times.
Looked like he’d been specifically/recently coached on that. Probably my favorite thing he did last night. Let the RB/slot guy go past the blitzer, get his head around, catch the lob and take off.

He's actually really good at picking it up.
Problem is he gives up 70-80 lbs if the guy coming is a LB and 25-35 lbs if its a safety/cb

AT this point the defense is SCARING me far more than the OFFENSE….WE HAVE PRETTY MUCH THE SAME ENTIRE 11 STARTING EXCEPT FOR AN UPGRADE AT NT…..but we are getting marched on by every 1st team offense we face…….THE OFFENSE IS GONNA COME ALONG A LIL SLOW …NEW OC…AND NEW PLAY CALLING STYLE, mixed with changes on the oline….. I UNDERSTAND THAT….. but the defense goin backwards!!!!!!! NO EXCUSE 4 that…..ROMEO BETTER BE BEATING DOWN PIOLIS DOOR ….SO THAT HE WILL SCAN THESE UPCOMING CUTS AND GRAB SOME DLINE HELP AND ANOTHER BACKER……OH AND STUDEBAKER IS REALLY SORRY AS HELL….I SEE WHY HE COULD NEVER BEAT OUT OLD SLOW ASS VRABLE…..HE SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!
what play or plays are you talking about?
I don’t recall Brandon being beat last night.
It's great to finally trust the men making the important decisions at 1 Arrowhead Drive.
there were a couple, one was where we challenged the play and it was eventually overturned-foot on the line
There was no way to defend that pass, Flowers was right with Gurley
I believe thats who the WR was, Flynn put the ball out ahead and the WR almost made a great catch.

That may be a little heavy handed....
but we are getting marched on by every 1st team offense we face
Last night we allowed 122 yards on 42 plays from scrimmage. I’d say there has been a steady defensive improvement. It’s the turnovers; and the offense’s ability to punt 3 times more than they sustain a good drive.

Packers looked good on their first drive so did the Rams
Rodgers went out and once STude was replaced the defense looked much better, the Rams went down the field again but the defense started to tighten up after that

Yes
And you may single out one or two guys, on one or two plays, and that is really what I was talking about, in terms of allowing the play to develop in their area of play. However, this is bound to happen. It is. Even against good, “elite”, defenses. They may only allow a FG off of it, but they are bound to happen once or twice. My issue is with our offense coming away with a few of those early as well. If not to gain the lead, then to respond…

In the Rams and Packers games the big runs against our D to start the game came off STude's side
I have not rewatched the Packers game(reairs Sunday night) to see who let that play break open but I believe it was STude yet again. Houston has been an improvement whenever he has taken over for STude in every phase of the game

I under stand you meant just 1st string offense
but, even then, one play can make or break a drive. Our first team D can’t fend off those big plays early on. That IS a problem. But I seen the opposite in greater effect. Effect, because they (our first string offense) are not causing the same “big, early, impact plays” on the opposing D.

Fake punt in a 3rd and 9 situation?
No wonder it worked….completely threw them for a loop.

If Houston starts over Studie
We can ride our D to the playoffs. Gordon is gonna do some work this year. Bowe looks just as good as last year, if not a little better. Teams won’t be eager to attack BRich’s side after Dex slides out of the backfield on them or we run off guard and let BRichs guy run upfield and out of the play. We’ll be fine
by RamX21 on Sep 2, 2011 2:06 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
I am not buying
the Palko was playing for a job idea. The entire motive behind everything has been conditioning thus far. Our core players are the only ones in the NFL I believe to play an entire game for the most part, and in the event of a Cassel injury, Haley wanted Palko to have a half under his belt. Stanzi did not play because I feel like Haley does not see him playing right now even with an injury to Cassel. I dont know this for sure, but it makes a lot more sense than some of the other theories out there. We have seen the last of Stanzi for the year if my gut is right.
by Steve_in_RI on Sep 2, 2011 2:07 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
I think
the point was that Stanzi being 3rd is kind of a given at this point, but if Palko couldn’t prove he is worthy of being a 2nd string QB, then why keep him? Thus he was playing for a job. If they were satisfied, which is questionable, then he should be fine. If not, I think they will aggressively search the waiver wire for a better backup.
And I guess my point
is that I think Haley already made his mind up that Palko has a job and was priming him for real minutes. I love Haley but who knows what is in his head. I was just looking at an alternative viewpoint.
the chiefs are in big trouble
GB’s 3rd string beat our 1st
To me it looked like our guys beat themselves.
2 fumbles and a pick 6 for 13 points, and I think their offense gained 1 yard during that.
Nice recap but....
Second, P Dustin Colquitt hit WR Terrance Copper on a fake punt. It was 3rd and 9 and they got 11.
We punted on 3rd down?
STOP THE MADDNESS!!!!!!! Our beloved CHIEFS will be fine!
Lets cut these 27-guys and move forward so our 53 Men get better by having all the snaps. We will be more than fine. Our weaknesses have been highlighted and now we can adjust…

ONE THING I SEE RIGHT NOW……WE ARE MISSING SHAUN SMITH AND BRIAN WATERS….BOTH OF THOSE GUYS BRING CHARACTER 2 the LOCKER ROOM AND VETERAN LEADERSHIP…..AND LAST YEAR SHAUN SMITH WAS DEFINITELY THE 2ND BEST DLINEMAN ON THE SQUAD BEHIND ….Glenn Dorsey aka Mr Relevant……..our run d has been shredded the last 2 weeks….we need BAILEY 2 really step up or TJACK 2 ACTUALLY PLAY LIKE AN NFL PLAYER 4 MORE THAN A FEW SNAPS A GAME…..I STILL SAY WE WIN THE AFC west…..but we got some loose ends that need tieing up……
