I know this is surpirsing and may have a tint of Kool Aid from the most surprising source, myself. Last week we mentioned how the 1989 Steelers how they lost to the Browns at home 51-0 and then followed up with a 41-10 loss to the Bengals on the road (92-10 vs 89-10 for us). As hopeless as they looked week 3 they stunned the Vikings 27-14 when the Vikings were a Super Bowl contender (guess who may be our first win?). This got me to thinking about another disastrous start that we should as Chiefs fans be somewhat familiar with, the 2001 Redskins. More after the jump.
The 2001 Redskins were Marty Schottenheimers first crack at HC after taking 2 years hiatus from the Chiefs. His team was, well, very un-Marty like:
Week 1 3-30 loss to the Chargers
Week 2 0-37 loss to the Packers after 9/11 layoff
Week 3 13-45 loss to the Chiefs and Vermeils fist and only win for the 1st 7 games, at FEDEX
Week 4 9-23 loss to the Giants, I remember how excited the national media was that the Redskins didn't get blown out and were finally competitive until late in the game
Week 5 7-9 loss on Monday night to the winless Cowboys
Week 6 17-14 OT win vs the Panthers who were in the midst of a 15 game losing streak.
From there Marty rallied the Redskins after benching Jeff George who was a disaster for mid season pick up Tony Banks (David Garrard?) who looked left for dead after being cut for Quincy Carter by the Cowboys. The Redskins even beat the Eagles, hammered 2000 division champion Saints 40-10 in their own house and finished 8-8 (the best record of any team with an 0-5 start, 2009 Titans and 1981 Redskins duplicated this as well).
Can this years Chiefs rally? It certainly would put Haley in a new light.
