He was picked up by Kansas City in Herman's last year. He lead the NCAA in sacks in 2006 with 17.5 and was 1st team Division III All-American. His senior year at Wheaton College was cut short by injury, but he was able to have a most impressive draft workout.
He spent his first year on the practice squad. He has spent the last two years behind the perfect mentor, Mike Vrabel. Mike was past his prime, but a past super bowl champion. Mike has the intelligence and dedication that few possess and seemed to pass his wisdom to young Andy. If there ever was a perfect scenario for an established veteran to pass the torch to a developmental player, this was the perfect scenario. />
The NFL is a developmental league. Outside of the first few rounds of the draft, the other players must be developed. Look at the Chiefs historically. Mike Maslowski, Devon Cherry, Tony Richardson, Tony Richardson, Bill Kenney, Rich Gannon, Brian Waters have all been low round or undrafted free agents that have contributed to Chiefs success. Andy with Romeo's help was to be the next in line.
Justin Houston was drafted to provide competition for Andy. At the combine and during the preseason he looked to be elite moving forward as a pass rusher. However he looked very pedestrian in coverage. Andy seemed to be the man on 1st and 2nd down with Justin showing his mad rush skills on 3rd down.
It took just one game for the transiton to take place. What conclusions can we draw
First of all, outside of our early draft choices ; Hali, Johnson, Charles and Bowe have you seen any marked development in any of our players?
Secondly, If we are unable to develop later round picks, we have to rely upon free agency (where Clark is verrrry frugal) and undrafted free agency (in which we sign few top prospects)in order to build our team. We therefore have a gulf that is widening between our starters and reserves. That is why when Berry and Moeaki are lost for the season we are there searching for Anthony Becht while Green Bay had Donald Lee and Andrew Quarless. The Packers found Frank Zombo and Sam Shields as well as James Starks and Matt Flynn as UDFAs who contributed significantly to their team. Outside of Belcher and Gilberry who they took from the Giants are any UDFA contributing?.
So Chiefs fans, although I know it is only one game and only one player is isolated, do you agree with the premise?
