Chiefs Vs. Lions: One Detroit Defensive Player You Should Know

PrintWeek 2 in the 2011 NFL season will see the Kansas City Chiefs traveling to play the Detroit Lions and one of the focuses in the game will be the Lions defensive line. The headliner, obviously, is DT Ndamukong Suh but there's also DE Kyle Vanden Bosch and DT Corey Williams.
One guy we haven't really talked about is DE Cliff Avril. I talked with SB Nation's Pride of Detroit, asking which player Chiefs fans don't know but they should, and they noted Avril.
One player who seems to get overlooked a bit is defensive end Cliff Avril. With so much talent on the D-line, the position group gets a lot of love as a whole, but on an individual basis Ndamukong Suh seems to grab most of the headlines. He obviously deserves the recognition, but Avril deserves some love as well. He had 19 sacks during his first three seasons, as well as eight forced fumbles. Last year, he recorded 8.5 sacks in only 13 games. He is an excellent speed rusher and is someone who can make plays when he gets by his man and into the backfield.
Great. Another up-and-coming on this defensive line for the Chiefs to deal with.
How the Chiefs handle this defensive line will tell us a lot. They've struggled against teams built similarly along the defensive front so will they continue the trend of getting beat up front, or have they identified the problem and, more importantly, fixed it?

I promise, i’ve always warned my friends about this guy for 3 years.. Saying he needed just a little better supporting cast to be great.. And i think he has it. I just hope KC shuts him down.. I hope Gaither can play tomorrow and be effective.

Having a dominate player like Suh in the middle..
makes everybodies job easier. Other lineman/LB get freed up because they have to show Suh so much attention. Also, with the pressure he gets on a QB, it makes the secondary have to cover for a shorter amount of time….which is one of the Chiefs main problems on Defense. No pressure upfront means the QB can wait til a receiver comes open…..even the BEST CB, can only cover for 4-5 seconds, after that, someone is bound to be open…..IT ALL STARTS ON THE LINES
Playoffs are a REAL possibility in 2010...just need few tweeks here and there.

Rec'd !!!! For absolute truth & as a history buff, I love the pic.
Time & time again we see the unavoidable importance of trenches come to the forefront.
I have not lost my faith in the Pioli / Haley regime….yet.
But my god, so many examples, last year’s playoff game the most glaring; you either have strong trenches that allow you the ability to build a win…..or you don’t.
Even with an average supporting cast, if your team has BULLS in the trenches, you can control the game & beat a team down over 3.5 quarters, allowing for an easy kill of a wounded & exhausted team in the final minutes.
Or as the Ravens did last year, just dominate the trenches from the get-go & win the game before it starts.

Vanden Bosch is probably the weakest player on the front.
Age is starting to catch up, but he is still very smart.

Didn’t see a lot of this last week, & with this week’s brutal defensive front, I wondered if the AP crowd was expecting more quick hit attacks- straight ahead with the heavies ?

I think the focus should be the Lions new LB corp.
Avril is not a run stuffer, but the linebackers are, IF we can stop your guy’s run game…that will be the key.
