Chiefs Vs. Lions: Injury Report Includes Jonathan Baldwin, Calvin Johnson
There were no changes to the injury report for the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions game this weekend. Wednesday's report is identical to Thursday's, with the exception of DE Kyle Vanden Bosch, who takes Wednesdays off, coming off the injury report on Thursday.
For the Chiefs, that means WR Jonathan Baldwin is still not practicing after suffering a thumb injury about a week ago. There's no word on when he might return, how he's progressing or anything like that. I would guess he's likely to be out, or very limited, this Sunday agains the Lions, missing his second consecutive regular season game, but the Chiefs will confirm that this afternoon.
For the Lions, there are some important names on there. Those that didn't practice on Thursday include S Louis Delmas (hip), DT Nick Fairley (foot), T Jason Fox (foot) and WR Calvin Johnson (ankle). Those that were limited in practice include CB Alphonso Smith (foot) and WR Maurice Stovall (hand).
It sounds like Johnson (a/k/a Megatron) is going to be playing. At least that's what he says. We'll get the final word from the Lions on him this afternoon.
This afternoon we'll get the probable/questionable/doubtful/out designations for the injured guys.

Calvin Johnson had better play.
Matthew Stafford is my starting QB, and I’m up against Brandon Pettigrew. No Calvin to throw to could screw me twice.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
Jesus, no one gives a shit about your fantasy team

Damn I hate agreeing with HIV, but DUDE!
That was a real idiot thing to post on a Chiefs site. Nobody on here wants CJ to play! Moron.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
I'll take the excuses.
We need a win, and we will get it a lot easier without Johnson.
I don't have a catchy, catch phrase.
Thank you.
I get tired of, “Oh, I want to play them at full strength.” Bullshit. The Chiefs aren’t at full strength, so why should we want our opponents at full strength? I couldn’t care less if people want to make excuses, as long as we win.

So I'm totally pumped for kickoff last Sunday
..and my girlfriend and I are at the sports bar in our town to catch the game. Another Chiefs fan joins us at the table and the game starts…
Dexter Fumbles the opening kickoff. I’m stunned. I Could not believe he coughed up the opening kick off of the season. This guy turns to me and says
“Well at least I have the Bills Defense.”

I'm usually the one defending fellow FF players...
But I hope Stafford feels the pain move from our bodies to his this Sunday. FEEL THE PAIN!

I'm not too impressed with Haley's impression of Jones.
Preparing to welcome a future Chiefs fan in December... football season and fatherhood somehow go together.
Me either.
He’s one of my backup WRs in FF.

Are going to be a BAD FF team if you drafted Baldwin! OMG. Who’s your QB? Cassel? LMAO.

20 team league, 30 draft picks
QB’s Mark Sanchez. Baldwin was a very, very late round pick on the off chance that he might do something this year.

Ya...
I wonder if Baldwin’s been able play Madden with his boo-boo thumb?
At least he could get comfortable with Cassel and build some unity.

Honestly ...
I’ve got to admit, I’d be alright with Johnson not playing.
Pettigrew is likely to be the bigger threat anyway, given our Safeties, but not having Johnson on the field might free up a defender to help bracket Pettigrew a bit.
are there people that wouldnt be ok with him sitting?

Its ok.. Johnson will be playing.
Go Chiefs!!!!
Still confused on why they didn't put him on PUP.
He will have missed two games and isn’t likely to contribute much for several weeks after he comes back. Put him on PUP for 6 weeks and sign someone else for the OL or TE help.
I believe once a player practices...
You can not put them on PUP. You can only put them on IR which would end their seasons. PUP is for recovering on previous/offseason injuries before they practice.
Please someone correct me if I’m wrong

PUP is only for players that come into camp injured.
If injured in camp you need to be either on the roster or IR.

If Baldwin isn't practicing after a month
he must have really messed his thumb up. I understand not catching passes or doing limited weight training, but for him to not even be running routes (heck even shadow routes on the sidelines) is hard to imagine.
I hope once he does return, he can show us he was worth a first-round pick.
Doubtful.
Rookie WR’s rarely make a big contribution anyway. Missing as much time as he has will likely make him a role player this year. He could be the exception, but doubtful.
If Baldwin runs a few deep routes and Cassel even attempts to get him the ball..that is an impact we need
Baldwin doesn’t have to go for 100/1000/10 this year to have an impact.

Cassel could make "attempts" with anyone on the field.
Unless they are actually completing some, no team will be concerned. For Baldwin to have any impact, he will have to demonstrate he is a threat. Otherwise, he is just another guy with single coverage.
Which is why Baldwin is a threat as soon as he steps on the field
The guy can run, can jump, and has shown good hands. IF Cassel even takes a few shots deep, he may over throw Baldwin but if Baldwin gets behind the CB/S… defenses will play a S deeper to make sure they attempt to stop the next deep throw

Baldwin possesses a skill set that no other Chiefs receiver has.
That alone makes him valuable on the field, even if he can’t necessarily make a huge impact in the stat department this year.
Not to sound like I’m making excuses for Cassel, but count me among those who think the problems in the passing game have a little more to do with our receivers’ lack of ability to beat press coverage and create separation. Baldwin has the skills to do that if he can get healthy. Whether that’s enough to make much of a difference considering how woeful our passing attack was against the Bills is another question.
We have not had a deep threat in a while
If Baldwin/Breaston can get behind the defense and Cassel shows that he will go deep, that does force a defense to keep someone deep.
As for the Cassel vs WRs, there have been several times noted last year and even Urban is a great example in the Bills game of a WR being open but Cassel just does not see them in time.

A few choice instances don't prove that it's all Cassel's fault.
I don’t like Cassel that much, and I would be very surprised if he ended up being the long-term answer at QB, but he’s only 1/2 of the passing game. You can’t seriously be implying that every failed pass play is because Cassel just didn’t see the guy that was wide open?
This would be extensive research, but I’m willing to bet that a much higher percentage of the failed pass plays from last Sunday were plays in which no one was markedly open to throw to. It’s easy to pick one play and say “Hey, that guy was really open and Cassel didn’t throw to him. Cassel sucks,” but I think this team is dealing with a very serious quality of talent problem at WR and they’re suffering for it.
I said there were plenty of examples last year that a target was wide open and Cassel didn't see him
Like the Jags game for example(best one that comes to mind) Dex goes uncovered over the top of the defense, Cassel looks at Bowe the whole time, ends up trying to force it to him and it goes out of bounds…
Part of it is WR issues, part of it is Cassel’s. You can look at good QBs and they will throw their WRs open, you can look at the best WRs and they still have to have a QB give them a chance.
