It's not just the loss to the Bills...what makes me so frustrated is the sense of Groundhog Day that I'm seeing as the season opened with the exact dull thud I've feared all offseason. I was chastised for saying we backed into the playoffs last year, but it's not disputable now. But we did look like a team on the rise, and that was encouraging. And then came the draft and offseason and FA...and we did our usual thing- diddly squat.
I've been a Chiefs Fan since Len Dawson played, and I suffered through the 80's, got hopeful in the 90's, and ever since have had to watch this cycle repeat itself over and over and over. Overpay for one or two overrated players and then cycle reject journeymen through the rest of the team that is perennially a 6-10 or 7-9 quality team.
Today it's Matt Cassel, who is proving no better than Damon Huard or Jay Fiedler. Yesterday it was Larry Johnson, a punk who should never have been resigned. He was only as good as the holes Willie Roaf and Brian Waters opened for him, and the minute Roaf went, he sank like the turd he was. Before that it was Elvis Grbac or "Sonny" Bono. Sometimes we've gotten lucky, Trent Green had a few good years (and a few really bad ones before that), and Priest Holmes had a quick, but great stopover here. But none of these do a team maketh.
Like many Chiefs Fans, I could not wait for Carl Peterson to go. The year he resigned the league's worst defense was the day he should have been tarred and feathered. To say nothing of his appalling hire of Gunther Cunningham as a fan disrespecting placeholder head coach. When Scott Pioli came in, I was as happy and hopeful as could be. There are two ways to build a team, through Free Agency as the Eagles have done, or through the draft as the Pats have done, which I think we all assumed Pioli would do. No one is complaining about Eric Berry, but what galls me is that nothing was done to meaningfully upgrade either the O or D lines. You just don't win in this league with lackluster lines.
And lastly there is Todd Haley. I was high on him coming in, but he looks more and more like a screaming Gunther Cunningham getting tuned out by his team. If this season unfolds as it looks like it might, 5-11 or 6-10, then we're going to be right back at Square One, cleaning house and starting over...AGAIN!
So, I'm not negative, I'm just very, very discouraged AGAIN!
