Welcome to Chiefs Therapy
Leader: Welcome to Chiefs Therapy. A lot of new faces tonight. Let's start by going around the room at telling each other about ourselves and what's on our minds. Who is first?
Me: I'll go. The name is Christian. I am 23 year old blue collar Kansan. Been a die-hard Chiefs fan since day one. Not sure how the fan hood started, but it did, and has never died or waiver despite that for the majority of my memorable life, the Chiefs have been average at best, with only a few miserable playoff games played. I am the type of fan that is almost always the eternal optimist. I live and die by the Chiefs. Weekends are ruined by loses, weeks are started off great with wins. Arrowhead Pride is visited more than a dozen times a day, mid-season, preseason, off season, regardless. I have been a season ticket holder for two years. I love the Arrowhead experience, despite the fact that in the last 11 home games I have been to, I have seen 1 win. 1-11. At least it was MNF opener last year though right. Frustrating? No more sad in my opinion.
It’s been two days since I attended our home opener against the Bills. It was pretty sad. At first I was frustrated, mad, and angry, but that slowly turned mostly to sadness and slight depression. This continued into Monday and Tuesday where work just drug on and the Chiefs game, and the state of the Chiefs was the only constant on my mind. Usually a good night’s sleep helps me forget, but Sunday was different. Sunday was different. It was demoralizing. I am sad, for many reasons:
1- Chief’s fans (fans being those who are not quite as die hard as I am, not meaning to sound cocky) are fickle. They often over react, and are quick to pass judgment. This was seen first-hand Sunday in 2 instances. The first were two mid-30’s men sitting behind me. When we were down 0-14, they left, saying they were going to sell their season tickets and the year was over. I didn’t believe it, but they never came back. 0-14, that is certainly overcomeable I think. Most would. At half in the bathroom the discussion turned quickly to the Andrew Luck sweepstakes, which at half we were apparently the front runner. What? 1 game. 15 other teams are 0-1. 6 of them are playoff teams from 2010. Where is the optimism people? It is 1 game. If we can recover, and come back Sunday and compete, and hopefully win, what will fans say then? That we are winning the Super Bowl? Why can’t my fellow Chiefs fans be optimistic realists? I fear residual effects from this game. People sell tickets. Stadiums are empty, or worse, filled with the opposing teams fans. The fan intensity is not there (which it was to start Sunday’s game. I was tomahawking walking into the stadium!!). We lose home field advantage with our crowd. Fans, let’s not let this happen. Stay optimistic, stay supportive.
2- Eric Berry’s injury saddens me greatly. I wear his jersey every week. After last year’s MNF game (remember my only win in the last 11 games) I didn’t wash that jersey once until the year was over. (Ok, it’s a superstition) But what an affect this will have on our team. McGraw and Sabby do not at this point in time seem to be viable replacements. But let’s give them a shot. Maybe our D line can compensate creating more pressure on the QB (where was that Sunday). Let’s be honest. Eric’s injury is huge, but it does not have the magnitude of an injury like Peyton. Like many witty media members have said, Peyton could win MVP by not playing all year. Berry does not have that type of impact. Peyton’s loss could be the difference between 10 wins and 2. Berry on the other hand, might only be worth 1 or 2 wins. Let’s not dwell on how his injury affects us now. Instead let’s hope that he comes back strong next year, with no residual effects. He is a hell of a talent and it’s a shame to see him hurt, but boy doesn’t he have the right attitude "Minor setback for a Major Comeback." Fans, take notes, take that attitude.
3- It saddens me, that being a small market team generate little to no national media coverage, until Sunday. Getting blown out the worst on opening day, generate attention, negative attention. Stevie Johnson (God made him do it remember) tweets and that gets attention. Berry gets hurt, that gets attention. When we do good things, we are rarely, RARELY featured on ESPN, or talked about by the experts. But last night on Sportscenter, Scott VanPelt talked Eric Berry vs. God made me do it for about a minute and a half. In that short time he managed to mention the Chiefs getting blown out. Negative press. Our representation by the national media is now negative. And people often remember the negatives a lot sooner than the positives. I hate the limited media attention we get, but I even more dislike the negative press. Here is to hoping the Chiefs come out against Detroit, and in the remaining 14 games and compete. At least compete! Won’t we all feel better if we are in games and have chances to win? Being in games leads to wins. As I have been reminded today, we were blown out twice last year. Surely there was plenty of negativity then too. Let’s focus on the future and see how we react. The sky is not falling! Even if the national media, Florio, and Whitlock think it is for the Chiefs.
Leader: Wow. A lot on your mind tonight. Feel better?
Me: For the first time since Sunday at 12:02 pm, yeah a little bit. More hopeful than anything (this is also in part to the post by Aiken_Drum really good work. Great read. Gives great hope. (Link at end of page.)) Can’t wait (Bart Scott style) for Sunday and Detroit. This team has resolve in my mind, and is led by a strong head coach in Haley. I think we will like what we see, win or lose, and will get rid of this nasty taste in our mouths.
Leader: A lot of season left. Thanks for your take. So who is next? Surely the rest of you around this circle tonight need to get something off your chests…..
Thanks again Aiken_Drum: http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2011/9/13/2419673/kansas-city-chiefs-2011

nice post, christian
sounds like you have your head on straight … very cool, young man
just beware: Aiken partakes of the magic elixer known as Koolaid … it can be a more evil drug, that! it blinds one to reality, it’s addictive like many other drugs, and like others makes one feel oh-so-good … but then reality sets in, and all too often reality is such a letdown that it hurts
you seem to be beyond the ledge-jumping. the wagon-hopping, the all is lost crowd, and good for you! but beware the evils of Koolaid Overdose … and Aiken, he is my Brother, and he is a charmer when he wants to be, but he is a Snake Oil Koolaid Salesman who wants you and everyone to partake of the Koolaid and wear the holy glasses of the color rose … beware of getting so high that you hurt yourself if you fall, as so many have done … the fickle fans, indeed … too high, way too high and they suffered that unholy drop of the loss
take care my friend, and if someone says “stay thirsty” and offers you a red drink, take care that it’s not poison

heh, ty
a good bit of that was just plain silliness, of course, but chris points out what happens when fans get overly optimistic … I’ve seen too much in the way of super high expectations, and a loss like Sunday’s can lead to a huge letdown (and some unbelievable comments the last few days)
that’s why I choose to take the cautiously optimistic road, the wait and see just how good we are (or aren’t) path … what Aiken does works for him (though I suspect he was pitching bottles at the TV) and what I do works for me … whatever works, right?
but I really hate to see the negativism that’s been invading the site lately … one game and the world is upside down for a lot of people
and so it goes …

Thanks man. Appreciate it. I like to think my head is on at least half straight.
I will not drink the kool aid. I do consider myself a realist optimist. My expectations were 9-7, realistically optimistic. We Chiefs have weaknesses, but we are talented. I pray Sunday was an aberration. After a 10-6 year, there are expectations. And playing a 4 win Bills team made those expectations greater for Sunday. I would say my fall is often not due to the kool aid elixer, but just because somewhere in my journey as a fan the Chiefs have become one of my only addictions, whether good or bad. Despite my passion, and any realistic expecations, I will forever remain the same fervent fan, 16-0, 0-16. No matter the players, the coaches, anything. I love my Chiefs, Our Chiefs.

Are you referring to the Jim Jones of AP?
Not referring to anyone in particular? And even if was in the process of referring to a particular AP bully poster, I’m also in the process of determining how I could not name any poster that might fit that description. Even though it could be any poster that I may, or may not be, referring to, I shall remain true to implementing the process of developing a policy of not referring to any particular poster by name, however.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
also...
While Aiken was throwing bottles at the TV, I sat in 108, Row 20, seat 14, starting blankly at the field wondering where our 10-6 team went, how bad Berry was hurt, how disappointing it was that the stadium was half empty, and thinking Sunday vs Detroit is going to tell me a lot about this team, win or loss.
Detroit will tell us more.............
trying to be cautiously optimistic

agreed, christian ... I think Aiken mentioned it in his post yesterday: character ... how does this team respond, what do they do after a game like last week
Sunday vs Detroit is going to tell me a lot about this team, win or loss
I want to see a fired up Chiefs team … I’d love us to win, I understand if we lose to a very good and talented Lions team, as long as we play our collective tails off all 60 minutes of the game

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
You are welcome christianlog
Thank you for your approval. I know that Ups thinks I lie to myself and live in a complete fantasy world, but it is not true. You can be optimistic and hopeful without being blind to some realities. It’s all about how you position your reception of the message. In this case the message is called Chiefs football.
Seriously, than you for the shout out.
"You gonna pull them pistols...or whistle Dixie?"
Yeah man keep the good stuff coming!
I live on this site and get so tired of negative attitudes. So glad other are optimistic, even if it is just cautious optimism. I am pretty much an amateur on here as far as posting but I am definitely jealous that you are a contributor. Seems like it would be challenging and fun. Not that being a contributor is a full time job, but man I would love a job that let me eat breathe and sleep Chiefs, not so a bunch of crap like I do now!

I hate to bust your bubble
but contributors don’t get paid for our work. We just love the Chiefs and it drives us to do the posts that we do. You keep working on it and you could eventually become a contributor yourself.

he could! excellent writing style and prose ... reminds me of MNchiefsfan

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
that is what I figured.
I didn’t figure there was anyway you got paid. Would just be awesome to be part of the ArrowheadPride contributor family. Seeing my thoughts and opinions on that main page would be all the compensation I need. Obviously the ultimate job for me would be a Chiefs related job that paid, but those are few and far between for an average guy like me. I will try to keep the relative and insightful posts coming.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Lions' fan here
I think that I have written several articles very similar to this one on the Pride of Detroit site over the years, so I most definitely feel your pain. It is both heartbreaking and somewhat comforting to know that there are other fans across the nation that feel what you and I have felt or are currently feeling. My experience after all of the Lions’ losing seasons (and just ask Matt effing Millen…. there have been a LOT of them) is never try to get too high or low after one win or one loss or one injury.
Last year, when Matt Stafford went down, so many fans went into “season’s over” mode. By the end of the year, it was true that the Lions had only mustered 6 wins, but the silver lining was much more apparent…. even without Stafford, we were a pretty good team and the outlook was better than we had hoped for the future. We are now seeing that our optimism for this season could be validated and it has re-energized the fanbase. Hopefully, we continue that trend against the Chiefs next week.
I say this only to make an attempt at consolation because trust me…. we Lions’ fans have absolutely been there. We have been to the depths of utter football despair. Things are nowhere near that for the 2011 Chiefs. Your 10 wins last year are no mirage. I hope desperately that our Lions will not in any way, shape or form look past this game (which I don’t think they will because they, like the coaching staff knows we haven’t earned ANYTHING yet). While I know that your quarterback looked poor and your coaching staff has drawn the ire of the fanbase, you have an abundance of talent on that team. From a fast, talented running back to some good young defensive lineman, the Chiefs are a threat to win games each week.
Keep your chin up, Chiefs fans. From the outside perspective, your young team is far from washed up after one game and I, for one, expect a tough, well-fought game on Sunday! (with the Lion’s winning, of course…. lol)

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
This is great! Thanks! Rec'd for sure.
It puts a smile on my face to know that fans from other NFL teams realize that one game does not end a teams season. With the way small market teams are often portrayed in the national media I wonder how much, if any respect those teams have across the US, especially in larger markets. Not that Detroit is the biggest of markets, it still trumps us, and I am so glad to hear that not everyone is counting out the Chiefs after just 1 game. Us Chiefs fans appreciate the respect. I think Detroit is up and coming and I hope them all the best. Lion’s fans have impressed me this year. Seems like the teams who have been at the bottom are a bit more humble when they start to improve and reach the top. They know how quickly you can stumble back down. Thanks for the read, and the reply. Good luck Sunday. Here is to a competitive game!

Until the part about “reach the top.” What’s that feel like?

yeah....
I guess that is not the literal top, that is only one team a year. I guess I should have simply said, crawled out of the cellar.

Yes, thanks for the fellow sympathy, Drew.
I feel the pain of the … cool fans anyway … must feel if you’re a fan of the Lions, Browns and even the Jets. Ehh, the Jaguars and Texans fans haven’t suffered long enough yet to complain. :+)
