Todd Haley - Just the facts (with a little opinion thrown in)

Head coaches all have down years in their careers.  Several head coaches have said that its the only job that you will accept knowing you will be fired some day.  Even Bill Parcells was last in his division after the Giants SB win in 1986.  To expect a winning record every year is being a fan.  To realize that it is impossible to win every year is being a realist.  To lose an opening day home game to the Bills by 34 points because your team wasn't prepared, that's being Todd Haley.

Todd Haley failed us fans yesterday.  It hurts when your expectations are not met.  It really hurts when they are throttled the way the Haley-led Chiefs played against the Bills.  It is real easy for us fans to scream "FIRE HALEY!!!"  when things don't go our way.  I don't recall hearing those chants last year.  Don't get me wrong, this is not a post about how much we should love and adore him.  I'm not even sure I think we should retain his services beyond this season.  There is one thing I do know, he will continue to lead the Chiefs for the rest of the season.  There isn't one head coach that wants to take on a sinking ship in the middle of the season. (At least not one worth having)

To be mad and upset is justifiable with the way our team played yesterday.  To point fingers at Pioli and Haley is also justifiable.  Haley and Pioli have not had the smoothest of roads in taking over our KC Chiefs.  They took a broken team from a head coach that has done nothing but break teams (and somehow the people at ESPN respect his opinion) and a GM who had his up and down years and just happened to finish down.

Now the Facts:

Haley and Pioli took over the team in 2009 with a record of 2-14 the previous season and doubled the win count to 4-12 their first season together

In 2010, lighting struck and the Chiefs when 10-6 to win their division only to lose in the playoffs to Baltimore 30-7.

In 2011, the Chiefs go 0-4 in the preseason and lose their home opener by 34 points (second worse loss in team history)

Other interesting facts:

2009 - Haley fires O-coordinator Chan Gailey before the start of the season to call the plays himself

2010 - Pioli brings in long time associates and SB winning coordinators to relieve Haley of some of his duties so he can focus on being the head coach. O-coordinator leaves for Florida right before the playoffs leaving the play calling to the head coach.

2011 - Haley promotes line coach to O-coordinator, making it a mystery as to who is calling the plays in KC (while throwing in a former Head Coach and O-coordinator to relay plays from the booth to the QB)

Does anyone see a trend?  Could the offensive brilliance Haley showed in Ar

izona been a fluke?  Every time Haley has had his hand in calling plays in KC, the Chiefs have a losing record.

Now for a little bit of opinion:

I think that Todd Haley is a fraud as a head coach.  He hasn't done anything without accomplished coordinators by his side.  He attempts to emulate Parcells by ruling with fear without much success.  This season will expose that.  (Unfortunately for us fans)  I would love to see the Chiefs turn it around after such a tough loss, I just don't know that Haley has it in him to right the ship. Give me your thoughts on the current state of affairs in regards to Todd Haley.
