Predict The Kansas City Chiefs Roster Shockers

From the FanPosts -Joel

I'm taking a page out of Dawgs by Nature to do some predictions on the Kansas City Chiefs roster cuts. This is how it works. We will predict one player that will be a shocking roster addition and one that will be a shocking cut.

Here are the rules that Dawgs by Nature is using:

  • Do not predict the entire 53-man roster.
  • Pick one player who you think might be a "surprise" roster addition. The addition does not have to be a new player.
  • Pick one player who you think might be a "surprise" roster cut.
  • Your picks need not be over-the-top; just pick players that you think would at least warrant some buzz, such as, "oh, I thought they were/weren't a roster lock." In other words, don't say "I'm cutting Jamaal Charles" or "I'm keeping Tamba Hali."  ***

Here are my guesses...

TE Cody Slate will make the roster. The young tight end has shown up in the preseason and could take the spot of O'Connell.

WR Terrance Copper is my surprise cut. He doesn't hold much value as a WR and his ST play can be replaced.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

surprise cut: I think at least ONE of these three gets the axe: McGraw, Copper, Demorrio Williams the “old guard” of the ST group can move on with Cory Greenwood, Tucker, Studebaker, O’Connell and others taking over

surprise make: Micah Johnson He’s been a little quiet in preseason, after a strong first game vs TB, but I think he has what it takes to backup the SILB spot. They have been working Cole there, but I am not sold on him at all.

others

I could see these guys making it: Lawrence (beating Daniels), Gales (extra DL), Bannon (beating Cox haha), Toribio (beating Gales), Horne (beating Tucker)

by stagdsp on Sep 1, 2011 3:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd love

DW replaced by Greenwood or a veteran off the street, and Palko replaced by Stanzi or a vet

by stagdsp on Sep 1, 2011 3:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think Lawrence is beating Daniels based on CB play...but he is more versatile

Gales didn’t help himself last game and I haven’t noticed anything from Bannon since the first game.

I still like Tucker as a young up-and-comer. But he needs to have a good game tonight.

Agreed

on Micah Johnson. Hes been looking pretty good in preseason and with siler going down, hopefully he can make the team. Hopefully McGraw gets cut as you predict.

Micah Johnson

I like the kid… But I can’t see him making the 53.

it's not too far-fetched

with Siler out, there’s a spot up for grabs

the leader is Justin Cole right now, with Micah as his main competition

but I see Greenwood ahead of both of them.

though, I think he’s backing up the WILB behind DJ and DW

I agree with Slate and Copper

I would also say they keep Bannon and cut Cox. I also think Copper is going to be cut and they may keep Colbert.

Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.

by Fozzyboyd on Sep 1, 2011 4:03 PM CDT reply actions

i'm gonna go with...

Colbert for the ‘make’ (veteran move, gels with cassel, WR depth)

and I’ll go with Copper as well for the cut. I never thought i’d say that going into the offseason but i really do think that they want all of the WRs on the roster to be able to at least be semi-productive at WR and I just don’t have faith in Copper to be able to do that. It was a void on the other side of bowe last year when he was in. Great special teams player, but i think we have others we’d like to try in his role on S/T

by Sudden on Sep 1, 2011 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions

More talented, yes, even slightly debatable due to Studie’s longer “rap” sheet. But Studie has some good qualities, and played behind one M. Vrable last year…so, as a coach….

You have to go with the experience, at least to start with…now way Sheff, and even less likely Houston, gets starts ahead of him….really no way, barring injury. This seems more of a coaches actual decisions than going with just talent….plus there are scenarios where each have their own “strengths” so to speak.

I think Demorrio could actually fill in at the role until one of those guys comes along.

They did use Demorrio as an edge rusher in some packages last year, and he did decently well in that role.

Palko pisses me off. We either get Brodie who throws too hard when he needs

more touch, or Palko who always throws with less mustard than needed givine opposing LB’s too much time to close on the play. Stanzi seems to know when to add the mustard and when to use some touch.

I like Stanzi’s instincts much better.

But then, everbody already knows I’m the Stanzi manzi.

Yup. That's why I call it a surprise.

Looking at our roster, he is the one player that is situational here, but might be able to start on a 4-3 defense. If Pioli was looking for a talented player with trade potential that we don’t absolutely NEED, then Gilberry is that guy.

I just look at this guy and think “You’re playing a Jared Allen type of guy at 3-4 DE… and he’s still getting sacks. WTF?”

I don’t want to see him go, but that would surprise most of the fanbase I think. His sack numbers and other stats would make it a fairly easy sell too. It makes a lot of sense, especially if it netted us a 3rd round pick. Probably would be a conditional 3rd to 5th, based on playing time or starts.

we are so thin at OT I would have to think we knew a better option was going to be cut from another team. Battle would also be a shocker make because of his ball handling (or lack thereof) and because of McClain and Dex.

Don’t agree on Gilberry. Would have last year. He has bulked up to a more traditional 3-4 DE size and is a great option for speed in sub-packages. Him and Bailey, Sheffield, Houston, and Hali on 3rd downs with Arenas as a blitz option. JEE-SUZ!

As a self-described "Gentleman of the Suburbs," the Gentry enjoys wearing tight fitting waistcoats, checking his pocketwatch frequently, and reading AP over a cup of tea. No homo.

Roster surprises

Cuts: Urban and Harris

Makes: Butch Lewis and Brandon Blair.

I would have said DW, but with Siler on IR we will keep him unless we get another ILB after cuts.

Well

I am a Broncos fan, but I’d rather compete with the Chiefs for the division title than the Faiders and Dolts. At least KC fans go to games like Broncos fans do, no matter what! (yes that was a potshot at Chargers fans who don’t go to the Q when the Chargers begin the season under .500 annually)

by The Bradfather Strikes Back on Sep 1, 2011 4:44 PM CDT reply actions

It's going to be a few years

before you guys are competing for a division title, and I f@#*in hate the Broncos.

Chiefs are on the up and up

by Chiefs1 on Sep 1, 2011 5:52 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

take all the shots you want, they earned that. I will say though, the Q is awful. I honestly may skip the game this year, and I plan to go to a few out of town kc games

thats pretty pathetic.

and its all due to the environment(crowd is awful, it gets REALLY ugly, a bit like san fran or oakland, people want to fight me for wearing a d.johnson jersey, sigh)

Surprise make: Keary Colbert (rooting hard for him)

Surprise Cut(s): Kalabaloo, Cox

Want to say Pope but Haley has raved about him too much for what he brings to the team on and off the field. If he were going to go I just think the conversation would have happened sooner so he could catch on earlier with another team.

Matt Cassel

Thats who I’d cut because Stanzi has out played him.

by OJ In Nevada on Sep 1, 2011 4:56 PM CDT reply actions

Never Cassel

They’ll let him sell programs in front of the stadium before they’ll cut him

But he's a fringe veteran with big bucks

might have to redefine "fringe" then

because some estimates would put him there. and as for the label of genuine starter and the Chiefs organization, they don’t really go hand in hand. guys can be seen as “starters” and be pulled on the second play of the game…

obviously this isn’t the case often (or 99% of the time) for the QB position.

I would say the terms need a redefinition for me to understand if you believe what you are saying

Just trying to work with what I’ve got…

I have no idea who a suprise make is

Because I’ve only spent $1000 per year to watch the NFL and the $9B NFL industry needs another $5 for me to watch a meaningless preseason game, so I haven’t watched any football. But a suprise cut for me will be Demorrio. Just don’t see how he fits, or is needed.

Suprise make, how about Brian Waters brought back? Especially if Lilja is hurt bad.

well if it costs you $5

you could give it some monetary meaning. $5 doesn’t get you much, but it sure taint meaningless, is it?

Surprise Make: Darryl Harris

Suprise Cut: Tough to figure what the bigger surprise is; Battle because he has proven to be a coaches pet, Cox getting beaten out by Bannon, Gabe Miller (who really likes to cut a 5th round draft choice), or Keary Colbert because of all of the positive press he’s been getting during camp. They will all get cut so take your pick of which you are most surprised by.

I thought Terrance Copper

Was our best special teams player. As much as I like Jackie Battle his time may be coming with Dex and McClain in the picture

by Supersexy on Sep 1, 2011 6:00 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Surprise Cut: Chan Gailey

Okay but seriously, surprise cut Leonard Pope

Surprise make: Jackie Battle
I’m not buying that a few fumbles are going to cost Battle his job. He’s young, he’s cheap and he can play special teams.

by meb6216 on Sep 1, 2011 6:11 PM CDT reply actions

its not the fumbles to be honest. its the numbers crunch

KC lacks any udfa’s etc at HB, expect a Practice squad HB to be signed after the 53 is announced

I expect battle cut for a simple reason. Charles, Jones, Mccluster, Bannon Cox Mcclain are ALL ahead on battle on a priority list, they will keep 2 FB’s, one will play the ST spot occupied by battle

Big Surprises

Surprise Cut: Casey Weigmann

Surprise Keep: Quinten Lawrence

by Aesthetist on Sep 1, 2011 6:20 PM CDT reply actions

Like the idea...

Don’t have enough depth to support it on the O-line. Lilja is out and our right side (read yellow flag Richerdson) is just too inconsistent.

Lilja to IR / Weigmann to waivers

Gurode to Chiefs?

Lilja is missing a lot like Urban last year.

Don’t think the line depth can handle it though.

Battle a Bronco

I’m predicting Battle is cut by the Chiefs and picked up by the Broncos.

by Denver Chief on Sep 1, 2011 9:55 PM CDT reply actions

Surprise cut: Thomas Jones

Huh, What?!?
Jones hasn’t looked particularly good this year, we picked up McClain who is looking for carries and has shown good hands. There is a legitimate chance of either one getting the ball if McClain and Charles are in the backfield at the same time. Power lineup Cox and McClain. Seriously, he’s looked better than Jones.

Surprise Keep: TE Cody Slate, I’m impressed by his upside. I think he has outplayed O’Connell and keeping 3 TE won’t surprise anyone.

by Chewyadg on Sep 2, 2011 1:53 AM CDT reply actions

SUHPRIZE

Surprise Cut: Quinten Lawrence

I consider this a surprise only because the coaching staff seems dedicated to maintaining this guy’s employment. I’m hoping, however, that Pioli will have the guts to pull the trigger on this one.

Surprise Sign: Chester Taylor

The new Jackie Battle. I’m sure the Bears would gladly trade him for a ham sandwich.
