Fans take on the opposition

Well AP, one of the trending hot topics in the media today (that is getting pretty old) has to do with the Donkeys. Not quit Chiefs related, but it is funny to watch all this unfold and get a good laugh in. Stick with me and give me your take on all this after the jump.

Star-divide

Apparently before the lockout and this mini offseason we've had, Tebow was set to be the starter for the Broncos. They were trying to trade Kyle Orton and were going to start Tebow, with Brady Quinn backing him up. Our good friend John Elway couldn't find what he was looking for in return for Orton and never got a deal done, although supposedly the Dolphins were somewhat "close" to acquiring him. So, now they're back with Orton as their starter and earlier reports today had Tebow as the backup, but was fighting for that position as well.

I remember Tebow from his sophomore year at Florida when he was the backup to Chris Leak. To be honest, throughout the course of his remaining years at Florida he was a stud. I remember saying "I'm so sick of hearing about Tim Tebow every time I turn on the TV.' I couldn't take it anymore, Tebow this, Tebow that, yada yada yada. But now, for some reason, I actually like the guy. I like his character, make up and work ethic. I'm even reading his book right now.

I hated hearing about him in college, especially when he won the Heisman (because i wanted Chase Daniel to win it). But IMHO, I think the kid has the drive and talent to become a competent starter in the NFL, with an outside shot at becoming a star. I think the Broncos are only ruining the kid, but that's why the Broncos haven't had an elite QB since the #7 playing.

I'm sure you guys knew all this, but since it's such a hot topic at the moment, I'd like to get your take on it. This is my first fanpost so let me have it!

Chase Daniel(s) had a better chance to win the heisman

than Tebow has to succeed this season.

I’m with you, it’s hard not to like the guy sometimes.

I was once fired from a job two days after I waited on Matt Cassel and his wife Lauren Killian. Totally my AP moment to remember. Unfortunately also one of my stupidest moments.

Ha ha yeah his chances of succeeding this season are pretty slim.

Especially with the team they have. Not that they’re the worst team that will take the field this season, they just have a lot of improvements that need to be made.
And yeah I think Daniel was a longshot to win it, but thats what being a fan is all about, the what ifs. I think with the right team and coaches, Tebow could thrive. And it could be Denver, but it looks like we won’t know for awhile.

Chase had a great chance to win it ... til the debacle vs OKLA (or OKLA ST... whatever, right)

if Tigers had won the Big 12 conference game and remain 1st in the polls, Daniel has a very good chance to win it … ah well, was a helluva fun run to glory that year

Damned if you do, damned if you don't

The fans in Denver want Tebow, come hell or high water (no pun intended). If you put Tebow number 2, the fans will be calling for him everytime Orton throws a pick. Orton is the best chance they have to win, but Tebow is the one the fans want. Tebow will have to get on the field eventually, even if it ruins the team.

What remains to be seen is if the fans in Denver will recognize if and when Tebow proves he can’t be a starting NFL calibur QB or if they will blindly follow him into the darkness of irrelevence for a decade to come.

That thought has crossed my mind.

He’s more Peyton Hillis with an arm than he is any QB of note with legs.

That said, I believe Hillis would have a quicker and more accurate throwing motion.

The BEST thing the Donkeys could do...

…would be having T-bow carry a clip-board for at LEAST his first 3 years. Sure there have been a few QB’s over the last few seasons that started for their teams as rookies (and did a good job) but the “ideal” method for grooming a QB is to make him the 2nd string guy for the first few years with a ‘quality’ starter to learn from.

Aaron Rodgers would be a prime example, but he is not the only one. Even an ‘all-time’ great like Manning who started as a rookie struggled. The Donks have a ‘quality’ starter in Orton…let T-bow ride pine this season (and next) THEN give a real shoot at the starting gig.

All that said I HOPE the Donks trade T-bow to a team where he will have a good chance to succeed in the NFL. Can’t stand the team he plays for, but I do like T-bow (the person) and would love to be able to root for him (on a non-AFC West team) without a guilty conscious.

by DivineGrace on Aug 9, 2011 11:46 PM CDT reply actions

My thoughts exactly.

I can actually seeing him do well in New England as an heir apparent to Brady or even to Peyton in Indianapolis, although in both cases he would have to sit there for a few seasons as well. One team he could start for today and do well on, IMO, is the Vikings. He cant be much worse than I expect McNabb to be. All those teams have the tools to win, which is what Tebow would need to lean on while he’s learning the ropes of the NFL.

If he sucked it up in Denver just long enough for them to cut him first? That way denver isn’t really compensated for losing him.

But I voted start Brady Quinn because I hate the Broncos and if I was in charge of them (for whatever reason) that’s exactly what I would do. I’d also cut Orton just because Elway f**k’d it up with trading him to someone who wanted him, now he’s stuck. I feel sorry for Orton.

For me

I would love for Tebow to start, but if the staff feel Tebow isn’t ready then starting Orton would be in their best interest. Orton’s on a one year contract and likely not resigning, so if Tebow’s not ready, let Orton start and then give Tebow the reigns after a full OTA/minicamp with the 1st team

The problem with the Orton trade had nothing to do with Elway

According to Klis of the Denver Post, Miami couldn’t give Orton a contract that he’d accept, so the two teams never even got to the negotiations. But, since this was posted on MHR to ask for some opinions of Broncos fans, I’ll throw in my two cents. Orton is only on our team because he’ll get $9 million this year and become a free agent next year. Miami couldn’t beat that deal or offer him a longterm contract. So, while he does give us the best chance at winning the most games THIS season, it’s highly unlikely that he’ll want to be here next year (or that we would do what it would take to keep him around anyway). Also, just because we’re likely to win more games with him doesn’t mean we’ll make the playoffs by any means. As much as I’d like to put the blinders on and say we’re just a few pieces away from success, I’m afraid we have a long climb out of the basement. So, since this appears to be a building year anyway, I’d prefer to start Tebow just to see what we have in him. If he fails, I’d love to see us try Quinn in there to see if he’s gotten over his issues. If they both fail, then we know that we’re going to have to keep looking for our future quarterback. If one of them succeeds, maybe we already have our man.

Here's my take...

Sit Tebow. Let Orton start. Orton starting and performing well (behind a line who is recovered from injuries, a better blocking scheme for the run game, and good receivers) will only drive Orton’s value higher. The trade deadline isn’t for a couple months.

IF we can trade Orton this year sometime, so be it. Orton is worth nothing to my beloved “donkeys” next year as he is a Unrestricted Free Agent. Start Tebow at that point.
OR after the trade deadline expires, start Tebow then. We are not going to the super bowl this year, I believe the extra reps and game time the 2nd half of the season will be invaluable to young Tim.

I also believe trading Orton sometime this season will be worth a lot to us next year. A extra draft pick would help bring fresh talent to our guys and help us that much more rebuild than to have a QB who is no longer with us next year.

As stated before, Denver is not winning the Super Bowl this year, might as well plan for the future!

by Broncs55 on Aug 10, 2011 9:18 AM CDT reply actions

that's about the 2nd best scenario left for you guys

First, I think Orton is the best QB you have. But, to minimize previous mistakes, you need to just get rid of him. I think your best value for Orton is trading him as soon as possible before season. Maybe after someone gets hurt or shows shit in preseason games. Because of the contract situation, the longer you have him the less value he has for you – I think.

As to Tebow, your first mistake was chasing up to get him in the first place. But, that’s that. So, to me, since your season is probably lost anyway you should just be starting the guy now to see what the heck he can do. Perhaps he becomes the 2nd coming of Elway, who knows. I personally don’t think so because this style QB rarely is good in NFL. But, you guys have a hell of a lot of draft pick and money value tied up in the guy. You really have to play him.

I'd take Orton as a back up, but if we drafted Tebow i would've been pissed.

T.Tebow is a Bronco because McDummy had to do something to try and save his job. The Broncos had many needs at that time and QB would’ve been towards the bottom on my list. McDummy used 3 picks to reach on Tebow in the 1st round and those 3 picks could’ve been used on 3 players in positions of need, in a draft that was very deep in talent.

But i won’t sit hear and say the Bronco are going to waste talent, because at least they realized it was time to rebuild and have started doing it with a very good draft. The Chiefs on the other hand have wasted talent, how long did it take them to realize it was time to start over…………………..too fricken long.

Tebow and Vick

There was a great article posted on bleacher report: HERE

It talks about how much good sitting on the bench behind McNabb/Kolb and getting coached by Reid did for Vick’s passing game – which has made his scrambling/running ability truly scary. Tebow could achieve similar success if he’s given the time to sit, learn, and develop his passing ability without being thrown into the fire and leaning on his current skillset to win games. If Tebow starts now, he’s not going to develop into a passer very quickly (or maybe at all). If he get more time to sit and learn, practice and develop… he could be one of the greatest QBs to ever play the game. Imagine if Vick got to develop like Aaron Rodgers, and had the leadership qualities and intangibles that Tim has? Vick would be a sure lock HOF’er and in the running for best NFL QB of all time.

As a BRONCO fan, I say sit Tebow until he’s completely ready. If we start him now we’re just going to cripple him.

Just a sidenote.

The average Bronco fan doesn’t agree with this, and they just want to see Tebow now. Because they’re QB spoiled, impatient, and really have no idea what’s best for Tebow and this Franchise in the long term. They’re calling for Orton’s head, when Orton being on the roster is probably going to go down in history as being one of the most fortunate events of Tebow’s career. I bet if any fan asked John Elway if he’d have liked to have the benefit of a Farve or Orton leading the team his first /second year that he could sit and learn from he’d have taken it. But that’s just me.

I think Orton is better for the stability of your program right now, and he’s proven to be a good quarterback. I mean, if Tebow CLEARLY outplays him for the remainder of training camp, perhaps. But, according to the reports I’ve read, Tebow isn’t even outplaying Quinn.

I agree. Let em take a back seat now and learn from a true professional.

Fellow Bronco fan

How many years would DeBerg have beaten out Elway if the same principle was applied? I’m guessing 2 or 3 years. I think they need to see what they have. it’s like everyone has forgotten how much of a quitter Orton was last year and how Tebow came in and revitalized them. Give him the improved defense we will have this year and see what he can do. Instead we will go 9-7 with Orton and mortgage the future to move up after Luck or someone else next year, then watch Tebow succeed somewhere else.

by Broncokev on Aug 10, 2011 9:43 PM CDT up reply actions

This is an interesting debate

I think I used to fall into the “mentorship camp” where the accumulated knowledge was to train up a guy for 3 years or so. Of course, the other camp was to throw the new savior QB right into games and let him learn on the job. I think both strategies can work but which one to use really depends on that new young QB and his characteristics. So, the trick is to figure out the mental strength of that new guy. As much as I hate to say it, Tebow probably has the mental strength to deal with being the starter now. I just don’t know how well his “technical” physical talents will catch up.

Imagine if Vick got to develop like Aaron Rodgers, and had the leadership qualities and intangibles that Tim has? Vick would be a sure lock HOF’er and in the running for best NFL QB of all time.

That is some laughably heinous speculation right there…

You do remember that Atlanta Falcons Vick had the work ethic of a turnip, right? I doubt it would have done him a lick of good had he sat behind a talented veteran for 3 years. He didn’t seem to want to pay any attention to things like formations and progressions until he went to the clink and then realized his NFL career was over if he didn’t start doing things that actual QB’s have to do…like watch film, and study playbooks.

Tebow let all the hype get to his head

I think when Denver declared him the starter prematurely he got way too comfortable while Quinn and Orton worked their asses off. Now it’s showing… Do I think Tebow will ever be a solid starting QB? No, he makes Byron Leftwich look like he’s Tony Romo. But, Tebow is driven enough that within a few years he can have a season similar to a solid rookie prospect and grow from there

I want Orton to start and Tebow to play in the redzone. Maximize Orton's between the 20's ability and Tebow's nose for the endzone.

Whatever gives us the best chance to beat KC twice a year. :)

sounds like you should just change him into a fullback

like everyone said he should be.

I think Tebow is a good guy

and if he weren’t a Bronco I would be rooting for him. However, I am sick to death of hearing about him. All the talk and hype surrounding him is actually making me dislike him lol. Not his fault I know, but I’m just sick of it.

Calmer heads will prevail

I think John Fox has both feet squarely on the ground. So do Brian Xander and John Elway. They’re not going to be rushed into anything foolish. They’re going to do what they think is best for the Broncos both now and long term. They know Tebow isn’t quite ready. They’re not going to trade Orton anytime soon. They may even try to work out a long term deal with him.

On the other hand, Orton may not want to come back next year. Who can blame him with all that pressure sitting on the bench behind him. But either way it behooves Orton to have the best year he possibly can, either to establish himself as the long term solution at Denver or set himself up to do the same somewhere else. If the Broncos really do improve, you’ve got to think both QB’s are going to be worth more a year or two from now.

If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

Broncos are simply not going to extend Orton this year

And, if they don’t do that, he’ll be leaving as a FA.

That could be.

But if Orton has a good year, he may be offered an extension.

What he really wants (and deserves, I think) is security in the form of a long term deal with some guaranteed money. If he gets that and the K is reasonable, he is valuable as a QB and a trade possibility.

Prediction for 2011

Doctors will discover that Tebows blue balls were effecting his ability to throw a accurate pass.
R.Clady will hold T.Hali at least 10 times and not get called for it.
McClain will truck V.Miller at least once this year.

Tebow doesn't have any blue balls

I believe all that BS is a fabricated story to make him seem like some holier than thou guy for the press.
