6 players 30+ years old

On defense, Kelly Gregg, Jon McGraw, and Demorrio Williams. On offense, Casey Wiegmann, Thomas Jones, and Jerheme Urban. Wiegmann and Gregg are in all likelihood in their last season. Interior line and nosetackle likely become draft priorities in '12 regardless of how Hudson and Powe pan out. At some point, the Chiefs have to cut the cord with McGraw and Williams. If Siler hadn't been injured, I would have thought this would have been the season we saw Williams waived. If Washington and Langford aren't ready to replace McGraw, it's time to think about drafting a mid-round safety. Urban is keeping his spot warm until Baldwin asserts himself. Jones will likely be replaced by a upper mid-round choice in '12.

He's 35. He's been slowing down for several years

He had a career high 80 tackles in 2007, was out in 2008, then saw his tackle production decline to 63 in 2009, and then last year it was 38. He also averaged about 3 sacks per season, until last year when he recorded none. These numbers are more than Edwards put up, but it’s clear he’s been declining from his peak in 2007. Last season, Pat Williams was the oldest defensive player in the NFL, at 38 years. Gregg turns 35 this year.

Context.

BAL began rotating in Cody at NT last year, splitting snaps with Gregg. They needed to develop him since he’s their young draft pick and guy of the future.

More rotational snaps for the rookie means fewer snaps for the vet. So of course he won’t have as many tackles. But his impact while in-game is still solid.

Stats are not a linear tell-all of production.

The Chiefs and I have mutually agreed on this decision and although I look forward to continuing my career, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Kansas City.

The Ravens drafted Cody for a reason

because Gregg is getting old and slowing down.

Well no player is infinite

They wanted to have their draft pick trained up and ready to go by / before the time Gregg ran out of gas.

Cody developed quickly and is ready to start, so Gregg goes elsewhere when his contract is up.

If you just have it in your head that he’s washed up and useless for some reason, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised once the season rolls around.

I never said Gregg was washed up

But it’s pretty clear that he’s on the downside of his career and has very little left in the tank

I would agree with TRS

Gregg might start this year and backup next year.

our Base 3-4 is less than half our snaps on Defense and we pull the NT for passing downs

I can see Gregg lasting longer if Powe continues to develop.

Why run a guy into the ground if you can get solid rotation with Powe and Torbino

by DizzyKC on Aug 25, 2011 3:28 PM CDT up reply actions

The stats he put up as a NT are uncommon

I watched him during the preseason, the guy was still doin his thing. He was being rotated out a lot because one of BMores stong suits is their depth on the d-line. They keep rotating fresh guys means they stay dominant instead of wearing down as the game goes on

Definitely agree

I’d say Gregg has at least two quality seasons in him.

Maybe more just out of sheer grit, determination and stubborn-bastard-ness. Which is what you want in a NT.
