I attended the Kansas City Chiefs Aug. 24 open practice at Arrowhead. Two weeks ago, I saw a Wednesday night practice in St. Joe.
Wow. The difference was amazing.
First, this Chiefs team looks fast. Real fast. Not just on defense, but the running backs. Dexter McCluster and Jamaal Charles coming out of the backfield is a nightmare for defenses. The Chiefs must find a way to get those guys on the field together and in open space.
My observations:
1) TE Tony Moeaki caught every catchable ball thrown to him. If he stays healthy, he is the next Dallas Clark.
2) QB Ricky Stanzi was off target on multiple throws.
3) S Jon McGraw had a nice interception from a Cassel pass.
4) Jon Baldwin and Scott Pioli talked on the sidelines for at least 10 minutes. They were both smiling throughout. What's there to smile about?
5) The Chiefs offense had four tries to score a touchdown from the 10 yard line. On first down, Cassel throws a dart to Dwayne Bowe on a sideline play. Ball spotted at the one yard line. Second and third down, they fail to get in. Fourth down, nadda. I have to believe in a real game, Haley gives it to LeRon McClain. That's why he was brought in.
Thank you to the Chiefs for opening Arrowhead for the night. Free.
