Third Shift Open Thread
We are back this evening with another installment of the Third Shift Open Thread.
Tonight conversation starter is: There were many factors that contributed to the 2010 Kansas City Chiefs winning the AFC West. What was the most influential factor that helped them win the division? Take a moment and think about it.
Answer that and keep the open thread going in the comments....

Assuming the reports are true,
the answer I would have to go with is the Redskins balking at the Chiefs’ trade counteroffer for Charles.

Chris
I counter your question with another. Did we win it as much as SD lost it? I say it all began with Week 1’s win. That was THE point everyone believed we could be good.
Great question and response
With the way people are predicting SD to win the West and the Chiefs to take a step back, I’d imagine most folks outside of KC think SD lost it, KC didn’t win it.

If you're saying the Week 1 win was the biggest factor
I have to disagree. That may have started off the season on a high note but did it really propel KC to the playoffs?

Schedule has to be up there
Ended up being near the bottom of the league.
Hardly any injuries, no serious injuries. Outside of Leggett and Sheffield, there weren’t any early injuries.
Jamaal Charles being awesome didn’t hurt either.
Gotta put Dwayne Bowe in the discussion too. Maybe not most important, but close to it.

We were at the bottom, sure, but we're only talking about the AFC West, so we have to look at two things:
Uncommon Opponents: Remember, these are the only two games that are determined based on the prior season’s results.
The Broncos really suffered the most, drawing the Jets and Ravens – Two strong AFC teams that played deep into the playoffs. They lost both of those games
The Raiders drew the Dolphins and Steelers – The Steelers were strong, the Phins were middling, they also lost both games.
The Chargers drew New England and Cincy – A powerhouse and a cream-puff, they also lost both games.
The Chiefs drew the Bills and Browns – we won both of those games, and not by much.
So the Chargers couldn’t take care of business vs. one of the worst teams in the NFL last year, and they got HOUSED in that game. Can’t blame them for losing to New England. But if they take care of the Bengals they’re 1 win closer to us.
Common Opponents: The NFC West is usually a scapegoat for our schedule strength, check out how the rest of the West vs West played out.
Broncos
1-3 vs the NFC West (whoop!)
2-2 vs. the AFC South
Raiders
2-2 vs the NFC West
0-4 vs the AFC South (whoop!)
Chargers
2-2 vs the NFC West
4-0 vs the AFC South (that’s some nice shootin’ Lou)
Chiefs
4-0 vs the NFC West (w00t!)
2-2 vs the AFC South
So vs. common opponents the Chiefs were tied with the Chargers at 6-2. The Broncos were 3-5, struggling with the NFC West. The Raiders were 2-6, getting swept by the AFC South.
Now the Chargers couldn’t pull a winning record against the consensus worst division in the NFL last year. If they won just one of those games, combined with a win over the Blingals, they would have knocked KC out of the playoffs. Also, their loss to KC to open was a key component in the final standings. They win that game and we’re also out.
I’ve been picking on the Chargers a lot and must note that the Raiders weren’t out of the picture until late either. They just couldn’t do anything outside of the division – pulling a lowly 2-6 record – if they could have pulled two W’s from amongst Arizona, San Fran, Miami, or Tennessee (all teams with losing records), they would have supplanted KC in the playoffs.
If this were a question about what factors contributed to the Chiefs making the playoffs, we could question schedule. As for winning the AFC West, schedule as an argument barely holds water.
Hard to argue with the rookie class contribution – Berry the most, but Lewis, Moeaki & McCluster when healthy, Arenas, and who knows what Shef may have done for us.

Health
While there were many factors, it seems the teams relative ability to stay healthy probably was the biggest. The depth wasn’t too impressive last season.

A couple of things.
The Chiefs being healthy.
The Chargers Special Teams being so damn horribly awful.

Most influential factor in winning last year's division
was the Charger’s Special Teams.
The turning point of the Chiefs was Herm blowing up the roster and going young…that led them to trade Allen and draft Dorsey, Albert, Charles, Flowers, Carr.

Verlander is clearly the Most Valuable Player… Well Bautista is also REALLY good, but I just want the best hitter award getting the MVP, and the best pitcher getting the Cy Young.
Its not really rational, but thats what i want… But Im not so set on it that I would really care… If I had my way, I’d just give the award to the player with the most WAR and call it good.

I would have to say
how they were able to bounce back from losses. In years past things would continue to spiral out of control, but we played tough against some good teams and lost (Colts, Texans) and were able to bounce back after butt kickins (Broncos, Chargers).
So yeah the team as a whole being able to bounce back from losses.
We'll see how well we do this year with the
toughest 5 game stretch of any team.

Sure
But the post I replied to was on how well we bounced back after losses. Main reason was because we didn’t really have 2 tough back to back games…that’s 5 just in about 1/3 of the season….It’s Math. I don’t think 10 and 6 gets you in the playoffs this year unless you win the division…..so we at least have to go 2 and 3 against NE, Chi, GB, NYJ, Pitt. So our season will be decided by that 5 game stretch.

Yeah, feel free to scan the recent news articles.
When one of the most successful CEOs ever resigns, it’s kind of big.
I’m not an Apple fan at all, but I have mad respect for what Steve Jobs did there. People who think he won’t be missed, must not have been around the first team he left the company.
Microsoft didn't even skip a beat when Gates stepped down
Im sure Jobs wouldn’t be leaving if he didn’t think his baby was being left with competent hands.

he didn't leave the first time
he got fired by a stupid board
CHIEFS DYNASTY – we’re kind of a big deal
Okay.
But the point remains, he was missed big time. I’m not saying Apple is going to fall from the tree tomorrow, but I think it’s naive to think they won’t miss him. I don’t think MS is a good comparison, because Ballmer was pretty much running things for years anyway, before Gates left. It was a very smooth transition.
Jobs has already been on medical leave since mid January

However, you dismiss Jobs’ capability of building a good company if you think they are going to crumble now. It’s a different time in the life of Apple than when he was gone the first time.

And it might matter in the fairly long term… Say in 2+ years, because I would imagine everything Apple will do for the next 2 or 3 years is already mapped out… From what I understand about their new operating system, is that there isn’t even a computer that can utilize what it can do.

Herm was pretty good with the draft too.
The Chiefs might be stacked if he was allowed to rebuild from year one. He may have not been the guy to coach them, but our roster would be much better now.
That I might agree with. He drafted some very talented players, and then coached to 3 levels below their abilities
It took a new coach joining the team to bring the best out of DJ, Bowe etc…

Why?
Pioli and Haley put the best group of players/coaches together for the game plan that they wanted to run. Even if they weren’t the best money could buy, they fit the plan. Each had his role. They conditioned the players into understanding that if the are in shape and follow thier assignments, any group of 53 players can win.
How is no one saying the 2 most key elements....
a historically great ground game and leading the league in fewest giveaways. The opposite of both of those were painfully apparent in the playoff loss. People need to get off the MNF Chargers win, it was big but didn’t win the division people
Why? The Chiefs don't win the division without it.

Us. The Fans of the KC Chiefs. The Arrowhead Faithful. The Fans that got robbed with a shitty back to back loss in Arrowhead ( raiders then the Ravens ) Us the fans that got shafted with a lockout .. us.. the fans…

I doubt it...
And not because the talent won’t be there, but because if the talent does get that good, the Royals won’t be able to afford to keep it all. The economics of baseball is severely different now than it used to be…
But yeah, I think there is serious potential with this team… 2012 they should be competitive, and perhaps 2013 they could be a force to contend with.

They still have a ton of arms in the minors...
They are going to have to sign at least one pitcher at some point.
But nearly every single Minor league arm had a down year when you look at last year and what their expectations were… But this was to be expected… So you can expect most of them to rebound a little next year.
There are a LOT of arms in the minors. I really like Odorizzi.

What are your football season schedules looking like?
I am remembering fondly when I only had Chiefs games to watch on Sunday. I looked to my future and I see that I will be attending two games on Saturdays, one game on Thursdays, and try to catch the Chiefs game on TV on Sundays and hope it isn’t in conflict with the flag football game. I will also possibly have a game to watch on Fridays as well- not completely sure about this one yet.
Im gonna miss opening weekend.
But after that weekend, its usually just a little BBQ and football in HD

But I have a hard time justifying spending that kind of money… Especially since the experience at home is soooo good… Especially if you get friends over.
I just hate dropping that kind of coin, only to have to drive 3 hours there and back, sit in traffic, spend $10 on a beer (or whatever they are charging these days).
Plus at home I have a DVR and infinite amount of replays.

I would never be able to afford going to every game.
Going to one would be bad enough.
I used to think that I would never want to bother with seeing an NFL game live- what with TV having a better view and all. But I’ve been to so many of my nephews games lately that I think I would know what to watch for and be able to follow along just fine. It would be a great experience to go at least once.
For you or anyone else that may be interested.
Living in Ohio and our daughter starting school this year my wife won’t be able to make many games so if anyone wants to go with me (for free of course) they are more than welcome. I sit low level 40 yard line in the gimp section. My guest sits in a folding (padded) chair and there is tons of room to walk around, stand, etc. I hope to give this seat to someone that might not otherwise be able to go. Not sure which games she can’t make yet but it looks like most of them except maybe around Thanksgiving time. The home opener may be taken by a bud of mine also. Won’t know till next week on that one.
That is awesome of you and I wish I could take you up on the offer.
Unfortunately I can’t make plans to travel much until I get my finances figured out and find out how to wrangle time off from work. My plan is to make it to a Bronco game sometime. My sister will split the cost of travel/lodgings with me and we’ll take my nephew (a Broncos fan).
I think it is great of you to do this. It’d be a lot of fun to attend a game with other fans from here. I am sure there is someone who’d be grateful to take you up on your offer.
How do you make your nachos?
Just want to make sure they’re up to par.

Saaay...Is Your AV name another crack @ Cassel's Accuracy ?...
J/K…Back to the Thread…IMO …Strength & Conditioning was the # 1 Factor in taking the Divisional Crown…
A) It applied to our mindset as well…
2)Our improvement in Team Speed ( Especially on D# ) was related…&
III) We surprised alot of teams w/ both…(Improving 49ers,Jags ,Titans, Browns & Seattle leap to mind)…
Most influential aspect that helped us win the division clearly was our rushing game. Its simple to me, the success we had in the running game is directly attributed to Matt Cassel’s success last year as a passer: with a rushing game obviously the QB has more freedom to attack through playaction and distraction… Also, with the running game working well, it helped our defense stay off the field for more then 3 plays at a time; any good chiefs fan knows our defense just couldnt stay off the field the last few years because of the offenses failures. Its amazing how your whole team looks better when you can run the ball, thank you Charles who still has the potential to be one of the best running backs ever realistically… thank you very much I aced this test

Weak Schedule
Since the realignment in 2001-2002, the 2010 schedule was the weakest the Chiefs had faced at .409 winning pct. The toughest schedules have been 2008 and 2004 .560 winning pct., which so happens both years was against NFC south opponents. I can argue that the NFC South is the toughest division in the NFL.
