Kansas City Chiefs LB Brandon Siler May Be Out For The 2011 Season
Back on July 31st of this year, word leaked out that the Kansas City Chiefs had signed former Chargers LB Brandon Siler. A few days later the news was confirmed and the 25-year old Siler was officially a member of the Kansas City Chiefs roster.
Just over three weeks later, there is bad news for Siler. He reportedly tore his Achilles tendon yesterday in practice and will not play in the 2011 NFL season. Siler's agent, David Canter, tweeted this out yesterday:
Rough day but sending thoughts prayers & love out to client Brandon Siler for a speedy recovery. Gonna miss watching you ball this year.
We're still waiting for official confirmation on this from the Kansas City Chiefs front office. Siler being out for the season would be the first major injury of the Kansas City Chiefs 2011 training camp.
With Siler out, the Kansas City Chiefs still have plenty of linebackers on the roster - 13 actually - but they lose a linebacker with some good experience. This isn't a devastating blow but it's certainly a set back for the linebacking corp and the Kansas City Chiefs' special teams.

I'm hoping Greenwood, Micah Johnson and maybe even Bakhtiari can help with that.

this will give a young guy a chance to step up and earn that spot...should be interesting

I was thinking the same thing
Hopefully one of the other young guys will step up and show something. I can’t say I have really noticed much difference between Belcher and Siler so far this offseason.
Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.
Siler is a young guy.
I was really hoping the Chiefs could develop him into a starter, or at least a valuable backup. That said, there are many players who would be far worse to lose. Knock on Jerome.
yeah just saying maybe a greenwood who wouldnt have made the 53 before, now will...maybe we find a diamond in the rough in micah johnson, who knows

greenwood was a lock before this
he’s on the 53 regardless
Micah was on the bubble, and may get the chance to step in, though
I had high hopes for Micah
Still pulling for him to squeeze in. Or perhaps I need to accept that he’s not the beast I once thought/hoped he was.

I’ll give Haley one thing, he doesn’t get tripped up much during his press conferences. He seems to stick to his guns on all the ‘policies’ about family business and the like.
Gotta respect that. I’m sure his players do.

The reporters try all kinds of tricks to trip him up, but he rarely falls for them.
Yeah he sees those a mile away. He'll crack that tiniest of smiles, and then attempt to revert back to his stone-faced persona.
He knows exactly what’s up.
The one thing I have noticed more of lately than in the past is his mention of individual players in the conf’s. I think that’s just more indicative of where we are as a team than anything else

I say blame the lockout rules of no workouts with team trainers and doctors!
This has happened too many times this year across the League. Letting players continue to train under the supervision of the teams trainers and doctors most likely would have prevented most of these type injuries.
Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!
I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.
Agreed
I work for a sports training company that trains players for NFL combine and we also do NFL off season training. All these injuries, especially the achilles, has me wondering what kind of workouts these guys were doing during the lockout. A lot of guys get hurt when all they do is run and lift run and lift run and lift. No deceleration drills or learning how to stop and go. Plus who knows how much they dedicated to stretching, we do yoga at least 3 times a week.
by SoFloChief on Aug 24, 2011 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions 2 recs
Yeah man, we were always told it was the stretching and the agility drills that prevented these kind of things
Running and hitting the weight room do very little for it.
The Chiefs and I have mutually agreed on this decision and although I look forward to continuing my career, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Kansas City.
Exactly
When all you do is lift to try and get bigger and stronger and then go out and do track type workouts, it doesnt train your ligaments and tendons to adjust to the new weight/load you’ve added to your body. Like you said its the agility drills and lots of deceleration, stop and go, cutting, etc that strengthens your knees, ankles, and feet and allows them to adapt and handle the weight and stress put upon them.
A weak spot
Just got weaker. I would expect Pioli will find a veteran ILB or two after roster cuts.
This is disappointing
But I like Belcher’s upside. He’s entering his 3rd season I think he will get better and better.
He was our sacrificial lamb.

Non issue
He wasn’t going to beat out Belcher anyway. We have enough backup/ST type depth at LB. Next year I am hoping this position gets addressed…draft or FA. Unless Belcher becomes something special, which I just don’t see.
Disagree.
He was a 25 year old, who at the very least looked to provide solid depth, perhaps more than that in the future, and was a very good contributor on special teams. By far not the worst player they could have lost, but not a non issue, either.
ST'ers
we have. I just can’t see me thinking in week 5 “Damn I wish that Siler guy wasn’t hurt”

he brings a lot to the table, and really solidifies the ILB position.
I would like to see a FA acquisition to replace him…
but I’d LOVE it if Micah and Cory take over
it was very early to make that kind of determination
he’s a solid, experienced player that could easily have provided great depth, or maybe challenged for a starting job at some point
yep I was excited to see what type of depth and push he was going to bring
I still expect us to bring someone else in and continue to push who we still have left in house.

Not sure
it’s baseless. We do currently have the most room below the cap in the NFL, right? When was the last time the lowest spending team in the league won the SB? When was the last time in the bottom 10 of spending won the SB? I am asking but I think I can guess the answer. You don’t spend just to spend but talent costs money.
by Carter Walker on Aug 24, 2011 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions
I think
we were rated around 15 of the 32 teams on spending, green bay last year was 14th.
by Bigcherokeechief on Aug 24, 2011 1:54 PM CDT up reply actions
The
waters can muddied by talking about cash spending versus the salary cap etc but the point is the Chiefs have the most money available under the cap and teams in that position do not win SB’s
by Carter Walker on Aug 24, 2011 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions
Cap =/= spending
We’re usually in the middle to top 1/3 in cash spending.
Cap is not the end all be all of financial situations for teams.

See propaganda works

We are spending money
on our own guys. I would rather them re-sign our guys and pick up a few FA’s here and there then go all out, blow all our money, and still be sitting at home just like the Redskins, and Cowboys, and Raiders, and probably like Philly will be doing this year.
Seriously?
Do you not know the difference between cash spending and cap space?
The Chiefs and I have mutually agreed on this decision and although I look forward to continuing my career, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Kansas City.
I think you need to go do some research then
Last year 3/4 of the playoff teams were in the bottom half of spending.
Raiders always near the top.
CHIEFS DYNASTY – we’re kind of a big deal

SB. Why duck the direct point? How many teams win SB’s in the Chiefs salary cap position?
by Carter Walker on Aug 24, 2011 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions
The "cap" doesn't even matter until the end of the league year.
Maybe you should address that question then.
I don’t expect the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl, but that has nothing to do with their cap number.
What?
Try again. Another failure to address my point. Your expectation is irrelevant.

by Carter Walker on Aug 24, 2011 2:17 PM CDT up reply actions
If you're point is that the Chiefs aren't spending enough...
I personally don’t care. They have an extremely young team and are still building to win not just this year, but every year. Like I said, I don’t think they’re legitimate Super Bowl contenders, but I wouldn’t think so if they spent a bunch more money either. They’re building a very solid young core, so they can pay their own guys that deserve it, while reloading through the draft. Too early to say whether it will work, but I’m on board with that approach.
What I mean is they have all year to fill their cap.
And they have several young guys who are due for new contracts.
That was my original point
i doubt those guys get their $$ this year…management has a nasty habit of letting things play out all year and just end up keeping the $
I know. If only we'd managed to keep guys like Hali, DJ and Charles. =(
The Chiefs and I have mutually agreed on this decision and although I look forward to continuing my career, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Kansas City.
not ducking anything
This is not the same list I’d seen before so my earlier statement is not accurate to this one.
However, point remains, you can spend a ton of money and still suck, look at Redskins, Seahawks, Raiders as only a few examples.
Age of your team, ours is very young, also impacts it.
If money is only thing you think matters, you’re clueless and helpless.
CHIEFS DYNASTY – we’re kind of a big deal
Your
earlier post was VERY inaccurate. I didn’t say that spending money guaranteed that you would not suck. I am asking a simple question and the answer is now very obvious….Nobody wins the SB from our salary cap position…I do not believe that is a coincidence. This “we’ll coach up the right 53” thing sometimes seems like an excuse to not go and get talent.

CHIEFS DYNASTY – we’re kind of a big deal
If you say something enough, it must be true.
Never mind that the 2011 cap isn’t even counted until next year.
Not the point
Not talking about this year. Talking about a historical perspective of spending and the fact that it doesn’t appear that anyone can find the team that managed to be in a position at or near the bottom of spending in relation to the cap and win a SB.
by Carter Walker on Aug 24, 2011 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions

by Carter Walker on Aug 24, 2011 2:23 PM CDT up reply actions
my argument is
the chiefs are a couple of key players away from being legit…..it’s a domino effect thing….in the past couple of seasons if the chiefs would have signed an impact player(they had the cap $ to do so)this team this year would be in better shape to compete, but they continue to be well below the cap and it’s always “let’s wait til next year”
Awwww

Whatever. I have plenty of names for you but I’ll keep them to myself. I continue to think you are completely inaccurate on your assessment of what our mgmt is doing. Our mgmt IS spending money and doing it wisely and WILL win the SB sometime soon.
Talk at ya then.
CHIEFS DYNASTY – we’re kind of a big deal
ok, sorry I lost my cool
Here’s the difference as I see it.
1)You keep stating an opinion and the only “justification” that you can come up with is to state the same thing over and over.
2)At least for me, I made a statement and tried to find the evidence I recalled. I did not yet find it but found similar but different evidence and presented it anyway. It did not fully support my argument – but contradicted your assertion. And even so, you simply ignored the evidence and continue to state your unsupported argument.
You continue to state that simply spending a bunch of money will bring a SB and claim that is your point. But, in reality, your point isn’t that at all. Your real point is that the Chiefs aren’t spending any money. Please support the evidence you have to make that point. Further, produce the evidence that a team spending in the bottom half of salary has NEVER won the SB.
CHIEFS DYNASTY – we’re kind of a big deal

I started with Pawelek who is noted by his Baylor fame….then I just went with it.
"Nobody scares us," Dion Gales said. "Where I’m from, it ain’t how big or small a man is, it’s the size of the fight in them.

Kirk Morrison is available?
He was actually quote good with Oakand IIRC

he is a tackle machine
but apparently those tackles came 5 yards past the line of scrimmage. We should sign him jjst to prevent him from going to Oakland
BOOM!
In 6 NFL seasons....Morrison
723 Tackles
5 sacks
7 int
6 ff
20 pass deflections

Belcher does pretty well stuffing the run. That’s it
BOOM!

0 int
1 ff
2 pass deflections
DJ last season
122 tackles

This scared the crap out of me!
On my phone all I could see was “Cheifs lose LB for the Season” and I FLIPPED. Let’s just say that when I seen that it was just Siler, I was happy. Tough break for the guy, he was doing good, but I am happy it wasn’t some other LB.
Ever seen the movie Green Street Hooligans? That's how I feel about my Chiefs.
Lofa Tatupu should be the guy we go for
I know it’s going to take a little money but the guy does produce. Belcher is good, but Tatupu does have a great run at production. He even has some playoff & 1 Super Bowl appearance under his belt. That would allow for at least a 3 man rotation in DJ, Tatupu & Belcher.

Anyone remember Corey Mays?
If he can show us the same stuff he did two seasons ago (and by that I mean two preseasons) then we have nothing to worry about.
*When we blitz, have the LB's do a KC Strip. Do this in remembrance of DT.
*Dear David Glass, as a lifelong Royals fan, I beg you to please sell the team. You have always been the problem; you will never be the solution.

had me worried there for a sec
The Chiefs and I have mutually agreed on this decision and although I look forward to continuing my career, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Kansas City.
I know this is karma for secretly cheering when
Denver players get hurt. You can blame me, guys.

WAIT?
Are we talking about a run this year OR using this as another developmental year? That has been something that has confounded me for a few weeks now. If this is still a developmental year, go with what you have and hope they get better. BUT for those of us who are impatient(me included) go get a couple of more names that you KNOW can do the job. You don’t have to develop a player who already has developed! Just Sayin!
