Kansas City Chiefs LB Brandon Siler May Be Out For The 2011 Season

Back on July 31st of this year, word leaked out that the Kansas City Chiefs had signed former Chargers LB Brandon Siler. A few days later the news was confirmed and the 25-year old Siler was officially a member of the Kansas City Chiefs roster.

Just over three weeks later, there is bad news for Siler. He reportedly tore his Achilles tendon yesterday in practice and will not play in the 2011 NFL season. Siler's agent, David Canter, tweeted this out yesterday:

Rough day but sending thoughts prayers & love out to client Brandon Siler for a speedy recovery. Gonna miss watching you ball this year.

We're still waiting for official confirmation on this from the Kansas City Chiefs front office. Siler being out for the season would be the first major injury of the Kansas City Chiefs 2011 training camp.

With Siler out, the Kansas City Chiefs still have plenty of linebackers on the roster - 13 actually - but they lose a linebacker with some good experience. This isn't a devastating blow but it's certainly a set back for the linebacking corp and the Kansas City Chiefs' special teams.

yah, a lot of chatter about him being in on nickel and dimes …

different injury than Sheff last year, but still very much a deja vu all over again moment

I tore mine a couple of years ago…and yes, OUCH! This is a very serious injury but he’ll be back next year. I was looking fwd to see him play… Wish him a speedy recovery

Lets hope

Some team cuts a good LB for us to pick up.

I'm hoping Greenwood, Micah Johnson and maybe even Bakhtiari can help with that.

The Chiefs and I have mutually agreed on this decision and although I look forward to continuing my career, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Kansas City.

I was thinking the same thing

Hopefully one of the other young guys will step up and show something. I can’t say I have really noticed much difference between Belcher and Siler so far this offseason.

Insert witty yet thought provoking phrase here.

by Fozzyboyd on Aug 24, 2011 1:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Siler is a young guy.

I was really hoping the Chiefs could develop him into a starter, or at least a valuable backup. That said, there are many players who would be far worse to lose. Knock on Jerome.

by Tarkus on Aug 24, 2011 1:16 PM CDT up reply actions

greenwood was a lock before this

he’s on the 53 regardless

Micah was on the bubble, and may get the chance to step in, though

I had high hopes for Micah

Still pulling for him to squeeze in. Or perhaps I need to accept that he’s not the beast I once thought/hoped he was.

Bakhtiari has looked decent

But hasn’t he been playing OLB?

Could be remembering nickel / sub package though.

by TRSChief on Aug 24, 2011 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions

You could be right

I was just wondering. Even if he has been playing OLB for his career maybe a change would do some good. He hasn’t really lit the league up yet so…

Gotta respect that. I’m sure his players do.

I say blame the lockout rules of no workouts with team trainers and doctors!

This has happened too many times this year across the League. Letting players continue to train under the supervision of the teams trainers and doctors most likely would have prevented most of these type injuries.

Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!

I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.

by Lanier63 on Aug 24, 2011 12:51 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed

I work for a sports training company that trains players for NFL combine and we also do NFL off season training. All these injuries, especially the achilles, has me wondering what kind of workouts these guys were doing during the lockout. A lot of guys get hurt when all they do is run and lift run and lift run and lift. No deceleration drills or learning how to stop and go. Plus who knows how much they dedicated to stretching, we do yoga at least 3 times a week.

by SoFloChief on Aug 24, 2011 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions   2 recs

Yeah man, we were always told it was the stretching and the agility drills that prevented these kind of things

Running and hitting the weight room do very little for it.

by TRSChief on Aug 24, 2011 1:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

When all you do is lift to try and get bigger and stronger and then go out and do track type workouts, it doesnt train your ligaments and tendons to adjust to the new weight/load you’ve added to your body. Like you said its the agility drills and lots of deceleration, stop and go, cutting, etc that strengthens your knees, ankles, and feet and allows them to adapt and handle the weight and stress put upon them.

Non issue

He wasn’t going to beat out Belcher anyway. We have enough backup/ST type depth at LB. Next year I am hoping this position gets addressed…draft or FA. Unless Belcher becomes something special, which I just don’t see.

by Carter Walker on Aug 24, 2011 1:21 PM CDT reply actions

Disagree.

He was a 25 year old, who at the very least looked to provide solid depth, perhaps more than that in the future, and was a very good contributor on special teams. By far not the worst player they could have lost, but not a non issue, either.

Not sure

it’s baseless. We do currently have the most room below the cap in the NFL, right? When was the last time the lowest spending team in the league won the SB? When was the last time in the bottom 10 of spending won the SB? I am asking but I think I can guess the answer. You don’t spend just to spend but talent costs money.

by Carter Walker on Aug 24, 2011 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions

I think

we were rated around 15 of the 32 teams on spending, green bay last year was 14th.

by Bigcherokeechief on Aug 24, 2011 1:54 PM CDT up reply actions

The

waters can muddied by talking about cash spending versus the salary cap etc but the point is the Chiefs have the most money available under the cap and teams in that position do not win SB’s

by Carter Walker on Aug 24, 2011 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Cap =/= spending

We’re usually in the middle to top 1/3 in cash spending.

Cap is not the end all be all of financial situations for teams.

The "cap" doesn't even matter until the end of the league year.

Maybe you should address that question then.

If you're point is that the Chiefs aren't spending enough...

I personally don’t care. They have an extremely young team and are still building to win not just this year, but every year. Like I said, I don’t think they’re legitimate Super Bowl contenders, but I wouldn’t think so if they spent a bunch more money either. They’re building a very solid young core, so they can pay their own guys that deserve it, while reloading through the draft. Too early to say whether it will work, but I’m on board with that approach.

by Tarkus on Aug 24, 2011 2:17 PM CDT up reply actions

not ducking anything

This is not the same list I’d seen before so my earlier statement is not accurate to this one.

However, point remains, you can spend a ton of money and still suck, look at Redskins, Seahawks, Raiders as only a few examples.

fine

Whatever. I have plenty of names for you but I’ll keep them to myself. I continue to think you are completely inaccurate on your assessment of what our mgmt is doing. Our mgmt IS spending money and doing it wisely and WILL win the SB sometime soon.

Talk at ya then.

CHIEFS DYNASTY – we’re kind of a big deal

by kabrink on Aug 24, 2011 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions

ok, sorry I lost my cool

Here’s the difference as I see it.
1)You keep stating an opinion and the only “justification” that you can come up with is to state the same thing over and over.
2)At least for me, I made a statement and tried to find the evidence I recalled. I did not yet find it but found similar but different evidence and presented it anyway. It did not fully support my argument – but contradicted your assertion. And even so, you simply ignored the evidence and continue to state your unsupported argument.

You continue to state that simply spending a bunch of money will bring a SB and claim that is your point. But, in reality, your point isn’t that at all. Your real point is that the Chiefs aren’t spending any money. Please support the evidence you have to make that point. Further, produce the evidence that a team spending in the bottom half of salary has NEVER won the SB.

Right. Because that franchise record contract we just gave our pass rush specialist OLB was pretty tightwad-like

The Chiefs and I have mutually agreed on this decision and although I look forward to continuing my career, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Kansas City.

I don't think it should be a knee jerk reaction though

If they haven’t already brought these guys in, then there is no reason to now. I bet they have their eyes on someone currently on another team that may be getting released.
Remember we swipped Toribio last year after the last preseason game with the Packers so we may pick up someone that they have seen in the preseason already.

Entirely over your head

Jed York’s desperate attempt to sell an 18 game schedule by randomly linking to fan violence? Is akin linking Siler’s injury to fan violence OR 18 game schedule. But yanno, it’s like HIV says, jokes are always funnier when explained.

Maybe a blessing in disguise

Wasn’t thrilled with his signing as it spelled trouble for the continued development of Belcher and our project Micah

Yeah.

They could still bring him back, though, if they liked what they saw. He’s only 25.

I agree

He is well worth putting some time into. He is a big dude.

Some available Linebackers for depth if needed....

Joe Pawelek Baylor
Eric Alexander LSU (played in NE during Pioli years)
Chase Blackburn Akron (formerly played for Giants) hybrid weakside/middle lb
Kevin Bentley Northwestern (former Texan)
Lofa Totupu USC
Kirk Morrison SDS

I know...

I started with Pawelek who is noted by his Baylor fame….then I just went with it.

but apparently those tackles came 5 yards past the line of scrimmage. We should sign him jjst to prevent him from going to Oakland

This scared the crap out of me!

On my phone all I could see was “Cheifs lose LB for the Season” and I FLIPPED. Let’s just say that when I seen that it was just Siler, I was happy. Tough break for the guy, he was doing good, but I am happy it wasn’t some other LB.

Ever seen the movie Green Street Hooligans? That's how I feel about my Chiefs.

by zyker on Aug 24, 2011 2:14 PM CDT reply actions

Lofa Tatupu should be the guy we go for

I know it’s going to take a little money but the guy does produce. Belcher is good, but Tatupu does have a great run at production. He even has some playoff & 1 Super Bowl appearance under his belt. That would allow for at least a 3 man rotation in DJ, Tatupu & Belcher.

This is bad for depth

but can we take some more players from San Diego and break them please.

Anyone remember Corey Mays?

If he can show us the same stuff he did two seasons ago (and by that I mean two preseasons) then we have nothing to worry about.

WAIT?

Are we talking about a run this year OR using this as another developmental year? That has been something that has confounded me for a few weeks now. If this is still a developmental year, go with what you have and hope they get better. BUT for those of us who are impatient(me included) go get a couple of more names that you KNOW can do the job. You don’t have to develop a player who already has developed! Just Sayin!
