Kansas City Chiefs Free Agency: Where We Stand Right Now

It's time for another update on where the Kansas City Chiefs stand in free agency. They've signed a couple of their own guys since we last had an update.

The big move we're waiting for is CB Brandon Carr to sign his restricted free agent tender and LB Tamba Hali doing the same to his franchise tender. Neither player can practice until Aug. 4 so there's no cause for concern right now.

The Chiefs have signed 10 undrafted free agents, eight draft picks, 10 unrestricted free agents and four restricted free agents -- a total of 32 moves not including the four players released and a couple moves to come (lookin' at you Brandon and Tamba).

Here's your update on Chiefs free agency right now:

Players under contract released: G Brian Waters, CB Jackie Bates, WR Chris Chambers and TE Brad Cottam.

Free agents signed to Chiefs: WR Steve Breaston (Cardinals), NT Kelly Gregg (Ravens), LB Brandon Siler (Chargers) C Casey Wiegmann, S Jon McGraw, CB Travis Daniels, WR Terrance Copper, TE Leonard Pope, OT Ryan O'Callaghan, RB Jackie Battle, S Reshard Langford (ERFA), OT Barry Richardson, (RFA), DE Wallace Gilberry (RFA) and RB Mike Cox (RFA).

Free agents not re-signed: LB Tamba Hali (franchise tag), CB Brandon Carr (RFA), DE Shaun Smith (Titans), DT Ron Edwards (Panthers), LB Charlie Anderson, FB Tim Castille, LB Corey Mays, C Rudy Niswanger and QB Brodie Croyle. (Italics = Chiefs own their rights.)

2011 NFL draft picks signed: WR Jonathan Baldwin, C Rodney Hudson, DL Allen Bailey, DB Jalil Brown, QB Ricky Stanzi, LB Gabe Miller, DL Jerrell Powe and FB Shane Bannon.

2011 NFL draft picks remaining to sign: LB Justin Houston.

Undrafted free agents signed: Auburn CB Demond Washington, Virginia Union OT David Mims, Tennessee-Chattanooga OL Chris Harr, Texas A&M DT/DE Lucas Patterson, UNC OT Mike Ingersoll, Central Connecticut WR Josue Paul, Oregon DT Brandon Bair, USC OL Butch Lewis, Temple LB Amara Kamara and Michigan State TE Charlie Gantt.

We need Hali and Carr signed ASAP

If KC does nothing else in the free agent market and just gets these guys re-signed long term then I’m happy.

They can't practice til Thurs. so I'm expecting they're in by that point

Tamba will get his long-term deal while Carr will likely have to wait.

Basically they are just milking family time...

Since they can’t practice until the 4th anyways, they seem to be back home milking all the family time they can get. Yes, I’m sure they are hard at work on their own preparing.

According to Pro Football Talk the Chiefs have more than $28.7 million available.

I'm ok with the Chiefs not spending the max cap space

It gives us the room to go get someone later on if we really needed it.
I’ve never felt like over paying/ over spending served us well. Kendrell Bell comes to mind immediately.

How would Hali take up in a new contract?

I’m sure we will ride out his franchise tender this coming season, but hope to sign him long term. Will be interesting to see how his new contract will shake out cap wise. Kamerion Wimberley’s new contract should be a good starting point and then some.

Can restricted free agents speak with other teams

Or the Chiefs.

Could Carr say he’d sign X contract if a team acquired him through the tender process or a trade? Is that tampering by the other team if they speak to a restricted free agent?

Just wondering if negotiations or potential negotiations might be the holdup. Certainly he could hope the Chiefs would trade him (presumably for less than a first round pick).
