Sounds Like WR Keary Colbert Has Legit Shot To Make Chiefs Roster
When the Kansas City Chiefs signed WR Keary Colbert out of the blue the other day I figured it was another body for training camp and didn't think much about it. I mean, it's been two years since he played in the NFL so his chances of making the team couldn't be that good.
Apparently they're better than we think. Peter King of SI.com was in St. Joe yesterday for Chiefs training camp and spoke with Todd Haley about Colbert's signing.
Todd Haley told me today that Colbert's agent sent the club a YouTube video of Colbert working out recently, "and we thought it must have been photoshopped, it looked so good. Then we worked him out, and he looked terrific. Unless it's a mirage, he'll be in the thick of things for a job here."
As King points out, he may have to beat our WR Jerheme Urban to find a spot on the roster. Here's how the Chiefs depth chart at receiver shakes out right now:
WR: Dwayne Bowe, Dexter McCluster, Terrance Copper, Zeke Markshausen, Keary Colbert, Chris Manno
WR: Jerheme Urban, Steve Breaston, Jonathan Baldwin, Verran Tucker, Jeremy Horne, Chandler Williams, Josue Paul
They'll probably keep as few as five or as many as seven receivers. At this point my "locks" would be Bowe, Breaston and Baldwin. McCluster appears he will really be a running back so let's toss his name out of the receiver discussion.
So that's three total spots at receiver. Copper just received a multi-year deal and he's a terrific special teamer so I think he makes it, which makes four players. My final 1-3 players, depending on how many they keep, would come down to Urban, Tucker, Horne and...Colbert?
It's going to be a lot of fun watching this play out.

Bowe, Breaston and Baldwin, obvious locks
McCluster, agreed doesn’t count, but he’s a lock as well.
I think the #5 WR (yes, I skipped #4) is Copper. They love his ST ability and I think they are counting on him.
So the biggest battle is for #4, and I agree it’s down to Urban, Tucker, Horne and…Colbert?
I think only one is ‘guaranteed’ to make the roster, and wouldn’t be at all surprised if they go with ‘only’ 5, considering the use of McCluster, Moeaki and even Charles in the slot.
I would bet on Urban if I had to, but that’s just my guess at this point.
I'm going to go against the popular thinking and say Urban gets cut.
I like Tucker and maybe Colbert?
Urban has been playing really well in camp why would he get cut
Copper is to valuable on ST as a tackler to cut. He is amazing. Our special teams would hurt without terrance copper. I like tucker but i say he has to be cut and colbert. but thats just me
Special team are overrated
Especailly with no kick returns in 2011 and with a punter who can boom it and pin fools deep.

ST is overrated
Tell that to the Chargers.
The Chiefs and I have mutually agreed on this decision and although I look forward to continuing my career, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Kansas City.

I really do hate that rule change.
It’s pretty awful.

and it could backfire big time
Kickers hanging kickoffs up there for guys to field at the 5 yard line…allowing the coverage team more time to get down the field & blast the returner.

KC will be a Superbowl favorite in 2012
that's where a good special teams coordinator comes into play.
just like what westhoff was telling his guys this last preseason game.
good thing we have one of those, eh? :P

The only difference is in kickoffs.
Copper’s was a bigger difference maker on punts.
Also, supposedly 60% of kickoffs will still be returned this year. Down, but not eliminated by any means.
Copper makes the team.
I appreciate that you at least caveat your made up stat (made up not necessarily by you) with "supposedly"
You can't live that American dream on foot, bro. Aint nobody riding horses no more.
I read it in Peter King piece
It was based on the first round of preseason games, I believe.
And yes, I said supposedly.
do you realize the difference in starting on the 20, and the 25? I mean do you?

Attribute rules change to Players . They lobbied for safer rules to reduce injuries.
Overrated in 2011 (and until the rules are changed) when that ginger bitch Goodell won’t let teams return kicks
I see alot of teams pooching ball or hanging it high to trap team inside 25 yd line. That requires good KO coverage. Don’t forget their are also Punt coverage, Punt Rec’vng and other STs as well. Key blocks require smaller agile players who can get in way of oppenents Kick coverage guys.
"You talkin' to me? You TALKIN' to me ?" - Travis Bickle
it probably will result in fewer injuries, because more kicks WILL be unreturnable.
But I don’t think it changes much in terms of what you’re looking for in your players, and players making their main contribution on STs.
would of ≠ would've
And last I checked, San Diego didn't have a Colquitt

in fact, hasn’t he actually been better than Colquitt in some recent season?

yes. Scifres is a heck of a punter, he isnt the coffin corner punter that colquitt is, but hes VERY good
and the blocked punts werent on him

SD has one of the best punters in football in mike scifres.
and those blocked punts were not on him….
Team Pioli/Haley. Decade of the Chiefs.
Team Colquitt
that is by far the most ridiculous statement ive ever read on AP. I am NOT kidding
yes the nfl has for the MOMENT, made kickoffs far less of a factor( altho SD DID return one for a score)…you still have coverage on punts…and overall field position control
what you will see is kickers trying to place kicks around the 2-3 yardline high in the air, placement kicks….
field position wins games, and the freaking difference starting from the 20 or the 25 is INSANE. add in that charger team, 1 in O, 1 in D, and they dont make thep layoffss….why….SPECIAL TEAMS…not kickoff returns, but BLOCKED PUNTS ALLOWED, PUNT RETURN SCORES ALLOWED….KICKS MISSED
seriously, dumbest freaking comment ever
do you really REALLY try hard to piss people off? or is it just that you must go controversial about everything? I mean really, if its all so bad, negative, and doesnt matter, why dont you find a different sport, because in THIS sport…special teams wins football games, field position wins football games.
You, and all the others who treat ST like a coin flip better realize its the best judge of your roster top to bottom in terms of discipline.
And yeah, Im bias, but you know, you spend time around men who are credited for SUPER BOWL WINS, and you learn something. Take the 99 Rams, they dont win a super bowl without special teams. they lose to the darn vikings in the playoffs when tony horne would have had to take a touchback instead of taking it house. I can go on and on and on
special teams also includes the gary anderson miss for an undefeated vikings team, snow field goals by viniateri in a super bowl
coverage on punts, field goals, blocked punts etc…
I cant believe I even have to defend special teams

Can someone photoshop Stanzi's picture over Colbert's?
...the fair-weather fan seldom comprehends the value of faith or will combined with the requirements necessary of goal accomplishment: attention to a plan's details, personal fortitude developed from a consistent quality work ethic, and strengthening of character and faith, are all sweaty, time-consuming, attributes which "the sky is falling" fair-weather fan interprets as rain on their parade...

Hands look solid
Of course it’s a demo tape so that will happen.
I did like the part around 2:50 when his practice fella was intentionally winging shitty passes at him to see how he would handle it – high, low, outside, etc.
I’m all for competition and depth at WR – it’s been so long since I’ve felt comfortable beyond our 1 and 2… maybe 3. Having depth at WR just isn’t something I’m prepared to deal with as a Chiefs fan.

Off topic but did anyone else see this? Who cares about Harr but Harris could be one to keep an eye on...
– Add G Darryl Harris and G/T Chris Harr to the injury report, as both players had to be helped off the field in Monday’s practice. Harris appeared to have a right knee injury, something he has battled throughout college and pro seasons. He did not return to the session. Harr’s injury was not immediately apparent, but he was doubled over in pain after coming off a running play.
Nothing wrong with that
If he turns out not so good, he’ll just be depth and will be a good locker room guy. If he contributes and makes some plays then what a steal. Low risk high reward.

I love Tucker
He played really good on ST’s last year. Even though the kickoff coverage team is really eliminated this year.
But not punt coverage
The Chiefs and I have mutually agreed on this decision and although I look forward to continuing my career, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Kansas City.
Our punter handles a lot of that
and besides with our offense we won’t be punting much. Hopefully haha
Could be, maybe not always
We will always have the option to kick a high-floating KO and attempt to swarm him inside the 20. Having the spot at the 35 also puts the coverage team 5 yards closer. If someone wanted to make a thing of it – they would have their kicker working on placing KO’s just inside the goal-line, tempting returners to come out instead of taking a knee. With the extra 5 yards on coverage and the idea of maximizing hang-time, you could potentially pin guys inside of the 20 with some frequency.
Now, if you have the lead and things are going well – I’d just boot that fucker deep every time so there is no risk.
So I’d say teams still have options, and depending on the situation might use either/or.
Also worth noting that you may see more on-sides kicks as the extra 5 yard buffer ever-so-slightly reduces risk.
by Ochophosphate on Aug 16, 2011 12:25 PM CDT up reply actions
I just think if we're playing lights out defense
Theres no need to take the risk, put them on the 20 and call it a day. Usually on kickoffs there isn’t a need to pin them inside the 20, touchbacks were always considered good things
Exzachary
but if you’re down in a game and you want a shot at a strip/fumble/muff or whatever other catastrophe can happen during a return, take the chance (which also puts you at risk for giving up a score).
I understand where people think this is going to be “touchback central” in 2011 – I just think there are still options available for those teams willing to take the risk.

I would say about Tucker
his biggest draw back is route running. He just doesn’t have the moves to get open in the NFL a lot, the kids got good hands thought.
Colbert, can’t make much out of the video, this is a great season when your letting good players go because you have to many of them.
by Bigcherokeechief on Aug 16, 2011 12:12 PM CDT reply actions
Yes. Tucker is good at high-pointing the ball.
And on busted plays, especially, I think he has a feel for the soft spot in the zone. But not really scaring anybody with his speed or elusiveness. While I think there will be more emphasis on area throws to tightly covered receivers, completion percentages aren’t going to be that great if every pass is contested. That’s why I think that Horne might have the edge on Tucker, at this point.

Yeah seriously.
Talk about going to the right place at the right time.
The Chiefs and I have mutually agreed on this decision and although I look forward to continuing my career, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Kansas City.
Let's take special teams out of the discussions now....
Why? 1) The 35 yrd line KO eliminates most all returns and those that are, are pooched kicks with even more time to cover and returners are screwed. 2) Need big boys for FG’s (hey!! extra guy for the line now that ST is obsolete!! MIMMS) 3) Punt’s….Once again one of the best Hang Time punters. 4) PR, let’s just fair catch everything and run the ball down the longer field and run the clock out.
Big Gulps EH????? All right.....Welp....See Ya Later!
You're Right!
improved field postion from punt returns is contrary to our gameplan. Punt returns do not drain enough clock!
Colbert was actually a really good rookie.
For whatever reason his career tanked after that but if he wins the spot then there’s a reason he wins the spot.

but remember that he is still PS eligible this year. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tucker or Copper (somewhat the same player) dropped and Colbert kept.
