The Kansas City Chiefs Backup QB Problem

From the FanPosts -Joel

It's been four days since the "practice" the Kansas City Chiefs had against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the one constant from everyone's mouth is: 'The season is over if QB Matt Cassel goes down.'

The fear of Chiefs fans everywhere could become reality, as it happens every year to a majority of teams for at least one game due to everything from concussions to, oh say, an appendectomy.

So it raises the question: Do the Chiefs need to go after a veteran to back up Cassel or do we have the answer here in camp?

Star-divide

This dilemma is multi-fold for the Chiefs. First, there aren't very many quality quarterbacks who do not have a job right now. But let's take a look at all angles and possibilities, shall we?

THE FREE AGENTS (Not listing all, even though JT O'Sullivan was tempting)

Jake Delhomme- 36 years old, injury prone of late. Clearly his best days are way behind him. He did serve a small role as a mentor for Colt McCoy and even joined him in offseason workouts, but he has been cut by two teams in two years (and it's never good when it's the Panthers and Browns). Cassel does not need a mentor and we as a team most likely will not require his services. I do hope he lands somewhere but I don't think it's likely.

Jim Sorgi- Of course! Jim Sorgi, the guy has backed up two Super Bowl champs, and must have tons of experience that he could bring to the Chiefs. If you, like I, like to wager on the occasional football game, then you are quite familiar with seeing Sorgi play in week 17 over the years for the Indianapolis Colts. It's not pretty. While he would bring brains and his mentality is built for the "right 53", this does not serve as an improvement over our current backups.

Troy Smith- He is an interesting choice. Solid athlete, mobile in the pocket, not an accurate passer. Could he be a servicable backup? I honestly think out of this group he would be the biggest possible on-field contributor. His 51.7 career completion percentage is a little frightening but it's a role he is accustomed to. Still, I do not envision GM Scott Pioli and Todd Haley finding him to be worthy of acquiring.

Brian Brohm- Sorry. No.

Brodie Croyle- Moving along, shall we?

THE RETIREES

Kerry Collins- I, like many, have admired Collins' victory over his personal demons, and there have been very few quarterbacks over time who have seemingly laid it all out there when given the chance like Collins. When you think of the craziness that had to be going on in Tennessee, it's a credit to Collins that not one negative thing was said about him and that he went to work ready to play every day, healthy or hurt. I genuinely think he is done though and while I think his demeanor would be good for our young guys, that's Cassel's job to do. Fare thee well Kerry.

Brett Favre- I am not serious about this, but how amazing would a Favre-Haley showdown on the sideline be?

Marc Bulger- The missing fourth Raven? Marc was out for all of 2010 and while some of his former teammates think he has a lot left in the tank, my feeling is if he did he would have marketed himself a little better than calling it a day.

THE CONTENDER

Tyler Palko- I am not going to ever completely slam a Chief. I will be honest about them though. I live in the Northeast, so Big East football is always on, even if it's sometimes the Louisville-Syracuse game. Palko was not even a good/great quarterback at Pitt. I realize the connection coach Haley has with Pittsburgh, and he and Tyler have a great relationship. He theoretically "knows the system" inside and out. You or I could spend years on the sideline and know the system as well. I think Tyler is a great option for a third quarterback for a team, I really do. If Haley appoints him the No. 2 guy for good, we go with it and hit up church a lot more than usual.

THE GUY

Ricky Stanzi- Is he ready? Nope. Is he the second best quarterback on our roster? Absolutely. Listening to Bob and Josh on 610 Sports this morning, I keep hearing the "Well, he's just a rookie" excuse. It's a viable one, but here are some other rookies that just got their playbooks and are going to be called on potentially at some point: QB Cam Newton, QB Andy Dalton, QB Jake Locker, QB Colin Kaepernick. I am not ready to order my Stanzi City Chiefs t-shirt yet, but when it comes down to it I would roll the dice with Stanzi over any of the aforementioned quarterbacks. Will he take some lumps? Sure, but this is the one guy the team and Chiefs nation would rally behind the strongest in this author's opinion. In summation, the talk about a veteran quarterback should be shelved for now and we need to move forward with Stanzi as the backup.

This all hit me as I woke up this morning and the "rookie" label, while true, is not something that should keep us from promoting Stanzi to the backup position and possibly considering the release of Palko. With that said, Matt Cassel is really "the guy", and let's be thankful we have him and let's hope he has an injury free campaign.

tough call

I think Stanzi will be a capable backup… but can he be that guy today? not sure

I would sign a veteran, and I agree Troy Smith is a decent option…

nice post here … I’ll abstain since Pioli cares not for my opinion (or yours or … hey, you over there! Pioli doesn’t want YOUR opinion, either! what? oh, sorry Todd, carry on)

I have always thought he may have a chance with someone like Haley as his coach

Why not give him a little to no risk type of contract and see if he can get his act together. Everyone else seems to get their second chance so why not this guy who really does have the physical tools.

Go with Stanzi

There are worse things that could happen to a team built like ours. We can lean on the running game and generally play solid defense. I don’t think going with a rookie QB is the worst thing in the world, in fact I think it would speed along with the development.

They have a serious 1st string offensive line problem. Have since the Oakland and Baltimore games last year.

Getting rid of Waters might have been the first step, but figuring out how this line fits together and who starts is still looming out there and leaving us with an uncertain feeling.

They will wait until after week 1 and sign a veteran free agent.

Then their salary is not guaranteed and they pay them week to week. They can keep the vet on the roster until Stanzi is ready to be the backup (could be a few weeks or the whole season).

Exactly

I was wondering if anyone else was thinking this while I was reading the article. We carried 2 QBs on our roster and hopped for the best last year. They’ll do it again this year for at least the first game. Then we’ll grab the best available QB.

The newest mathematical constant: David Mims > David Mims. Mathematicians everywhere must reluctantly agree.

Honestly,

I think they are trying out Palko while searching the landscape for a better option. If it doesn’t work out, watch Croyle be re-signed for a one-year deal. I think they feel they have a guy that knows the playbook and could step in if need be. Just looking for something better in the mean time without having to carry his salary.

by BinSC on Aug 16, 2011 12:57 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed -

I wouldn’t be totally surprised if we did end up re-signing Croyle.

Think about it.

1. Franchise QB – Matty
2. Future QB – Stanzi
3. Journeyman QB – Croyle

We let go of Gutierrez to allow for this scenario.. But, we’ll see.

I also do not think a veteran is that important to have on the sidelines

Because we have a very good QB coach right now. Cassel may not give up any snaps all season…so it would be a wasted signing. I think Stanzi holding the clipboard watching Cassel with Zorn is a great setup.

With the new rule in place allowing a 46th active gameday player,

I don’t think it matters who is 2nd or 3rd string on the depth chart. No need really to designate a 3rd string QB anymore. Haley will go with whomever he thinks is more prepared, and you better believe if Cassel does go down, they will be on a very short gameday leash.

by Chiefphish on Aug 16, 2011 1:46 PM CDT reply actions

You have it backwards.

They’re less likely to carry three QBs on game day now, not more. So the backup QB is more important than ever.

by Tarkus on Aug 16, 2011 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I can see the logic in that, but I disagree

Rather than having your 3rd stringer be the “just-in-case” guy sitting on the bench that you would only put in if necessary, your back-up designation under the old rules made it much more important who was 2nd string or 3rd string. Now, teams are basically forced to carry both 2nd and 3rd string on the active roster and are essentially interchangable. The only way the named backup is more important now is if the team only activates 2 QB’s on gameday, which is highly unlikely for teams like the Chiefs with 2 unproven backups, hence, naming the 2nd or 3rd guy not as important anymore.

I will be interested to see how many teams only carry 2 QB’s on the gameday actives, but I have a good feeling that not many teams will.

by Chiefphish on Aug 16, 2011 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Everybody will

Why carry three qbs? Once every 1000 games you get two hurt in the same game. Everybody will use the extra game day slot for an extra defensive role player or ST ace…

True

I think Stanzi has some fantastic tools as an NFL QB, I’m just saying I have seen his peripheral vision fail on many occasions, hence all the pick 6’s. That being said, he has also proven to be an outstanding come from behind QB on many occasions. There is definately some potential there.

by Bobudabi on Aug 16, 2011 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions

You need to make better assumptions.
Will he take some lumps? Sure, but this is the one guy the team and Chiefs nation would rally behind the strongest in this author’s opinion.

We can’t even get Chiefs nation to rally behind Matt Cassel. If you think for one second that they won’t chastise this kid the first time he throws three interceptions in a game, well as Judas Priest says, “You got another thing coming”.

David Garrard -outrageously underrated, Better than Cassel
Bruce Gradkowski – Just a gamer

Brian Hoyer – tools to start?
Matt Flynn – raw but appealing
Mark Brunell – still has debts to pay

All of those guys

Are on a team right now except Pennington and without double checking I believe Brunell is done. There’s no way we are giving up anything to go after any of those guys. Not bad players, just not happening.

by Steve_in_RI on Aug 16, 2011 2:26 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

It's difficult to take you seriously after you seem so sure that he isn't..

Garrard is so underrated it’s disgusting, and it’s just because he doesn’t post flashy numbers (read: lots of TDs). I would take him in a playoff game any day over Cassel.

Garrard straight up took the job in Jacksonville, beating out the established guy and a promising youngster, and he’s stayed there.

I’m not saying we should make a play for him. For one thing it’s not an option and for another I’m just as content sticking with Cassel at this point. But he is certainly not worse than Cassel. Come on, don’t knock the guy just because you don’t see him on ESPN.

Well he wasn't correcting anybody on a comment.

He corrected them on a story. There’s a difference.

As he said above, most writers who want to be good writers don’t mind being told when they’re fucking up. It’s not “looking down on” anyone. You must be really scared of criticizing someone or being criticized.

It’s like Kissel. I corrected him, and he just got cocky and refused to ever admit he was wrong. He obviously has no interest in doing his job the best he can, and I have a hard time respecting that.

by bamachief5558 on Aug 17, 2011 11:32 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I thought the substance of the article was fine.

In most cases, there are at least one of two issues with backup quarterbacks.

First, there’s uncertainty. With some backup quarterbacks, their game performance is unknown until they actually get thrown into a game or two for more than just a couple of drives. Practice and preseason cannot fully substitute for the pressures of a real game against a tough opponent.

On the other hand, some backups are known quantities. In such cases, there is usually good reason that they are a backup and not starting. I think most veterans we could bring in would fall into this category.

My own inclination would be to go with the young quarterback that comes with a lot of uncertainty. They might crash and burn, or they might do something great. For example, in 1998, Kurt Warner completed only 4 of 11 passes for a total of 39 yards as a third string quarterback. The next year, filling in for an injured Trent Green, he completed 65.1% of his passes for 4353 yards and a Super Bowl ring. Our own Matt Cassel filled in for an injured Tom Brady in 2008, resulting in an 11-5 season.

I’m not in favor of bringing in a veteran*. I’d rather give one of our young guys a chance to step up and do something great. If it doesn’t work out, well, we’ll have earlier draft picks to pick someone better!

*I’ve yet to have either Pioli or Haley ask me for my opinion of the roster.

Stanzi eventually will be fine as a #2, but as of now, that’s expecting too much from a 5th rounder.

still not sold on Capt. America

so I think we do need a vet backup, cut the “Replacements” QB and let Capt. America learn a year behind a vet and Cassel before throwing him into the #2 spot. My choice of all the QBs listed and I know its going to get blasted is Favre. Use some of that 32 million free cap money and get him as a backup as long as he knows its a backup and only play in case of injury, mop up duty goes to Stanzi

Believe me he is the type of guy I WISH was the answer with his pedigree. But he has not played since 2008, did not get in during the 2006 sesason, and he is 2-3 as a starter over seven seasons.

I'd feel better with a veteran on board.

There are a few Free Agent veterans, who have all been starters at one time or another, have had some brief periods of success, and could be picked up just by paying their Medicare premiums for a year. Guys like Todd Collins, JP Losman, Patrick Ramsey and Troy Smith would welcome a chance to hold the clipboard for a year, until Stanzi gets some experience. Are they an upgrade over Stanzi? I don’t know yet, but I think Palko needs cut (yeah, the same guy I was bragging about recently. I admit, I haven’t been med.-compliant lately). I will trust Pioli’s and Haley’s judgment, as they seem to have a pretty good track record, but there are some capable veterans out there that could fill in for a game or two, or longer, if needed.

There once was a man from Nantucket......Nevermind.

Got the perfect backup solution:

Matt Cassel! Seriously, kill two birds with one stone. A much more pressing concern right now is our starting QB dilema. We definitely need a good sarting QB before we go shopping for a serviceable backup. And Cassel would be a GREAT backup. He’d be more comfortable watching the games anyway-win/win! Trade for a real QB, trade up and draft luck this next draft, we have options. But for the love of cheesecake!!!! can we not please address the more pressing concern??? We have a clown as our starting QB! He’ll never lead us to any superbowl! He makes “terror-panic face” in every game! Fellow KC fans PLEASE stop acting as though there’s not a 2nd/3rd tier elephant in the room pretending to be our starting QB. This must be remedied!

would make Ditka’s trade for Ricky Williams look genius. Because it’s so common for someone to trade arguably the best QB prospect in years. Especially with the new rookie wage cap, which makes him even more valuable.

Hmmm.....

I really dont know who in the NFL is better than matt cassel…. Oh wait! 1/3 of all backups! and 2/3 of all starters! for instance, tampa bay’s 2nd stringer who got Powened by our big man would be an immediate upgrade to cassel for god’s sake. There are a handfull of guys on benches who would be. Look at the drew brees trade. things like that happen. I’m not the head of player personel or the gm, so really i know nothing accept that cassel’s an incompetent wimp. I ask you this: do you think we have a solid enough core of really good young players now to trade our 1st n 2nd this draft and 1st in nxt draft to get Luck, the most complete QB coming out of college since Peyton Manning (more complete than was matt ryan) and not be shooting our foot clean off? I don’t know the answer, but i have a hunch it’s ‘yes’. We’d be a super bowl team in 2 years if we pulled a matt ryan, no?

Apparently I like Cassel more than some other people around here but that is discussion for another post. As far as back up QB, I pose this question, (do you think the chiefs will go to the Superbowl this year). My friends call me an eternal optimist and even I don’t think that will happen. However, the amount of improvement we have made over the last two years gives me a great amount of belief that if the improvement continues, we might have a real shot at it in the next season or two. So why the hell would you not make Stanzi your back up and get him as much experience as possible so that he will be ready to step in and win a game or two next year if we need it.
