Well Played
When I first started watching the Chiefs first preseason game against the Bucks, I have to admit that I was frustrated in the fact that Cassel did not throw a pass and that JC did not carry the rock. But after taking a step back and thinking about the strategy that Haily was using, I have come to agree with him not playing most of the starters. I have read many post that have already hit the panic button. I believe in Haily and his coaching staff. As of right now, the Chiefs know who most of their starters are and their abilities on the Field. What they do not know is, who are the players backing up these starters? Todd Haily has put together a good foundation of players but has yet to build depth. Since the foundation has been set, it is time to look for players that have the potential to make the roster.
Since the starters did not play much at all, we the fans and the Chiefs coaching staff have now seen the players that are worthy of a spot and those that need to be released. I bet we all agree that Justin Houston, Jon Baldwin, Justin Cole, Stanzi and Powe are all players that needed time on the field and showed us that they have skill. We also got to see players that have the potential but need lots of work like, Rodney Hudson, A. Bailey, Jalil Brown, Sheffield and Bannan. Furthermore, it became obvious that some of the players that made the team last year might not have made the improvements to make the team this year, such as, Palko, Q. Lawerance, Copper, Verran, and others. Unfortunately, we saw that our depth with the O-line is not where it needs to be.
Even though we are all disappointed in the fact that we did not get to see our Chiefs, we did get to see players that are going to make contributions and those that might be our future. So with that, I must say, "well played" to Todd Haily and his staff. This first preseason was a success, just not in the way we wanted it to be.

You bring up some good points but...
Just want to clarify for you that it is Todd HALEY and not Todd Haily.
Haha I spell with the worse of them, but...
For crying out loud he is our head coach. lol Just trying to give him a heads up for future postings. ;)
and who are the Bucks?
I know there used to be an NBA franchise in Milwaukee …
all hail Kareem!

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Score means nothing to me in the first preseason game
I agree with your words.
Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!
I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.
I'm not concerned at all with the turnout
In the backfield, I think we’d all agree it’s a lock that Charles, Jones, McCluster and McClain are making the team. It was good to see a lot of Battle and Bannon and see if they’re worth keeping if the team decides to keep 5 or 6 in the backfield. On the o-line, I think we all know Albert, Lilja, Weigmann, Asamoah and Hudson are locks. Gaither is undecided at this point, so it’s nice to see a lot of Barry Richardson, Daryl Harris, etc. to see if any of those guys are worth keeping as the 6th, 7th, and 8th offensive linemen. Same theory on the defensive side of the ball too. I think the top 6-7 guys along the line, linebackers and secondary are locks…they just wanted to find out among a large group of people remaining who would stand out. Essentially, it’s a large battle for the last roster spot among each position. I’m not worried about final scores until the regular season.
Your eyes tell you more than any statistics can.
While i did'nt like the final outcome of the game, we all have to remember it's just pre-season
I do however believe Haley could have done something to stop the Bucs from blitzing every down. He should’ve blitzed them as well even if it took sending 11 to get the point accross, they would have calmed down some IMO.

Prediction for 2011:
Doctors will find out that Tebows blue balls were effecting his ability to throw a accurate pass.
I really hope we incorporate that Ronde Barber blitz we saw in the 2nd play into our own bag-o-tricks.
I’m not liking that it happened to us, but it WAS a pretty sweet play on their part.
I hates me some donkeys...
Yup. They're motioning to take the temperature of the D. See who shifts with the motion man.
It’s only logical to send that guy on the blitz. If you’re going to send the HB to the motion side (counter-intuitive to ME), the motion man better freakin’ block his opposite number. Charles did absolutely no good going out for a pass, without accounting for his guy.
Personally, I think KC will mostly run away from the motion man, be he Charles or McCluster. I think they make more hay sending the two speed backs in opposite directions. Drawing defenders away does them more good than the number of defenders either one is going to block on the play side.

still leaves QB more vulnerable, no?
ie, to someone breaking thru line or a DELAYED blitz

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Depends on how quick the QB can get the ball out, and how many guys are open, when they send enough to harass the QB.
And all I’m saying is there’s more than one way to skin a cat, and I like those speed guys for drawing defenders away more than I care to see ‘em lead-blocking on the play side. Especially Dex. When you send him ’n’ Charles to the same area, with the idea of one of ’em blocking for the other, I think you get less out of it. Dex/Charles are threats that have to be accounted for.
I think the idea is hot-route to the slot guy, when his opposite number blitzes. On Friday night, we saw that blitz and saw how effective it was if he came unblocked when the play was going to attack that slot on the ground.
When I said “play side” it was in reference to the run. As it relates to QB protections, I’m tending to send the QB in the opposite direction, too. Again, I see both Charles and Dex as doing more by being screen threats than by straight-up blocking. Throwing against the grain of the pass rush, when it comes to those two. Get ‘em in space outside, if pass rushers want to take the bait. Establish that, and they’re taking one or two guys out of the pass rush, because they daren’t give up the contain on our two super-fast backs.

I would have to disagree
Regardless of what the homer announcers were saying, In my opinion the bucs had the gameplan of a team that needed a confidence builder win. They knew that without many of our starters and being the first plays of the first preseason game, we wouldn’t be ready for the blitz . . . Surprised they didn’t try a flea flicker or two! Now, I’m a homer but if you look at what their offense did against our 2nd and 3rd team (they left the starters in until mid Q2). I’m feeling pretty good . . .

On the other hand....
You just missed the oppurtunity to get your starters playing together in a short training camp. I’d rather get them banged up now vs. later. I didn’t like the decision.
I respect your opinion, but they have a short timetable and a lot of open competition taking place.
I think that takes precedence over polishing the starters’ game. And I’d just as soon see them take the same approach for the whole preseason.

A loss is a loss....
A first game loss can keep you out of the playoffs as quickly as a late season loss. I’m all against playing JC, but the rest of them could have seen a good 20 minutes of play. I’m guessing they will play as much as a half this time around. I’d rather start off playing them and back off for games 3-4. Nobody can tell me Cassel doesn’t need the game day practice.
That's fine. I still think they're going to try to get looks at the hopefuls versus opposing #1s.
Maybe slowly working in the starters more, and finishing Game 4 with the most starters. Let them get warmed up against teams that are sitting their starters. Same number of snaps for everybody, but better evals for the hopefuls and an easy confidence-builder for the starters to cap it off.
I think the traditional starters emphasis in Game 3 and protect your starters in Game 4 is a tradition that may not have a whole lot of basis, other than it’s the way it’s always done. Depends on your flight path to peak by Week 1 of regulation.
Main thing I really liked about Game 1, again, is the hopefuls weren’t getting artificial boost in evals, because they’re facing #2s and #3s. No more of this tear it up in preseason and disappear during the season.

No way...
you put the first stringers against crazy people trying to play for their lives, (game 4), Guys going at it 70% vs guys going 120%…as in…late hits, etc. is a recipe for injuries. I do like the idea of rotating the guys in against #1’s to evaluate against better talent, but late in camp you are only looking at a couple of guys….you hope.
That's the conventional wisdom, 12t.
I try to take nothing for granted, except my own exalted wisdom. So I’m open to the idea that my #1 guys in the trenches are probably going to have their way with #2s from another team, and they know how to protect themselves. I think the guys most likely to get their bells rung or folded-up are #2s and rookies against #1s, when not only are they in the fight of their lives, but the other 10 guys don’t have their backs/sides/fronts.
I’m arguing/speculating that fielding your #1s against others’ #2s might actually be beneficial, in spite of the commonly held “That guy’s playing for his football LIFE and is gonna hurt somebody” theory.
But I don’t think the returning vets need a whole lot of snaps, to begin with, other than to confirm what is mostly obvious. So I’m just as open to the idea of minimal snaps (as I am to seeing our #1s get more snaps against weaker competition) from #1s throughout preseason, with more snaps for likely #1s who are younger and just about to earn their first starting gig. I can see wanting to give Tyson Jackson more snaps (but not many, total), since he’s still re-establishing himself off the knee injury. And that’s pretty much what I saw in Game 1. In other words, I discount the “unit cohesion” aspects of preseason, and I REALLY want to see my #2s and hopefuls getting film against opposing #1s. That’s where the growth potential of the team is most clearly seen, imo.
Another aspect of “our #1s agaiinst their #2s” is that it’s what you’d do if you wanted them to get a few snaps AND you wanted to get a real good reading on your new(er) guys against #1s. Let other teams try to look good in preseason. But YOU try to learn and grow as much as possible, regardless of how everybody else thinks it ought to be done.

with some 10 acl tear injuries in 2 weeks...then you see hiram eugene and chaz shillens down for the raiders....
Id prefer if we took as conservative an approach as possible
i do however think at some point, we do need some reps with our new players(the guys especially on offense, cassel to breaston, cassel to baldwin)…but i have no idea when we will see that or if haley will just trust that the practice field will be enough. that would scare me.
but if he can get our team through the 4 weeks with zero major injuries, I think that puts the chiefs as one of the preseason winners
Team Pioli/Haley. Decade of the Chiefs.
Team Colquitt
This is probably the first tie in 4 or 5 years
That I was able to listen to/watch the Chiefs losing a preseason game and not be cursing at the screen/radio because of how god awful our team was. I actually laughed a lot Friday. The botched hand off between Harris and Cassel was funny. The fact that TB was trying so damn hard to win a preseason game was funny.
For the first time in years I actually considered a preseason game just that… a preseason game. Not a game that I desperately wanted the Chiefs to win because wins for the Chiefs were so few and far between.
No, I am happy to watch the Chiefs evaluate talent and treat these games like a glorified practice. We have an identity now. We know we have stars on our team. We pretty much know who will start. There’s no need or want to open the playbook and risk our starters getting injured for a preseason game.
Plus, consider our opponents this year.
The Raiders twice – they are a physical team, like it or not.
The Chargers twice.
Chicago – another physical team.
GB – another physical team.
NE – Another physical team.
PIT – yes, physical. Very.
DET – physical DL.
Keep in mind that we play some big, tough, physical teams this year. It may be wise to keep out players as fresh as possible through training camp/preseason.
