A Killer Post About Ricky Stanzi
Here's what I thought of Ricky Stanzi's performance against Tampa: I loved what I saw.
The guy had ZERO help. The Little Giants did a better job blocking than the guys in front of him. And he took a beating. Yet he was still competitive and managed to make a few good plays. I was surprised to see how well he could scramble. I'd be curious to see what he could do behind the first team O-line.
Tonight one of my co-workers said she watched the game and she said this about him: "That kid looked like a young Brett Favre."
Hearing that was like music to my ears. Some of us here at AP see him as KC's version of Tom Brady. But her comparison of him to #4 was good news to me. Just don't send out pictures of your junk to random ladies, Ricky.
I know the guy is still a little rough around the edges but he showed a lot of moxie in a game that was in desperate need of it.
Anyways, what did you guys think about Stanzi?

Whoa, whoa, whoa...
Easy killer. Dude had some zip on his passes, but there are a lot of guys that come into the league that way.
Casey Printers could run and fling the ball.
I’m all for the second coming of Brady, but let the kid cook for a year or two before we annoint him ‘the chosen one’

I don't have a problem with facts, statics now....
To quote Mark Twain, “There’s lies, damn lies and statistics”
I don’t trust statistics when they don’t pass the eyeball test. Especially statistics that are arcane and using a methodology that is not well understood.
I hope like hell that guy is right, but there are so many random variables here that I’ll reamin in “show me” mode. Cautiously optimistic with a critical eye towards any info that comes my way.
I like the sentiment he’s selling though.

He passes the Parcell's QB test
The only QB to do so in the whole draft I believe.

If Stanzi becomes anything close to Favre this team will be experience a decade of dominance
but he’s only played one game.. Let’s temper our expectations
BOOM!
I don't see how anyone can evaluate Stanzi from that game
Nicknames I have coined:
Jamaal Charles = 'Haley's Comet'
Shaun Smith = 'Big Nasty'
Kelly Gregg = 'Old Gregg'
one can't
tough guy? ok, fine, I’ll go with that … future franchise QB and HoF’er? yeah, just a wee bit early to know …

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
I'm not a Stanzi fan
and his stats didnt look good, but I came away impressed. I have NFL Network and have seen tons of replays of other rookie QBs, most of which were taken ahead of him, and very few seemed to have a good “mental clock”…the part of their brain that says “hurry up and do something or else some bad shit is about to happen.” Stanzi may not have made great plays, and I attribute a lot of that to running with 3rd and 4th teamers, but he certainly looked to have the alertness and instinctive/protective nature or whatever to know that he cant sit in the pocket all day.
Your eyes tell you more than any statistics can.

I hates me some donkeys...
I really like the pick. I like Stanzi
But this whole “stanzi thing” is really gonna bug me. Loudest cheer of the night Friday came when Slick Rick Stanzi entered the game. I know people really like him but lets not mistake wanting him to be good with him actually being good. I said it earlier. Just because the man loves America and is likable doesnt mean he’s any good at being an NFL QB.
To be fair
I think that cheer had just as much to do with the fact that Palko was was leaving the game as it did with the fact that Stanzi was entering it.

He was the highlight of the game for me

Okay let's try this again
I like Stanzi but Zorn needs to teach him to throw the ball away before taking a sack.
I recall Cassel having the exact same problem his first year with the Chiefs and he overcame it.
I think Stanzi could definitely have a bright future with the Chiefs.

You can add....
When Stanzi is 1 yard away from a first down on a 4th and 1, and the nearest defender is a half a mile away…instead of passing to a covered player, run the 3 feet to get a first down to the list of ‘coaching oppertunities’ as well.
Very Much Agreed
I was yelling at the TV trying to get him across the line. Man, it is the first pre-season game and I am yelling….can’t wait to fly down for the home opener!!!
Throw it away, Ricky !!

Good mobile quarterback, but I think he will struggle at reading defenses and fake coverages.

Stanzi was a perfect pick for the Chiefs
1. He has experience in a pro offense. The Chiefs don’t have to teach the guy to take a snap under center or show him what a 3step drop should look like.
2. He comes in behind an established, hard working qb in Cassel, who will teach him to be a pro. It’s not exactly Rodgers and Favre, but in some ways it’s better because Cassel will actually share his game with Stanzi instead of resenting his presense the way Favre did Rodgers…
3. He also has a great position coach in Zorn, who will help iron out any wrinkles in his game. A qualified, dedicated qb coach should be a great thing for both Cassel and Stanzi.
4. He provided excellent value for the Chiefs after being grade as a 2nd or 3rd rounder and falling to us in the 5th. The Chiefs got three players two rounds later than they graded out (Houston, Stanzi, and Powe) and all three came at positions of need! Along with Baldwin and Hudson, who should both be starters by next year. I don’t know how we didn’t get As from all the draft graders… I guess haters gonna hate.
I really hope that the Chiefs go with two qbs this year. I know many are still pining for a veteran to back up Cassel, but I think that would just stunt Stanzi. Let him get all the practice snaps and the few game snaps that come from being the primary backup, and let him stay right under the wings of Cassel and Zorn. If Cassel were to get hurt and miss multiple weeks, and Stanzi couldn’t hold the fort to Haley’s satisfaction, then bring in a bandaid at that point. Anybody who is available today will likely still be available midseason. And we have the best running game in the NFL and a good defense, which should allow us to protect a young signal caller for a couple of weeks anyway.

and homers gonna home ...

still whining about “no respect from the national media” blah blah … can we give it a rest? please?

I don't give a shit about the national media
I was just pointing out that I think we had an awesome draft and Stanzi is a big part of it.
And I’m not the guy that turned you down for the “Grumpy” roll on the smurf movie because you sound too old, either. So try to find yourself a blog called Arrowhead Shame. Some of us are optimistic about what our team has and does. Cuz your negativity toward Cassel, the Chiefs and the gov’t blah blah… can we give it a rest? please?
"Me and Matt Cassel just fucked you up, dog!"
All right
Re-reading this a couple hours later,I think I may have gotten a little more bitter than was called for… I would particularly like to apologize for the ‘old’ thing as I am totally opposed to age-ism and that sort of thing. Just got a bit miffed at having shit thrown on my attempted parade. Hope I didn’t cause any hard feelings, Ups, as I do respect a lot of your opinions (including some of the ones about our gov’t) and certainly respect your right to have them and express them here…
"Me and Matt Cassel just fucked you up, dog!"
just wondering ...
where was I negative about Cassel? hell, all I said was I’m tired of “homers” and whining about “lack of respect” … sorry I hit a nerve, but every team’s fans think their team is better than it (usually) is
sorry about the rain on your parade … but if Stanzi does get into some games and does play all that well, I’ll sign on to LEAD your parade, ok?
meantime, let’s wait til we have a reason FOR a parade … deal?

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Spot On...........
I watched most of his games at Iowa. At times he made some real poor passes/decisions. But at other times he made absolutely incredible plays, many for game winners. I think he is NFL ready, and smart.
