The Chris Johnson Situation and the Chiefs

We, as Chiefs fans, are lucky to be able to claim Jamaal Charles, arguably the most effective running back in the entire NFL, as one of our beloved Chiefs. He is not only an electrifying talent, but also a hard worker and nice guy. He is a guy you are proud to say plays for your favorite team, and shows all the qualities that Scott Pioli and Todd Haley look for in a player, starting with work ethic, and putting the goal of team success above all else.

After the Jump I'll explain how this relates to the Tennessee Titans star running back Chris Johnson.

Chris Johnson is arguably the best running back currently in the league (not that I agree, but thats another debate).

He has proven he can be a workhorse back despite his small size (he is listen as 8 pounds lighter than Charles at the same height), and has a 2,000 yard season to his name. In both of the other two campaigns besides that one he has rushed for over 1,200 yards and has proven to be the "Elite Homerun Hitter" in the NFL so to speak. There is no doubt he has earned a large contract, and yesterday the Titans stated that they would make him the highest paid player at his position if he reported to camp.

While Charles has never carried the ball more than 250 carries in a single season, in 2010 he managed 103 more yards than Johnson on 86 less carries and more than 220 yards on only one more reception and they both lost 2 fumbles on the season. This is what we mean when we say Charles is the best at what he does in the league. Many of CJ's average is built off of long runs, and while yards are yards, you can't always rely on a big run. During this past season, I would follow the Chiefs' games on NFL.com (I live in LA, so I cant watch unfortunately), and almost every run would be at least 4 yards it seemed with many 8-15 yards bursts. I would argue that he was the most consistent back in the league int that regard

Besides that, Johnson is over a year older, which actually does make a difference when it comes to running backs because of how quickly they can wear down.

Now, back to his contract situation.

The titans will make him the highest paid back soon. This offseason the Panthers gave Deangelo Williams $11 million more than Jamaal even though he is older, injury prone, and less productive. Darren McFadden is working on a 6 yr $60 million contract currently.

I think this shows how the Chiefs and Charles both know they needed each other and Pioli once again showed he is the man.

Just some analysis.
