As horrifying as that thought may be, where do the Chiefs go from here? I know its August and the Kool Aid runneth over in many cups but last we saw Mr. Cassel the Kool Aid had dried up like most of Texas this summer. No need to bore you with the stats, it would be like slowing down to get a closer look at a car accident, but it was horrifying right Chiefs fans?
I like Matt Cassel and have aggravation towards Haley that it took him 3 years to figure out that there is a reason 90+% of the NFL employs a dedicated position coach for the qb. Good job on bringing in Jim Zorn and finally upgrading the wr position. But the fact remains, Cassel looked like, well garbage late last year.
I would like to think the Matty C we see this pre-season and opening day will resemble the one that had 26 tds and 3 ints for a 12 game stretch. But in the back of mind is that we have a qb that is going on his 46th start (62 by years end possibly) that folded big time late kast year. I want a SB winning qb, not a good fantasy qb for 12 weeks. Cassel has the talent, the coaching around him to not only succeed but eliminate any excuses, the time is now, so what if the clock strikes 12 (end of the 2011 season) and we have a pumpkin?
-First up is Ricky Stanzi. Yes his Kool Aid may be delicious this off season, but there is a reason he was drafted in the 5th rd. Pioli drafted Tom Brady later than that right? Yes, he and the Hoodie also drafted Kevin O'Connell, Kliff Kingsbury, and Rohan Davey, all of whom are unemployed by the NFL. Stanzi is an unkown at this point, he would probably get first crack, especially this season, if Matty C doesnt come through.
2nd-FA/Trade, well we have tried this how many times? Allegedly Brady Quinn is having a gret camp in muletown, has ties to Crennel, and like Len Dawson and Trent Green did nothing his 1st 4 years in the league after playing college in the state of Indiana, throw in Montana also played ball in the Hoosier state and call it Karma why the Hooiser state delivers for the Chiefs.
3rd option-The draft, and now not waiting until the 199th pick to find the next Brady but getting over our Todd Blackledge/Mike Elkins/Matt Blundin fear and dipping our toe back in the pool of of drafting a qb in the 1st rd? Heck even 2nd rd? Except for Landry Jones and Andrew Luck I am not aware of who may be available/viable for an early pic next year. As much as I may like Luck or Jones I prefer that were not in position to draft either of them. Of course I prefer due to Matt Cassel's break out season were picking 32nd, but in lieu of that and a possible Matty C meltdown which way do we go?
