Aubrayo Franklin getting dominated by the Chiefs
Wondering why we didn't sign Aubrayo Franklin?
Thanks to a tip from a Chiefs fan last night I went and reviewed the 49ers/Chiefs game from Week 3 last season and found utter carnage.
Just take a look at Franklin getting his butt whipped. Absolute domination by Casey Wiegmann and Ryan Lilja. This guy probably wants big money...no way he is worth it. Ends up on the ground constantly in these clips. Chiefs ran for 200 yards in this game.

Ya know
When his name first came up I re-watched the game and noticed the same thing. The reasons I got back was because he missed all of camp and was out of shape. Weigs was crushing him 1on1
Yeah he does
That’s why I’m not lowering our FA “grade” because of no Harris, Brown etc. B-Rich is young and was 10x better last year.
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
That's the main reason I don't see RT as a huge need
Some technique fixing and he will be acceptable in the pass protection department
Exactly the dude is just lookin for money, he proved it last year by holding out after being tagged.
Still never understood the hype other than ‘he is fat and the best available’

Considering the trouble Weigmann had with other NT types
To see that kind of dominance is surprising.
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
He still could have been out of shape from holding out last year wanting the big contract
A player still shouldn’t be THAT bad when they are moaning about a new contract

It could have been because this was an earlier game in the year
And Weigmann hadn’tbeen worn down yet
It is what it is and we are who we are.
Sober (again) since January 10th, 2011.

Makes me think...
it would be a good idea to start Weigman the first half of the season and maybe plug Hudson into the starter role after the bye week.
I'm perfectly satisified with the Kelly Gregg signing
Even before seeing this.
Top 10 defense and another trip to the playoffs!

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
I'm with ArrowSpread
Not to say that Gregg is our NT of the future by any means, but he shores up the position and will be a great guy for Powe to learn from. As we’ve seen, Pioli has a great eye for talent, and I gotta say, if this deaft class is anywhere as good as our last one, I’ll almost at the point where he could draft a kicker in the first round and I’d be like “alright, I’m right with you.” The names never seem to be big, but with the exception of Chambers and Sheffield (and the majority of the ‘08 draft, which sucked for most teams), ever FA/draft choice has contributed, and we havent broken the bank for any of them. That’s how you build a winner.

Pioli whiffed on Mike Goff, though.
You never know if the old stalwart is still stalwart until opening day.
would of ≠ would've
In other words, I wouldn't mind seeing them hedge, a little.
This is not ‘09 and ’10, when they could only do so much at so many positions, all at once. Now they have one older, proven vet at NT and a bunch of unprovens. I see some significant body sculpting going on in some of previous years’ ‘tweeners (guys who weren’t quick enough to play at the light end). Dion Gales could be this year’s Derek Lokey, with one more shot at the brass ring at the greater weight. Gilberry’s in this category, too, imo. So is Bobby Greenwood, although I think he was already a lot closer to 300 than last year’s online rosters indicated. Gales was prob’ly bigger than advertised, last year, if my eye is any guide.
I know Greenwood was getting schooled by T-Jax in at least one practice, already, but what little I saw from him as a defender suggested he was big and agile enough to be a solid RT. Be cool if he makes the transition.
Blah blah blah. I hope and at least halfway expect Pioli ain’t done signing NTs.

I recall some really smart guy saying Gregg is the 2nd best on the market
Who WAS that guy? :)

Really? I hadn't heard that
Either way, as soon as I heard they cut him I wanted him (even if we got Franklin too). Talking to BAL fans has only reinforced this for me.
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
Pioli never said it.. was just basing that off the fact thats who we signed to be our NT haha
I agree, as soon as he was on the market he was my #1 target(not in the Franklin fan club)

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Nah, we've been clamoring for "the answer" at NT
And I still don’t really think Franklin is it.
And Gregg will be a much shorter contract than Franklin would want, until we can find that answer.
But that won’t stop you from posting that same comment everytime someone mentions Gregg for the next few days, I guess.
The Chiefs and I have mutually agreed on this decision and although I look forward to continuing my career, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Kansas City.
A NTofF is what we've been clamoring for
Powe is the potential there. Gregg is the stopgap, and a damn good one, imo. And, from the sounds it, he will fill the leadership void that Vrabel once filled on a defense that, to this point, hadn’t displayed much of.
Top 10 defense and another trip to the playoffs!

so I guess Franklin never made a play all game, or all last year, huh

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
All game against us? No, not really
Did ANYONE on their defense?

Looks like some good blocking. Enjoy seeing the double blocks.
kc humiliates a lot of teams running the ball.

My take is Casey stil gots it!
Winning begins with Attitude - Haley and Pioli will be winners in KC!
I'll forever be a Chiefs fan! Only God himself could take that away from me, but when I get to my great reward, I'll rejoin two bigger fans, my Mom and Dad.
they all "had it" vs Niners ... but "lost it" vs Chargers (game 2), Raiders (game 2) and Ravens

This is a testament to Weigs too...
It shows what technique and leverage can do. I see him at a gym in KC every once in awhile and he doesn’t have that “holy shit, must be an NFL player” look to him. But he is solid, lean (for an OL) and looks athletic. Put 10+ years experience and a mean streak on him and you see the results. The guy his is blocking is younger, probably stronger (off the field), taller, and has longer arms…basically everything coaches look for in a DL.
Casey still dominates his ass cause he plays with leverage, technique and a mean-streak.
On a side note, Lilja and him on a double team is a deadly combo. They are both “undersized” but play so low and sound that they tear guys with poor technique apart.
"A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week."
Good to see you around
and I agree about Weigs and Lilja – in all of those gifs, any time Franklin gets too high, one or both of them just toss him to the ground.
Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl
Yeah, bigbe. I like your DL line of BS.
You pointed out some things about Dorsey’s technique that were fairly instructive to me.
You KNOW that Wiegs has shorter arms than Franklin, but he just slaps Franklin’s arms aside.
would of ≠ would've
Hand Fighting
Yes I forgot to mention how good Wiegs hands are.
You can see how Franklin makes first contact and Wiegs just slaps them away and has inside control immediately which renders Franklin’s sixe and strength useless.
That is a horrible habit for a DL to have. Lazy hands in the NFL is a death certificate. You have to be violent with your hands from snap to whistle. If your hands are swiped away you must REPLACE, Franklin doesn’t even attempt, gives Wiegs his chest and is quickly subdued.
"A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week."
I like your quote, bigbe.
But I’d say that history teaches that the best planners do the best job of collecting intel, so they KNOW what they’re up against. “Look before you leap” is the flip side of that.
But I agree with the hand-fighting deal. Some talk of having a martial artist come and instruct our linemen, but it really seemed to show up on the field on O- AND D-Line.
would of ≠ would've
There was a ju jitsu instructor brought in last year as a consultant
He worked with the DL and rush linebackers (OLBs) from what I was told. But he could have worked with OL as well.
"A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week."
I like Kelly Gregg
Been good every year for the last decade or so, including last year.
Whereas Franklin was lights out exactly one year. Then he got tagged and was half the player in ’10 that he was in ’09.
Anyone wanna guess how he’d do after getting paid?
Hey, if we still go after him, great. But Gregg is a decent option for a year at NT and a much better guy to help Powe (who I believe is Pioli’s plan for next year and beyond) learn the game.
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.
Like I said last night, I'm more in favor of Franklin, now that Gregg's been signed.
I was pretty nervous about putting all our eggs into the Aubrayo basket.
would of ≠ would've
Man, I need to watch more tape on Franklin
I’d heard he was prone to getting a little lazy and staying too tall and not getting low enough to get some leverage.
But he’s standing straight up at the point of attack on every one of those clips.
I know they’re handpicked “lol @ franklin!” clips and all. But still, the technique there is kind of shoddy. Maybe MN’s comment about him still being out of shape after the holdout is true? He can’t have had the year he had in 2009 with technique like that, can he?
The Chiefs and I have mutually agreed on this decision and although I look forward to continuing my career, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Kansas City.
The guy held out almost all of training camp, was out of shape because of it and if I'm remembering right we were his second game back.
I highly doubt Pioli only turned on our tape against Frankling and said “No thanks”. He’s a little more thorough then that.
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."
I love watching Casey Weigmann play
his technique is so badass

The fifth one is great!
A perfect example of how you absolutely must move the nose tackle to have success with inside runs.
Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl
The last clip...
If 25 follows his lead blocker that is a huge play. Not sure why he bounced that one outside but who am I to question anything JC does?
It's great to finally trust the men making the important decisions at 1 Arrowhead Drive.
I'd say it's more about...
…his price tag and work ethic than how he played against us last year. On some of these plays, he’s eating up multiple blockers, which is his job as NT. Remember, we were a great running team last year becasue EVERYONE blocked well, not just the interior line. That being said, I think the unrivaled experience Kelly Gregg has will be invaluable to Powe.

I love how in the very bottom one
Wiegs stands Franklin up, fights him to a draw
Lilja steps in and flattens Franklin then hauls ass downfield to hit someone on the second level. That’s actually pretty fun to watch.
The Chiefs and I have mutually agreed on this decision and although I look forward to continuing my career, I’ll always have a special place in my heart for Kansas City.
Great Post BFET!!
Do you think you could do the same with Mr. Kelly Gregg vs Weigman/Lilja in our playoff game?
