OT Jammal Brown Says Chiefs Were Interested In Him
There's some unrest from a segment of the Kansas City Chiefs fan base that feels the Chiefs aren't being very active in free agency by failing to address some needs. Let me say that I feel your pain. This is arguably the most exciting time of year in football and there's just not a lot of action from One Arrowhead Drive relative to other teams, like the Philadelphia Eagles.
I'd also remind you that there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes in free agency that we don't know about. For example, the Chiefs tried to sign LB Scott Shanle from the New Orleans Saints but lost out. They made up for it by reportedly signing LB Brandon Siler from the San Diego Chargers this weekend.
Then there's this nugget -- KC tried to sign OT Jammal Brown, former Saints and current Washington Redskins offensive tackle. This comes Rich Campbell of the Washington Times who just spoke with Brown.
He ultimately decided on a five-year deal with the Redskins but tells Campbell that he chose Washington over the Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears and...Chiefs.
What this tells us is that the Chiefs are willing to search for an upgrade at Barry Richardson's spot at right tackle. We'll see if they actually make a move there but Brown's comments suggest that it's at least on their radar.
It's probably time to check out what's out there on the offensive tackle market.

This is suprising to me.
I thought that since they didn’t draft a tackle that they thought they were set at the position. This changes everything.

Brown would have been a major upgrade. He seemed to get back to full speed last year, and I was hoping we could sign him to a more team friendly deal, considering the injury concerns. But I guess what Dan Snyder wants, Dan Snyder gets…

So we lose out on Shanle and get Siler
now do we lose out on Brown and get Harris or Kaczur? I like Siler over Shanle for age and talent reasons and I would like Harris or Kaczur too (assuming they are healthy).
Well this was last year that the Chiefs went after Brown.
But maybe.

Sounds alright
I mean Albert is a solid LT but could be the next Shields imo. Richardsons good at run blocking but not good enough to make up for poor pass blocking even against a teams 2nd best pass rusher. As much as we joke about Albert if he moved to LG his run blocking would be a huge asset specially against big dlines. And his biggest pass blocking issue is speedy rushers not slower strong ones. So if you put him up against Large DEs or DTs depending on other teams Dfense he would have a lot better pass blocking.

So you don't think that Albert and Richardson can improve?
They are both very young and very unlikely they have hit their ceilings yet. Bringing in competition for them is expected, but unless Jake Long or Joe Thomas fell into our laps, I wouldn’t expect any player to be brought in to replace either of them. Nor will either of them be moved to a different position.

So what are you doing with Asamoah/Lilja in the meantime?
Albert is an OT. There doesn’t appear to be any indication that the Chiefs will ever move him to G (or any of his other “natural” positions). This indicates the Chiefs want to upgrade the OT position in general. At most, the signing of Jamaal Brown would’ve moved Albert to RT and Richardson to the depth chart.
I think we all need to accept the fact that Albert is going to be an OT as long as he is a Chief.

If we wanted to pass more. Asamoah played a few games he didn’t start as good as I think he will be he hasn’t proven anything to ME yet idk about Haley. Lilja is good but undersized and maybe trading him after his great year would be a good thing. I’m just saying our pass protection is sketchy and we just spent a lot of money and a pick on WRs so yeah

That Pioli wasn’t willing to overpay for a 30+ year old RT. You have to think that if the salary was equal Brown was heading back to Washington.

Ryan Harris
Sean Locklear
Charlie Johnson

Team Pioli/Haley. Decade of the Chiefs.
Team Colquitt
i thought
there was still a floor, just like in previous years, and you had to hit it before the end of the year.
they were discussing it on sirius earlier, and said that teams can even put in bogus qualifiers in a reworked contract to hit the floor knowing full well the person wouldn’t hit the qualifiers that year.
then in 2013 it’s the new 99% of cash cap, only that’s not per team, that’s overall. or something, i didn’t really follow how the new floor is gonna work.
Im lost? Why would this come as a suprise?
Its Jammal Brown, the guy is good! Why would he not be on our radar if we got the money and need to upgrade if possible. Worst case scenario we have to cut someone and instantly we add an upgrade and depth that we dont really have I mean if Alberts goes down who steps in?

Not for nothing but I've made about 50 similar comments to the one below here
explaining why they’re looking to replace Richardson. Everyone thought I was crazy of course. I tried to warn you guys that this is coming: Here’s one of about 50.
I’m not making a big deal out of it at all….I’m just saying that we can have that fire in the belly, and the respect for authority, and it’s easily and readily available, right now, for the same money, and I’m saying that the fans underestimate how seriously both Pioli and Haley have viewed the incident, and I’m saying that I belive, that Pioli and Haley both, still….do not consider it water under the bridge. They’re patient in their revenge tactics, as we have seen with Pollard, and with Page, and the repurcussions, I believe, are yet to come.
Time will tell if my analysis of the Pioli plan for Richardson comes to fruition, but a visual trip and look around in the mind of Pioli, tells me, he can’t forget this, and doesn’t want a physical reminder of his lack of action in regard to the matter, staring him in the face, on a daily basis.
For Pioli, it’s about keeping his mind free of needless clutter, and moving on, to less risky ground.
Moving Richardson, means he can forget about it, and I gotta beleive that deep down, he wants him punished for his defiance, otherwise, he’s saying to the entire fan base and the entire squad, that you can act that way, and still be considered, one of the right 53. And that’s gonna grate on him, until he makes the ultimate statement, and let’s Richardson go.
That’s the mindset of a GM, and a HC, and rightfully so.
There are some things in life, you just can’t do.

bill maas came on the radio this week....
(This was before the Kelly Gregg signing!!).
He was asked what’s the greatest need right now for this team was. If you had one position to add to what would it be….
He said OL. Big guys upfront. I still think we will get another OL. And hope we do
Here's a 2nd one. And no I'm not going to post all 50.
Because of the incident on national tv last year when Richardson flew into a rage on the sideline yelling at Haley and chest bumping the assistant coach. Outrageous behavior. He just plain lost it. At the time, I remember thinking, man, I hope they dump his ass, I don’t care how good he is. Maybe I’m old school, but I just don’t believe in defying the authority of the head coach, espescially in a way that physically intimidated the much smaller assistant coach. He was physically threatening a coach with bodily harm, and there’s no other way to see it, except clearly unacceptable. Just my opinion. Others will say, heat of the moment, a competitive spirit, bla bla bla….I just see it as loose cannon, and a potential cancer on the o-line, and he’s not so damn special that he’s earned any kind of right to conduct himself that way. He’s easily replaced with equal or better talent, and imo that’s what needs to happen, so guys will think twice about sideline temper tantrums that seek to upstage and undermine our coaching decisions at the precise moments in critical game situations when cool heads must prevail to make the proper decisions. I want him gone, and that’s that.
"A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore." ~Yogi Berra
And because I can.
And maybe just to stir up the hornet’s nest of Richardson lovers just a wee bit.
"A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore." ~Yogi Berra
What'dya say guys, should I post all 50? Okay Okay...just one more and I'll stop.
I’m not saying O’Cal is going to start over Richardson. I think they think that David Mims may be able to step right in or someone as yet unsigned. Clearly if
they were happy with Richardson, their very first order of business would not have been to bring in the 6-8 335 pound Mims.
"A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore." ~Yogi Berra
Some people ya just can't convince until the fat lady sings.
And then ya can’t find em to say I told ya so. lol.
"A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore." ~Yogi Berra
WHEN Richardson is replaced it will be because of one of the following:
-he goes to 2nd string because a more talented player replaces him after competition
-he is traded for something/someone else because someone better has replaced him
-he is released at the end of his contract because someone better has replaced him
-he enters free agency and we are outbid for his services
-he moves to LT because he is so awesome and it will allow us to move Albert to LG, his natural position
-he retires to start the HOF clock while Haley writes his induction speech that includes a humorous recollection of a sideline incident many years ago involving BRich that served as the original indication to Haley that this player was going to be great
CHIEFS DYNASTY – we’re kind of a big deal
Okey dokey. But you left one out.
-Because Pioli couldn’t forget his disrespect for the coaching staff in a critical situation, identified it as a serious character flaw and a weakness, and decided to use him to set an example by bringing in an ample or better replacement during training camp and then dumping him.
(The only reason that there is evidence for as of this moment)
Exhibit A) The signing of Mims
Exhibit B) Pursuing Jamaal Brown.
"A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore." ~Yogi Berra
other evidence
1)drafted Baldwin because Bowe sucks and needs to be dumped
2)drafted Hudson because Weigmann sucks and needs to be dumped
3)drafted Houston because Vrabel stole beer
4)drafted Bailey because TJax sucks
5)drafted Brown because Flowers needs to be dumped
6)drafted Stanzi because Cassel yelled at Haley a couple of times
7)drafted Miller because DJ sucks
8)drafted Powe because Shaun Smith squeezed balls
9)drafted Bannon because, well who knows.
CHIEFS DYNASTY – we’re kind of a big deal
What you don't get kabrink, is that I don't form my own opinions of the players
Their actions and play on the field form it for me. I was the most ardent supporter of Richardson’s before the incident last year. He changed my mind on being one of the right 53 that day.
Here’s one of many many of my comments in support of Richardson.
I hope O’Cal is out and Richardson starts. They should have had Richardson on first team from the beginning.
I firmly believe that any man’s finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle…………victorious. ~Vince Lombardi

"A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore." ~Yogi Berra
what you don't get is that incident
while shocking is really, really irrelevant to Haley. Haley said at the time, it would be handled internally and it was. This incident had physical contact so it puts it above simply yelling but it was still just a competitive reaction. As to other temper incidents, as I alluded to in my list above, Cassel has yelled at Haley several times. Haley doesn’t care. His coaches have yelled back at him. He doesn’t care.
CHIEFS DYNASTY – we’re kind of a big deal
That's exactly where we disagree. You believe that a GM like
Pioli and a Head Coach like Haley, can just dismiss disrespect for authority issues in players and still call them one of the right 53, just because they don’t elaborate on incidents when they occur.
I believe your wrong about that, and that their memories are very long when these incidents occur, and that depending upon the severity, could result in an eventual personnel change at the position and for the player in question.
I believe neither Pioli or Haley, can forget what happened, have identified it as a potential risk in game situations, and would prefer to eliminate it….because they can, so why not.
It’s not like there’s no one better out there they can bring in and pay the same money to, and who also has a health respect for coaches and authority.
Just my opinion. They do care. They’re paid to care. If they didn’t…the words….The Right 53, would have never been uttered in Kansas City.
But I respect your opinion, that Pioli and Haley would allow, and ignore, physical and verbal abuse of the coaching staff from out of control players and that they don’t care about it at all as you say.
I just steadfastly disagree with that opinion.
And I can’t believe your’re comparing Cassel yelling at Haley to what Richardson did. That’s really laughable.
"A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore." ~Yogi Berra
I never said the incident was ignored.
Coach told us they would deal with it in house. I assume BRich took whatever punish was administered whether it was a tongue lashing, being beat with a bagful of oranges, waterboarding, having binder clips put on his nipples, or being shot with pennies by the entire team. The team is satisfied that he was told what he did was wrong and not to be tolerated, that he was punished, and that he understands.
Obviously, now they will wait to see if the guy demonstrates that he learned from it or whether he proves to be a habitual problem.

If the Chiefs are really serious about upgrading our RT position, they'll pursue
Starks. Just realeased by the Steelers. 6’8 345, started last 50 games for them.
Time to get rid of bad character and bring in a professional at RT.
"A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore." ~Yogi Berra
That "345" line is apparently a little out of date.
Word on the street is the Steelers cut him because he was pushing 400 lbs. Maybe at nose tackle?
"[Jamaal Charles] probably fights crime in his spare time while inhaling carbon emissions, exhaling oxygen, and crapping oil. That’s how awesome he is. Not just good for the Chiefs, but America."

I read that. That could Nix it. But it does appear that the Steelers
players love this guy and wanted him to stay. But I’d admit that 400 is too heavy even at 6’8" tall.
In this heat, he can shave off 30 lbs pretty quick though, and continue to drop some more as the pre-season progresses. I’d still sign him.

And it's too bad Pioli and Haley aren't AP members, then there would be 3 of us.
Well, 4, including Joel Thorman. Math isn’t your strong suit isn’t horse rider?

The point were at with this team is
There are no real NEEDS. Every position we bring in is for competition, depth, or maybe even slight improvement. There’s no team in the NFL now or ever that has been solid at every single position. There’s always going to be weaknesses so every incremental improvement helps.
Oh... I wish that were true....we still have a lot to prove
IMO we haven’t done crap. We couldn’t even beat the Raiders at home. The guys we have on roster are good players, but we haven’t seen enough to say that they are going to be great just yet.
Which would lead me to say that everyone is replaceable until they prove otherwise. Even Flowers wasen’t his shut down self last year.

I'd argue that Flowers was at his best ever till he got hurt
And I didn’t say we were great at any position but we have no glaring needs like a year or 2 ago when there were needs everywhere. Coaches are in place, there is young talent mostly everywhere. We lost to the Raiders because of a couple BS plays. We lost to the Colts because of one BS play.
In 2008-2009 the Chiefs where LUCKY if they could beat themselves.
In 2010 the Chiefs beat most of the teams they ‘should’ beat, sneaked out a win or two against teams they ‘should not’ have beat, and played competitively against everyone else.
