Le'ron McClain & Free A questions

The Raven's have just signed the Texans' Vonta Leach to a nice contract meaning there probably isn't room for Le'ron McClain. This signing makes me curious. The Chiefs and Giants have been linked to McClain since the Free Agent frenzy began. However, since then McClain news has become very quiet and now with Baltimore shoring up his position with another FB, you have to wonder, why?

I'm not sure whats going on behind the scenes. I've been adamant that the Chiefs need to bring in McClain because he presents a younger, stronger, more versatile skill set than that of Mike Cox (who we've since resigned), and could take the leagues' #1 rushing attack to new heights. Between Steve Breaston and Aubrayo Franklin, Le'ron McClain has been my biggest hopeful for the Chiefs this offseason. It would appear though, that there may be some underlying issues as Baltimore is clearly cutting ties and looking to let him go.

Speculate as needed. Whats the deal and why would the Ravens sign Leach when they had McClain (who wanted to return to them)? And is this the reason rumors surrounding the Chiefs and McClain have become oddly silent? Will the Chiefs sign anymore FA's (Ty Warren anyone?), or do you think we're done and this is our team?

Give me your thoughts and opinions. GO CHIEFS

There are plenty of FA left on the market right now

Then there will be camp cuts, etc. So yes I believe we will see more players brought in

As for the Ravens and McClain, it could have just came down to money between the two sides

Very true

and Leach is an upgrade to the spot for them. I’m not sure how much top tier FB salaries command, but 3 years 11 million seems more than adequate for a talent like Leach.

Definitely interested in seeing who gets cut from where.

Beginning to look like maybe there's an issue with McClain?

Maybe I just think more highly of him than I should.

This doesn’t look like a money cut. It looks like Baltimore wanted something BETTER and were willing to pay for it.

by hmills110 on Aug 1, 2011 7:17 AM CDT up reply actions

That depends on what you mean by "pay for it."

The Ravens obviously value having a quality fullback and were willing to spend money for it. But McClain clearly wants to be paid, not just in cash, but in carries. And I think that’s where the Ravens weren’t willing to meet McClain’s “price.”

Dinner and a movie

I think we were all naive Friday night to think they were going to sign Franklin, McClain or whoever without sitting down and talking to them face to face. Haley knew Breaston well, so that signing was easier. I get the feeling Pioli and Haley want more than stats before they sign players. That may take some time, as busy as they have been.

I was just looking at that

Vontae Leach is considered a better Full Back than McClain.
Clearly an upgrade for Baltimore
McClain would be an upgrade for the Chiefs.

28 teams use Fullbacks, the Chiefs use two

by Steve_Chiefs on Jul 31, 2011 2:34 PM CDT reply actions

Leach isn't necesarily a better full back.

They wanted a great lead blocker who wouldnt want more carries like McClain did. That’s the only reason they went away with him. If you’re speaking in general terms, outside of specific circumstances, McClain is far and away a better all around FB then Leach is.

"Success is never ending, failure is never final."

by GenericBrand on Jul 31, 2011 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Stats don't tell the whole story.

Baltimore didn’t use McClains talents to their potential. McClain is a far better pass catcher and runner then Leach is. Leach is a one trick pony. He blocks and he’s inefficient in carrying the ball and receiving.

"Success is never ending, failure is never final."

by GenericBrand on Jul 31, 2011 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions

McClain reminds me of TRich in his prime....

A deadly lead blocker plus good enough as a RB to be a Featured Back in a single back set as he was for a while.

McClain's better at catching the ball than Richardson was at the same point.

But what GB’s saying makes sense. Considering how I did NOT want to see McClain running the ball, I was surprised at how I got my wish.

Interesting you say that

I mean we have JC, TJ, and DMC (supposedly) in the backfield, would talks have broken down due to McClain’s desire to have more carries? And personally, if it helps keep TJ fresh and paves the way for JC to net more yards, why wouldn’t the Chiefs want to sign him?

McClain seems to have a better skill set than Leach, and is far and away a better player than Cox, I’m struggling to see how this move would hurt the Chiefs.

it would only hurt

if McClain developed an attitude of needing more carries after he was here. But, in my mind, you just need him to hang on for this year. Next year, Jones is gone and LeRon picks up his work load.

Long time follower first time poster

I know we all have our own opinions so i figured I would throw mine out there. I think with the money we have left lets shore up our soon to be free agents. Re-sign Flowers, Carr, Bowe and Hali. We have a good thing going and those players are young and on the rise still. Shore them up with the money we have and we should be set for years to come. Anyone else agree?

by Chiefs Nation 24 on Jul 31, 2011 2:56 PM CDT reply actions

Agree, except we got the money to do a couple of new guys and all of the Vets we want to Re-sign

If you think it will cost 8-10 million each per year to re-sign Flowers and Carr then we probably won’t

by Steve_Chiefs on Jul 31, 2011 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Well,

Hali, and Carr aren’t in camp, does anyone know why? pay our guys and continue the great team chemistry we have built. Another thing to think about, if we sign Bowe long term, we have Baldwin for 4 years, Breaston for 5 years and Bowe for atleast 4 years. Our receiving core is set for years to go along with KC’s new contract. Dominant O for years!

by Steve_Chiefs on Jul 31, 2011 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes we can agree and thanks for posting! Opinions are always welcome here

I think we can expect them to resign (or at least make a serious effort to resign) each one of those with the exception of Bowe.

Not a popular view around here, but personally I have little to no faith in Bowe. Feel like I’m holding my breath every time they throw him the ball because chances are he’s going to drop it.

Maybe that’ll change. Haley has seemed to have had a very positive effect on Bowe, and with the latest additions to our Offense, Bowe has the chance to truly shine. Until then, I’ll still be holding my breath on every pass. Or at least until the Chiefs sign Larry Fitzgerald =)

Agreed and I don't think the DJ fear is unwarranted

Crennel has a knack for getting the most out of his players though so I’m less concerned there. However, I think DeMario is still a capable player and would fit right in if DJ regresses. Still hoping they find a suitable backup/competition for Belcher.

McClain wants more carries. And since he is both a good runner and blocker.....

"At one point in your life you either have the thing you want or the reasons why you don't "

by chief Stevie_k on Jul 31, 2011 3:23 PM CDT reply actions

That is a real possibility

Limiting Jones’ carries though would help keep him fresh going into the Nov-Dec months and McClain is a stone-cold-stunning blocker that could pave the way for JC, TJ, and DMC.

McClain is a FB and they typically don’t see a lot of action with the ball. But he can receive out of the backfield, block, and pound the rock on 3rd and short and goaline situations, an area where Tj struggled last season. Hard to pass on a guy that can provide the tools he possesses.

Tulloch is a better player and they got him for less then that.

ILB

Lofa Tatupu just released. He would look great in a Chiefs uniform.

by warslug on Jul 31, 2011 4:16 PM CDT reply actions

Id like to see mcclain, maybe a manny lawson if its cheap...but mostly mcclain

I think our pass offense is awesome.

our run offense is awesome

but if you add mcclain, our offense becomes very very physical, and we can get that third and one in the playoffs. He would help in so many ways as more than just a FB

I'd like to see Lawson or Roth on defense.

I just don’t see Studie as a very good option. It’s funny to me how many people want Studie to get the nod and how many are down on Belcher when Belcher is so much further along at ILB then Studie is OLB.

Im with you on that one. so far im more impressed with studie on ST than anything else, the effort stuff...but not sure hes ready to full time start

and belcher, people are ready to replace him! this guy was a DE in maine! I mean cmon! Hes getting better, and hes a thumper. Hes like our Brian Cox, or Brandon Spikes. Im happy with his progress, and dont want him gone

I’d love to have Lawson even if he didn’t put up big sack #s in San Fran

Well you can't pick both, I said which would help MORE aka one or the other

IIRC Lawson was there with Nolan.. he knows his stuff, so its not like he has had no coaching at all.

That's the thing.

Studie is a liability in run defense and setting the corner which is a SOLB #1 priority, he’s a decent pass rusher which is their #2 priority and he’s a liability in pass defense(but what about his 2 Ints against Pit? That was one game).

"Success is never ending, failure is never final."

by GenericBrand on Jul 31, 2011 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

Lawson may have not gotten the #s but he is better against the run, better dropping back, and did have his fair share of pressures

And I think just more physical in general.

Studie isn’t that physical stalwart on the corner who goes sniffing for contact. He’s a great special teamer and he’s good in sub packages(although he’ll probably eventually lose these responsibilities to houston).

Depends on who gets pushed out of the OLB mix and whether they can fulfill the SILB job description.

Which is why I’m with you on Studie at SILB as a definite possibility. Studie might just be relegated to backup status.

would of ≠ would've

Lawson started 16 games, Studie had very limited time on the field

They had the same amount of sacks and Lawson had only 20 more tackles. What makes you think that in a starting role Studie couldn’t outperform lawson?

I wasn't sure who he was..

So I did a quick google search… This was before I saw it on AP. (I don’t always trust what I see on twitter) and the Wiki Page already said he was a Chief…

I believe the NFL Lockout will effect my view of the NFL for the next 10 years. If the Chiefs win a Super Bowl earlier than that all will be well in my opinion.

I really like DJ

if he could work with Haley some, like Bowe did, DJ will have 7 picks this season! He dropped so many last year. Also yah yah I know if a LB could catch he would be a TE.
