The Chiefs do not need to make a splash at Nose Tackle
Those watching Josh Looney Friday night heard him remark that Ron Edwards played 15-20 snaps per game. That's roughly 1/4 of all defensive plays. Glenn Dorsey, among others, too the remaining snaps when the team was aligned in pass defense fronts. The Chiefs may want to spend some time this pre-season developing Jerrel Powe, Anthony Toribio, Dion Gales, and Lucas Patterson for those few plays. Dion Gales has been working with the staff for 2 years - it's a make-or-break pre-season. Hopes are high among fans that Powe pans out. If it doesn't look to be working that one of these guys can step up, then maybe the Chiefs sign Gabe Watson, Ron Fields or some other veteran (or, maybe they sign Aubrayo Franklin tomorrow and we just ignore everything I've said to this point).

Good points
I never expected Pioli to break the bank on a guy like Franklin, who I think is a little overrated. Le’Ron McClain also seemed unlikely. More likely would be a guy like Pat Williams.
Our rush defense was horrible. Franklin kills against the run.
And you neglect to at least entertain equating edwards’ snaps per game to his talent level. He was serviceable if not more, but he should only be a back up at NT. DT is a better position.
Scott Pioli for President in 2012. Experience? If the current President doesn't need it, why does Pioli? Besides, Pioli has the blue collar work ethic with a white collar brain. He has humility. He is tough on security. He supports war on Sundays. And he makes sound, fiscally conservative decisions.

The 49ers, on the other hand, were 6th ranked.
But only 15 fewer yards per game. Is Aubrayo Franklin worth 15 yards per game?
That was when we had Edwards though...
At least the coaching staff was comfortable enough with him starting NT. Who knows how bad we may regress now.

And....
Kc gave up almost 220 more yards on…..here’s the biggie….almost 40 LESS carries against.
Also….kc 4.3 yards/ attempt vs 49ers 3.5 yards/ attempt. Almost a whole yard difference. In a game of inches, that’s a big difference.

And don't forget
49ers had to play against best RB in the NFL. Chiefs didnt

All a matter of perspective....
Kc was the 11th least ran-against team, so total yards and TDs lower.
However…..Gave up an average of 4.3 yards per rush. You think that is okay. And that was with Edwards and Smith.
4.3 yards/r att is 0.5 yards less than worst team (buffalo), and 1.3 yards/ r att mire than best team (steelers @ 3.0 yrds/ r att).
That leaves 3rd and 1 1/2 yards to go. No thanks.

And you didn't address the # of snaps possibly being a matter of talent or ability....

Developing players is great
But you still need someone in there to mentor the younger players. Franklin would provide that. I don’t really like the idea of throwing a rookie NT out there with everyone. It’s a tough position to play mentally, physically, and I can’t see Haley doing that. If we sign anyone, my best guess would be Killy.
I think I’ve just come to expect something to happen since we’ve been kinda let down since the whole Breaston signing.
$8 million per year for 5 years is what its going to take
Who really thinks Pioli’s going to do that? That’s 6.7% of the salary cap on one guy that’ll play 1/4 of the defensive snaps. I just don’t see it.
You'd probably have to guarantee the first $20 million
It’s likely Aubrayo Franklin is trying to get 5 years and $40 million, with half guaranteed. That means he’ll get most of the money within the first two years, $36 million of the $40 million total. Are you really wanting to spend $36 million in the first two years and not have him for the remaining 3 years at a paltry additional amount?
To clarify, that's $8 million for each of the first two years ($16 million), plus the remaining guarantee
Maybe by then it’s not $20 million, maybe it’s only $16 million. Regardless, he’s still getting most of it if cut after two years.
So how expensive would you reckon Kelly would be?
Looking at all of the options…

where are you getting your math from?
He would be making Vince Wilfork money. Even Aubrayo Franklin knows that’s ludicrous
BOOM!
Really? He was franchised last season.
He expects this to be his big contract. Which is why he’ll go flaccid after he gets it.
The reason San Francisco isn't paying up is because they know he'll not give the effort needed
once he gets paid.
And you know this how?
Can you provide sources stating this fact about san fran?
Thanks for the inspiration, Bajah!

Not so much a fact as an opinion, gleaned from pundits and blogs
e.g., from NinersNation: “Aubrayo’s best years have come on contract years, and this may indicate dollar signs flashing through his head snap after snap.”
Gave t-jax over $10 MM/ yr (average).
Why not an actual difference maker?

Since when does "comfortable enough" = shiznit
He was capable of handling the duty, but everyone knew we could do better.

No they don't, you are right
On the other hand, if they want a good defense they do.

If you're comfortable with Jerrel Powe and Anthony Toribio manning the middle of our defense
And trying to defend the AFC west division, we are on opposite ends of the spectrum.
We have to stop the run if we are going to win anything important. It doesn’t matter how many plays you want to break it down by, we have a better chance stopping the run with Franklin than we do with Powe/Toribio.
Be sure you put your feet in the right place, then stand firm.

I'd be far from comfortable, but then I'm not the one signing players
My whole point is that the Chiefs can make it work if they don’t sign Franklin. They were middle of the pack with a less than stellar nose last season, they can be middle of the pack with a less than stellar nose this season.
I freely admit to being blinded as a fan (I didn’t like the Brian Waters release one bit), but sometimes taking an alternative perspective is necessary when trying to figure out Pioli and how he intends to manage the team. Rarely do his moves match those of the fans wishes.
