Brad Cottam Released By Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs have released TE Brad Cottam, according to the latest press release. Cottam came to the Chiefs as a third round pick in the 2008 NFL draft.
He suffered a scary looking neck injury in the 2009 season which kept him out for all of 2010. The Chiefs briefly released him prior to the 2010 season only to re-sign him and put him on IR.
With TE Tony Moeaki currently on the PUP list, the Chiefs are a little thin at tight end.
Tight ends available right now are UDFA Charlie Gantt, Jake O'Connell and Cody Slate. GM Scott Pioli always seems to keep a healthy number of tight ends on the roster so I wouldn't be shocked to see someone else picked up.
Assuming he's not re-signed at some point, he ends his Chiefs career with 16 receptions for 183 yards and no touchdowns.

prediction:
Pope is re-signed soon.
Gantt has a decent shot at the roster as a blocker, or Slate as a receiver… especially if I’m wrong about Pope coming back.
I had held out hope he could come back from that injury for the Chiefs.
But it was always a pretty slim hope. Hopefully he’ll catch on somewhere else.

Terrible
Clearly this proves that the 2008 draft was terrible and Carl/Herm were horrible drafters.

I totally agree!!!
Somewhere in their scouting report it should have had a line about how he was prone to neck injuries, when exposed to freak nasty hits… What the hell were they thinking!!
by Stone Throwers on Jul 29, 2011 1:36 PM CDT up reply actions
He never played a full year in college
a different injury every year. He wasn’t considered a great propspect in the draft due to health concerns.
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.
Which is why...
He wasn’t a first round draft pick! Brad Cottam was a freak athlete coming out of college. Plus, knees and ankles are “injury pron” not broken necks.
That hit, and the way he was driven down on the crown of his head was ugly, and freakish, People seem forget that he got back up, and lined up for the next play… WITH A BROKEN NECK!! This guy is a stud and i really wish him the best.

I respect the hell out of the guy
and wish him only the best. But there are some folks around who are going to be pissed about this…when the reality is we released a guy who has never been able to stay on the field.
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.
The guy has basically done nothing in his career, pro or college
The fascination over him has always really puzzled me.
I don't know if you've noticed
Arrowhead Pride sometimes tends to overvalue KC’s talent.

But this was one case that was really overblown.

I'll agree that injuries limited his stats,
But you can’t figure out the fascination with a 6’8", 280 lbs, TE that runs a 4.63 40?

In all fairness
they had to trade away Jared Freaking Allen to get all those draft picks
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.
In all fairness
I think that trade panned out pretty freaking well for us.
"[Jamaal Charles] probably fights crime in his spare time while inhaling carbon emissions, exhaling oxygen, and crapping oil. That’s how awesome he is. Not just good for the Chiefs, but America."
- MNchiefsfan
Agreed
But people never subtract him from the haul we got and it’s much easier to have a great draft when you have like 7 picks in the first 3 rounds.
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.
They got...
Carr in the 5th, Richardson in the 6th, and Gilberry off waivers. And to get that 1st and 2 3rds they had to draft a guy in the 4th a few years back. Peterson fucked up a lot of shit when he was here, but handed the football off well in my opinion.
We ONLY got Branden Albert this little know runningback out of Texas called…ummm…what’s his name…oh yeah, Jamaal Charles
by His Royal Greatness on Jul 29, 2011 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions
Yes we did and I'm glad we made the trade
But losing an all-pro DE does take away from the epicness of that haul.
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.
But
multiple DUIs, Allen never exceeding the sack totals he put up for KC in Minnesota, his poor fit for our current defensive scheme, and the emergence of Tamba Hali all take away from the value of that all-pro DE. Particularly in hindsight.
"[Jamaal Charles] probably fights crime in his spare time while inhaling carbon emissions, exhaling oxygen, and crapping oil. That’s how awesome he is. Not just good for the Chiefs, but America."
- MNchiefsfan
Yup. In hindsight, it all played out well
But we traded away our best player because we didn’t want to pay him. Bottom line. You take Albert and Charles out of that draft and it’s still a good draft. The best Herm ever had by far (for any team) and one of CP’s 2 best. But great it ain’t.
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.
Jared Allen
It gets so old when people try and bend stats to make it sound like he hasn’t been great for Minnesota.
He had 43 sacks in 4 years for us, and has had 40 sacks in 3 years for Minnesota.
I'm not saying he hasn't ben good for Minny - he has.
But the widespread perception of Jared Allen (right or wrong) when we traded him was that the Vikes were trading for an up and coming guy who was only going to get better. A very top tier, likely hall of famer, will very frequently lead the league in sacks, kind of guy. And, while he’s been very very good for the Vikes, he hasn’t absolutely lit the league on fire or electrified that defense. And last year he pretty quietly nabbed 11 sacks.
I guess what I’m (pretty ineffectively) trying to say, if this makes any sense, is that Jared Allen is an elite pass rusher. But he hasn’t been an unstoppable force. You don’t usually see Allen just single handedly take over games. He’s good. He’s really, really good. But I think there was a media perception at the time of the trade that he was even better than he was. There was an expectation that he was only getting started. And he’s never matched the 15.5 sack total that he put up in his last year with the Chiefs.
Too often it seems like Chiefs fans are of the opinion that we traded off the next Derrick Thomas. And Allen was and is nowhere near that same level. Allen was great for the Chiefs, he’s be great for the Vikings. But if I could go back in time and take over for Carl Peterson, I would still make the Allen trade every time.
"[Jamaal Charles] probably fights crime in his spare time while inhaling carbon emissions, exhaling oxygen, and crapping oil. That’s how awesome he is. Not just good for the Chiefs, but America."
- MNchiefsfan
This is exactly what I'm saying:
And he’s never matched the 15.5 sack total that he put up in his last year with the Chiefs.
Yeah, he had 14.5 in back to back years instead. And sorry, but you’re wrong, he is and was an elite pass rusher. And he has been better for the Vikes overall then he was for us. Looking at it any other way is doing so with an agenda up front.
In his 3 years for the Vikes, he has averaged 13.3 sacks. DT averaged 11.5 sacks per season with the Chiefs. Am I trying to say that Jared Allen is better than DT?
No, I’m not, but if you want to go look up how many players have more sacks since he went to Minnesota, go ahead, last time I looked, the answer was ONE, DeMarcus Ware.
All of this isn’t to say it wasn’t a good deal for the Chiefs. You can make a solid argument that it was a good deal. You also have to ask yourself how things would’ve been different if we hadn’t made the trade.
Would we have taken Dorsey with our 1st 1st rounder? Maybe, but many had us taking Albert at #5 and if we didn’t have 2 #1’s, maybe we would’ve gone OL at #5. And if we had taken him, how much better would he have been as a true 4-3 DT? And if we went OL at #5, we probably would’ve gone Clady instead…
Would we have taken Charles earlier if we didn’t have those extra picks? Or more likely would we still have gotten him later? He was the first of our 3 3rd round picks, so it is possible he would’ve fallen to us at our original 3rd round pick, maybe not, but these are fair questions.
Jared Allen was an in his prime, premier pass rusher when we traded him. You can try and say they did it b/c he was a ‘player at risk’ if you want to buy that BS from Peterson (I’d be happy to give you a list of FA players the Chiefs signed under Peterson that make Allen look like a Saint) but in the end, he was a player the Chiefs just didn’t want to spend big time $ on. We were in the middle of a stretch of being one of the cheapest teams in the NFL when this happened, and frankly, have continued to be that way.
I’m hoping this new CBA changes that…only b/c we don’t have a choice but to spend.
In all honesty
anybody can get a bunch of sacks when you attack the QBs blindside. Show me what he does when the QB can see him coming.
I'm trying hard but some of this sabermetrics stuff sounds madeup.
yes
The Herm lovers and Haley haters always forget to subtract Jared Allen from that draft and forget to add Cassel/Vrabel to 2009 draft.

MU tight ends are the best! Cottom would be lucky to be half the player Chase Coffman is. He would also be lucky to land in New Orleans or Jacksonville to have an MU qb throwing to him.

Cody...
I think Cody Slate make the team this year, he has speed and and catch the ball well. more of a big 6’4 230 WR/TE but is a weapon. imo…
Im quessing we keep 3/4 like always and Moeaki, Slate, O’Connell and either Pope or Grant
There's a very good chance Bannon winds up seeing some time

I'm thinking this
he was drafted to be an H-Back, he might see more time as a TE especially if Moeaki is legitimately on the PUP list at the beginning of the season
BOOM!
Wasn't he a 7th round pick?
It’s not a foregone conclusion he’d make the team. If McClain is signed, he’d either be PS, or maybe released…

I feel for Cottam too..
But you have to admit that the Chiefs did a classy thing in letting him go like this. Now he will have enough time to find a team and learn the playbook. Same with Waters.
I dont know if that was there intention in releasing these guys, but the organization could have strung Cottam out to add another body to the depth chart and cut him 2 weeks before the season starts.
