Three Biggest Surprises In Chiefs Free Agency
So what's the biggest surprise for the Kansas City Chiefs so far in free agency? We're starting the fourth day of this pre-free agency period where teams and players can talk but contracts can't be consummated until 5:00 p.m. (Arrowhead Time) tonight and we've seen three big surprises from the Chiefs.
First, the loss of Ron Edwards to the Carolina Panthers. He was the starting nose tackle last year and I strongly expected him back in KC this year. That he won't be back in KC to start at nose tackle in 2011 could cause some issues considering the Chiefs have a couple of unproven guys (NT Anthony Toribio and NT Jerrell Powe) behind him. Does anyone have a clue who will be the starting nose tackle come Week 1? That's why this is a surprise. It seemed like the Chiefs were unprepared for his departure. We'll see. Maybe they had other plans.
Second, the release of Brian Waters. I admit -- I'm probably not thinking rationally when it comes to him because I was a big fan of him on and off the field but his release is still a surprise (even if the reasons for his release weren't unforeseen). Anytime the longest tenured member of a team leaves, it's a surprise.
Third, the loss of Shaun Smith to the Tennessee Titans. There were reports that the Chiefs were working on a deal to try and keep Smith so that's why this is a bit of a bigger surprise. We thought GM Scott Pioli would get it done but it appears the Titans likely offered more money.
Those are your three big surprises so far in Chiefs free agency. Which one is the biggest?

I was more surprised about Edwards than Smith
Smith did pretty well, but I think they were worried about him being a distraction at some point
I'm really surprised at the combined loss of
Edwards and Smith. I could understand losing one of the two, but losing both? I’m surprises Pioli allowed it to happen. DL went from being one of the strongest units on the team, to one with several question marks.

DL is only 3 people and one of them was Edwards, who played hard but definitely wasn't a strength of the team
by Chatch McNasty on Jul 29, 2011 8:38 AM CDT up reply actions
DL is not "just" 3 people, every good 3-4 has a 5-6 man rotation
the DL in the 3-4 are asked to do alot. This loss is a huge deal. You need depth on any DL for the sake of rotation and especially in a 3-4. If anything had we retained those guys we would still needed 2 more guys.

His name is not Ron Edwards. And that’s good enough for me.

This.
And it won’t be Powe, either.

But you and I both know that if they let Smith and Edwards get out of the building, we’re bringing in someone today.

I guess they can use Powe in camp till they sign someone,but...
You would think that it should become a pretty big priority.
Go Chiefs!!!!
Kalo, I'm curious...
I remember you talking about skipping the “yearly” breakdown of T-Jax because you didn’t feel like taking the grief…
Any chance you’ll change your mind to get people who are on the ledge because of Smith leaving to have some hope?
Because the general consensus around here is that Smith vastly outplayed T-Jax. Which just isn’t true.

So I can’t remember which radio show was ragging on Haley as a play caller for a good 10 minutes, but I couldn’t believe it. You’d think he’d never called plays for a high scoring offense in the Super Bowl.

They attack it's because it's stupid.
It’s the equivalent of explaining a joke and then asking people to laugh anyway. Plus, APers came to be so dependent on it for a while that many started taking everything that was said completely seriously if it wasn’t highlighted in gray.
And on top of everything else, the sarcasm font randomly cuts off your sentences if you're not careful.

Edwards
Almost forced to go out and get a NT in free agency. It’s seemed to me this regime has been perfectly happy trotting a servicable Ron Edwards out there and has not expressed an urgency to address the position. So now they just about have to.
Maybe a little surprised at Waters, but it’s obvious this is what both sides have wanted for a while now.
Smith wasn’t a starter, can’t really be surprised by turnover in supporting roles.
No suprises
Figured Edwards would go because I fully believe we have a new NT coming soon and it’s very likely that it’s in fact Franklin. If not there are other veterans that could come in and be a stop gap for at least a year while Powe learns.
Smith would probably be 3rd on the depth chart and probably wanted more money then we were willing to pay for d line depth. Hence T-jax, Dorsey, Bailey, Gilberry, Powe, and maybe a Franklin. I do think we will sign one more dlinemen for depth but it will be someone cheaper then Smith. Maybe a UDFA.
And as far as Waters goes, Jon is going to be a stud and we can’t let that young talent ride the bench. You gotta let those declining vets go to clear up cap space and make room for young talent.
That is the Pioli way.

Smith..........Waters was not a big surprise for me
When Hunt made his first statement about the lockout negotiations he did not give any credit to Waters. It was subtle, but seemed intentional to me.
In Waters Departing statement he thanked everyone involved with the Chiefs and didn’t mention Hunt.
I don’t think this was by coincidence.
It was a mutual statement released and agreed upon by Waters and the Chiefs. Hunt owns the team, Pioli manages the team, and Waters was a long time successful player. I don’t know how you can read this or read that into what was said or what was not said. Sometimes in a divorce, both parties want to move on. Not sure that was the case here, but if someone says the young guard is going to play, and the old guard says, well I don’t want to back-up…maybe because of the service the guy gave the Chiefs for many years, maybe they did the player a favor by releasing him so that he could use all his options. Maybe that was mutual and benefits everyone involved. It was very clear to me Waters has lost a step. Maybe there is mutual respect for everyone involved.
Waters was a surprise
But I’m okay with all of it. I know I’m going to get roasted for this, but I trust Pioli. The man has a pretty good track record.
We're the same team as last year, except incredibly better, and with new players.
We were already a thin rotation even with those guys
I am not sure what Pioli is thinking here with the amount of cash we have. This is Petersen esque.
A good 3-4 usually has six capable guys in the rotation and an emergency guy.
This only means one thing..
The Chiefs WILL bring somone in VERY, VERY, soon. Could be today. Cuz now we have no one to play NT. Im expectying a NT to be signed today.. If not, this was a stupid Pioli move. Which there arent many of.
