All Quiet On The Aubrayo Franklin Front
Rumors and news involving free agent NT Aubrayo Franklin have been very quiet.
Almost oddly quiet.
He's a top 10 free agent and I haven't seen much news on him. One report out of San Francisco stated the team was prepared to lose him in free agency.
But to who? And when?
The Washington Redskins were a team rumored to be interested but they've already picked up a couple of defensive linemen. Can't say I've heard anything else on him.
Check out Peter King's top 50 free agent list. You'll notice we've heard quite a bit about all those guys at the top -- except Franklin.
I'm probably fueling the flames here but it's odd that we haven't heard any reports or rumors out there about him. Someone's good about keeping this information to themselves.

With Fat Albert going to the Patriots thats one team that mighta signed him without a need.

Agreed, and another QUIET team to boot.
But would Washington bid on him now?
"The key to victory is not your strength, but your opponent's weakness." -T.
I actually just put up a fanshot in regard to this.
Is any other 3-4 team in need of a NT like Franklin? I thought maybe Houston, but then again, i know Wade Phillips likes smaller more athletic NTs.
Yeah, Wade Phillips uses as 1-gap, pressure style, NT a la Ratliff.
That’s an easier find, as most 3-tech 4-3 DTs can fill that role. But Franklin is a true 0-tech 2 gapper. An ideal fit for us.
"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win." -Gandhi.
Exactly.
I just can’t think of another team that would want him. If the Jets had cap room they might, but they had to restructure contracts just to make a run at Nnamdi.
*need him
I’m sure a lot of team would WANT him
Denver doesn't run the 3-4 but they need some run stoppers
Just because he is a 3-4 NT does not mean he can not play in the 4-3

And last I checked NT is considered by some as being the most important position in a 3-4 D.

Top 10 because of need
doesn’t mean he’s top 10 overall. Quite honestly, there aren’t a lot of 3-4 defenses that are in dire need of a NT of his ilk right now.

My Theory
From looking at NFL & ESPN is that if the Chiefs are the possible interest they just don’t care. Every time I switch on the TV it’s Eagles, Skins, Jets and occasionally Dallas. As if the league is 4 teams.

Agreed 100%
It’s daaaammmnnn annoying, The only time smaller teams get talked about is when they sign a quarterback. We had a great draft and all they talked about was Ricky Stanzi

When you look at their sites
it opens up a little but still only adds the Pats, Chargers and occasionally the Bengals, serious most of the teams in the league are not being covered by the two biggest sports resources. Thankfully we have SB nation to pick up the slack.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Dumb Question
But, is Franklin really everything everyone is making him out to be? I have to be honest, before this week, I had never head of the guy (maybe that makes me a bad fan?). Is he that good?
Is this a bit like the whole Jerry Rice, err… Wes Welker…. I mean Steve Breaston signing? I like the signing, but I can still see this deal turning out similar to the Jonnie Morton, Bobby Engram, Marc Bradley deals. Am I being too pessimistic? I promise I like Kool-Aid, maybe I am just in a bad mood because it is so freaking hot out and my AC went out!
Franklin is underrated but better than what we had
Breaston fits the team really well for the role he will play and for the coach he is playing for. Coach Haley knows how to use him better than the previous names you’ve mentioned.
Overall, Franklin and Breaston are both considered good/great upgrades to what we already have. Not superstars but they improve the team.
Agreed
I like to put it in simple terms.
Breaston > Any WR not named Bowe (maybe Baldwin)
Franklin >Edwards, Power, Torribo, Smith, etc
If it’s an upgrade, it’s good for the team.
by LTownChiefsFan on Jul 28, 2011 11:46 AM CDT up reply actions
Well it would be true (your worries) if the Chiefs
Didn’t have Jamaal Charles, Dwayne Bowe, Jonathan Baldwin, Tony Moeaki (who had one of the best Rookie TE’ seasons ever) and Dexter McCluster to go along with it.
Think about it did Engram, Morton, and Bradley have the other weapons like Breaston will?
Did any of those guys previously play on a Super Bowl team for the same HC and have 1000 yard season.
Steve Breaston is a great addition.

Secondly, Jonnie Morton was expected to be the answer as a #1 WR
when he was nothing more than a compliment to Herman Moore in Detroit. Bobby Engram was a cheap roster filler at the end of his career. Both guys were in their 30’s when the came to KC. Breaston is just entering his prime and only being asked to be a slot guy, maybe a #2 at most.

All Quiet On The Zombie Apocalypse Front
Rumors and news involving the zombie apocalypse have been very quiet.
Almost oddly quiet.
It’s a top 10 end of the world scenario and I haven’t seen much news on it. One report out of San Francisco stated a team was prepared to loose this scourge upon humanity.
But to who? And when?
The Washington Redskins were a team rumored to be interested but they’ve already picked up a couple of doomsday devices. Can’t say I’ve heard anything else on it.
Check out Al Gore’s top 50 end of the world scenario list. You’ll notice we’ve heard quite a bit about all those guys at the top — except zombies.
I’m probably fueling the flames here but it’s odd that we haven’t heard any reports or rumors out there about it. Someone’s good about keeping this information to themselves.
Sorry Joel, I couldn’t resist. All the rumors surrounding trades leave so much uncertainty that everyone (especially bloggers) has to speculate.

I disagree with the ILB argument
I know that DJ can play any of the roles on the line and people seem to forget his versatility because he has played that spot for two years.
Someone said that DJ can’t shed blockers so he couldn’t play the thumper role.
However, I think DJ excelled at getting off blocks last season, he handles blockers differently then a lot of LB’s… but he beats them consistently to LOS and finds his man. The guy is a beast and can play every position of LB
If we were the Chiefs were too sign Tulloch, Burnett, Cooper, Barnett, Ruud (ughh) or any other backer DJ could flip and not miss a beat IMO.
Rome Crennel is talented enough coordinator to use guys natural talents to his advantage. No matter who we get, they will make it work.
I like both of the San Diego guys for their skill in the 3-4 and their knowledge of San Diegos offensive game plan.

Agreed, though in a pinch DJ could do it...
If the Chiefs sign Franklin, than the ILB play will improve immensely, even if we stick with Belcher. Who I think we improve greatly this season.
That said, I think we should sign Cooper or Burnett. I lean towards Burnett.
Oh and Satch, I don’t not like Stephen Tulloch… I was just making a point that BAMF calls out guys that don’t fit the scheme, but then wants to bring in a guy that would have to switch schemes, and his success in the Crennel 3-4 is pure speculation at this point.
I would love to have Tulloch(no homo), but I think he will end up a Lion.

I agree the Chiefs need a thumber
but more we need a LB that can cover from the inside.
Especially if the Chiefs plan on utilizing Tamba Hali and Justin Houston in the pass rush heavily.
If they don’t get to the QB, the two ILB have to be able to cover those quick passes in the middle. It is an absolute must. That is why I think flipping DJ wouldn’t be so terrible, put a a guy like Nick Barnett out there who can deflect passes, and we would be golden.
Stephen Cooper would be great in that role as well, though I am worried about his age… hence Kevin Burnett. either guy could be huge asset.
Stephen Tulloch is about to enter the prime of his career and would have given us the best ILB duo in the NFL, but he signed with the Lions I heard.
Barrett Ruud had a good year in 2009, but that defense is tailored to him, and I don’t like him in this defense.
The options are limited… Tully Banta Cain might be a good pick up too. I want someone in there, but I agree it needs to be the best fit possible, but who is that?

Do not believe the deal with the Lions is done btw
Until we get better front 3 play, having 2 DJ’s as ILB would mean runs right up the gut for big gains.
Barnett is a no, BUrnett is a possibility IMO

I think we will sign Franklin
It goes both ways, if we don’t have a Nose Tackle, the Chiefs won’t stop the run.
If the Chiefs don’t get an ILB that can blow up the short routes, then it will be passing first downs all day.
They need both… if you get Franklin and (Burnett,Cooper…etc, then we would be set.)

Still had a pretty damn good defense, IF we could improve the rotation that would solve a lot of issues

NT market is deflated
as was mentioned earlier there aren’t a lot of teams that need a 34 NT and, other than us, the couple who do are fiscally hamstrung at the moment. As in any deflated market you delay your purchase as time bids the price down. once its clear there is no real demand for Franklin we can move in and offer him a value contract.
You might have a point.

The Redskins have already taking Cofield from the Giants as well. I doubt they go after Franklin now. I think the Texans may be our main competition.
He is not really a wade Phillips fit
that is my hope anyway
I think we see an Aubrayo Franklin signing before 7 with the Chiefs.
meh...
