Free Agent DE Jason Babin Says Chiefs Showing Interest In Him
Free agent DE Jason Babin was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs for just a couple of months at the tail end of the 2008 season before the new regime allowed him to become a free agent. Ultimately, he left for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009 and following that went to the Tennessee Titans where he made the Pro Bowl last season.
Guess what?
The Chiefs may want him back. This according to Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean, who spoke with Babin. He says the Eaglas, Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills are interested, as are the Chiefs.
He's previously said he's looking for a three or four year deal so we'll see if the Chiefs are willing to pony up that kinda cash. He's not looking for "Julius Peppers money", he told Wyatt, but coming off of a Pro Bowl year he can probably get a sizable chunk of money.
We've been been hearing a few Chiefs free agency rumors but they've yet to agree to terms with another teams' free agent. They have reportedly agreed to terms with four of their own guys (C Casey Wiegmann, WR Terrance Copper, S Jon McGraw and CB Travis Daniels).

Ugh. Pass.
One year wonder and questionable scheme fit. Best of luck to him but let him sign somewhere else.

He has experience playing LB in a 4-3
and DE in a 4-3. Methinks with his motor and the Chiefs success of converting DE’s to OLB’s, I think he’d do great in KC

Or a smoke screen to raise his value with teams he's actually interested in playing for.

Tyson jackson might want to be looking for a new home....
Scott Pioli for President in 2012. Experience? If the current President doesn't need it, why does Pioli? Besides, Pioli has the blue collar work ethic with a white collar brain. He has humility. He is tough on security. He supports war on Sundays. And he makes sound, fiscally conservative decisions.
Nah,
Babin isn’t 3-4 DE material, he’s a serviceable to solid 4-3 DE. If we are looking at him at all, its as a situational rusher to complement Gilberry and Bailey. I just don’t see him taking that sort of role playing position.

CHIEFS DYNASTY – we’re kind of a big deal
No.
He was a LB for Houston’s 3-4 defense, and was an absolute failure. At the age of 31, he isn’t going to lose a few lbs to play that position. Especially since the season is a little more than a month away.
by The Pied Piper on Jul 27, 2011 1:18 PM CDT up reply actions
Lose a couple pounds?
Tamba is 275
He may have to gain 10 if anything.
Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.
He'd have to play OLB
What’s bullshit about this news is Pioli had the chance to lock him up when he inherited Herm’s leftovers. If Pioli had such a great eye for talent he would have locked him up at a reasonable rate rather than paying him after he left and coming off a monster season

In fairness to him every team in the league has passed up this guy at least twice in his career.

He played well when he was here
He played well when he was in Philly. He played well in Tennessee. That consistency is all I need to see from a player. Besides the argument you’re making could be said for any other player to hit free agency

He played well when he was here??
Shuffle, I had season tix in ‘08, when he was here…and he did NOT play well. I don’t remember him doing a single damn thing, in fact.
This is a smokescreen on Babin’s part.
In the words of the internetz, “why u mad @ Pioli?” I’d let him sign with whichever team has coach Washburn and let him speed rush for four downs, too.

Pump the brakes
No GM can be 100% on seeing talent in players. And who is to say Babin didn’t change the way he worked out or studied or changed his approach to the game to make him a better player. You can’t bash Pioli bc this guy sucked and we let him go and then he had a good season and now we may want him. I doubt we make a serious play at Babin.

I've been wondering about this with all the rumors we've heard lately.
The Chiefs are interested in Jonathan Joseph, the Chiefs are interested in Santana Moss, etc. Is it possible that the Chiefs are just a convenient team for agents to use to stir up rumors since they know Pioli is way too secretive to ever confirm or deny it?

Yes, since the Chiefs are one of the teams way under the cap so in theory they can offer more $, from an agent's standpoint

I know in the top one hundred players list from this year,

Give the guy a chance to prove himself before knocking him. Pioli and our team believe in his abilities enough to draft him. We should do the same. In Pioli we trust.

Justin houston can smoke all the pot he wants
if it helps him get sacks/pressure
Huston due to be Inconsistant at best
I’m sure he will have the occasional Demario Williams flashes (haha) of brilliance but to count on a guy who couldn’t consistently show up is asking a lot. If he keeps Eric Berry a lot more fresh than last year then I’m all for it, but let’s see where the kid is week 9 or 10 and we can talk again then. Old habits die hard. This is the same idiot that showed up to the combine with that crap in his system. Chiefs fans putting too much stock in this kid. Talent only gets you so far….Hard work is what makes you great.

Why?
The kid is first round talent. Should he have dropped in the draft because there’s a chance he’s a fuck up, ya but he’s already losing a significant amount of money for a dumb mistake. Lesson learned. But if you think being a stoner means you can’t be a good athlete than we can start naming examples. Michael Phelps anyone?

This won't happen.
We have no place for him in our defense. He plays 4-3D mostly, so we’d have to convert him. We’re basically set at DE, with Dorsey, Jackson, and Bailey. Reports say Smith and Gilberry are coming back, too. Unless Babin sudden;y develops into a NT, there’s no way.
And don’t give me that “he could be a LB” bull. We have Hali, Sheffield, Studebaker, and Houston.
If we address anything defensive in free agency, it will be NT or ILB. Neither is a position Babin could fill.

On Jackson
I think the guy is more of a rotational player at best and i could Gabe Miller or Allen Bailey take his spot this year.
Jackson will probley start at the beginning of the year but by the end of the year i expect Bailey or Miller to be Starting. I could be wrong but Jackson hasn’t shown any real signs of life this year.
However Getting Franklin could be huge and might help Jackson look better than he actually is and maybe we could trade him next offseason for draft picks
just my two cents
by ChiefsManChamps2011 on Jul 27, 2011 2:34 PM CDT reply actions
Well, Miller is a linebacker...
Bailey is kind of undersized to be a base 3-4 DE, and I think most would agree that his frame is probably close to maxed out; also, he kind of has “raw” stamped on his forehead.
So I don’t really think either is competing for Tyson’s job… also, Jackson played well before getting hurt last season (yes, I know it was a small sample) and he’s only just entering his 3rd year.
by bamachief5558 on Jul 27, 2011 2:54 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Jackson is the guy...for now.
It’s his job to lose. Waiting in the corner, though, is Shaun Smith/Wallace Gilberry.
Gilberry is reportedly putting on 15 lbs to build up to being a 3-down DE.
