NFL Free Agency: 49ers Prepared To Lose NT Aubrayo Franklin
With the news that the Kansas City Chiefs have lost NT Ron Edwards to the Carolina Panthers in free agency we now have the biggest question mark on the roster.
What to do about nose tackle?
Every year in free agency, there's one player who Chiefs fans seem to get attached to and this year that player is San Francisco 49ers NT Aubrayo Franklin. He's 31 years old and could command a decent chunk of change on the open market after playing under the franchise tag in San Fran last year.
According to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, the 49ers are prepared to lose Franklin.
But lose him to which team?
That's the question right now. With the Edwards news, you gotta think he at least has the Chiefs attention. He also probably has the attention of a number of other teams which might make him expensive. GM Scott Pioli has said Clark Hunt has never said no to him in free agency so I'm now very curious to where Franklin stands on the wish list.
Tick-tock, tick-tock...

Things are different w/ the salary floor
Pioli is going to have to adjust his strategy as the CBA has changed.

That's what I'm thinking
they don’t need to have the minimum met by the start of the season, and they can reward in-house guys with extensions or restructure them mid-season to meet the floor.
If you can sack groceries, you can sack a QB... right?
The kool-aid is now Berry flavored.
I don't either.
We have been way below the floor, maybe even in the basement.
If he doesn't spend the money on talent it will end up...
going to the likes of McGraw and Kevin effing Curtis. Might as well spend it on players who will contribute.

As we saw before the lockout was up, Many big money guys turn out to be bust.

And many guys on our roster are busts
If they don’t get to the floor the money goes to the guys currently on the roster. Who do you want getting paid, Jackie Battle or Aubrayo Franklin?

No Matt Roth?
Scott Pioli for President in 2012. Experience? If the current President doesn't need it, why does Pioli? Besides, Pioli has the blue collar work ethic with a white collar brain. He has humility. Can't argue with the rest though
Sign Breaston and Franklin then ignore the rest of FA and focus on our guys. Enough money to go around for that.
I love my wife, my kids, and the Chiefs. In that order. Except on game days.

They can get to the cash floor by just resigning Tamba.
by Crown Chief on Jul 27, 2011 11:04 AM CDT up reply actions
Not unless it's the worst contract in the history of sports.
The salary floor is a yearly thing. You can’t just look at the total of one contract.
The floor is actual cash spent. So if he gets a 22 million dollar signing bonus, plus his base salary of 10 million or whatever it is, then that would go a long way.
by Crown Chief on Jul 27, 2011 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions
I don't either
not like we can’t fill out the cap just by signing all of our good young talent
This is my signature line. It is full of awesome and win.
I'd rather resign in house talent to meet the floor
If Pioli goes in this direction, however, I will support it whole heartedly!!!!

What's the penalty if we don't reach the floor?
And would it be worth taking that hit to make sure that you have enough in the bank to re-sign your own free agents the next year? Or enough to sign some other team’s free agent next year?
"The key to victory is not your strength, but your opponent's weakness." -T.
The penalty is probably they have to pay the difference out to the current roster
…at least I think that’s how it worked under the old cap/floor system. Basically you are spending X amount of money whether you have the contracts to get there or not.
by CapsLockKey on Jul 27, 2011 10:52 AM CDT up reply actions
So just a one-year penalty.
And not really a penalty, just paying exactly the least you have to in any case.

Yeah
I don’t think there’s anything to worry about regarding getting one big name free agent. I think we can still do that and resign all of our young talent.
Chris Hoke with PIT is more of a Pioli move than Franklin.
Not that I wouldn’t love AF in red and gold, but I just don’t see it.

Carolina's coach was the D coordinator in Dago so he knows Ron's value. He
will be missed in KC. Signing Smith and another big body is a need now.
I think
Franklin would take the same type of deal for that money if it were 1 to two years longer.. Say 12 million over 4 years..

He is underrated.
If he played in Baltimore or Pitt he would be a household name. He is one of the better run stuffing NT in the NFL. The 49ers thought enough of him to franchise tag him. He would make this defense a lot better on 1st and 2nd down.

I’m surprised. They have to make a move, unless they have way more faith in Powe than I thought. Not saying it has to be Franklin, but they did wait til the 6th to get Powe. What does that say? I’m guessing that there are question marks as much as I liked the pick. This just got real interesting

The Chiefs must have something planned. Edwards left for a reason, and I am sure if Edwards did not fit into the Chiefs plans, they let him know so he could pursue what Carolina offered him, We shall see what the plan is.
Especially with the news that Pioli was working on McGraw and smith next.....
If Edwards was in the plan, you’d think he’d be before McGraw at least….

That and KC didn't try to re-sign him...
From the sound of it, KC didn’t put up much of a fight in retaining Edwards. We want to re-sign Shaun Smith and get another NT.
Almost have to.
Edwards is gone, Powe is a rookie, need to spend the cash.
I don’t get all the “Spend all the money on the current roster” talk. The current roster simply isn’t good enough to win a Superbowl. We won 4 games 1 season ago, and played a rediculously easy schedule last year en route to a home playoff embarassment. Yes the current playes will get better, but so will all teams.

No, all teams don't get better every year.
Only ones that are well managed and coached, and have relatively young rosters.
"The key to victory is not your strength, but your opponent's weakness." -T.
Have to agree
The roster isn’t bad but it isn’t filled with a lot of great players. Good players but not great players. Whatever happens, I’m sure it will be a surprise…it’s Pioli’s MO, until the prognosticators start pontificating and trying to tell everyone that “this is a pure Scott Pioli move…”
Just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys.
The potential for greatness is already on the roster...
Charles may be the best RB in the league, Bowe lead the league in TDs last year and had a 7 game stretch only matched by Jerry Rice, Tamba was the AFC sack leader, and studies by pro football focus show that flowers and Carr were a top 5 CB duo last year. Not to mention Berry will probably be he best safety in the NFL in a couple of years giving the Chiefs the only elite safety in the league unless someone else emerges. And I could easily see a lot of the young talent as potential pro bowlers like Moeaki, Baldwin, Asamoah, Hudson, and maybe even T-Jax if he figures things out.

Still have cox at FB, THomas AARP Jones at RB, and some weak LBs. Not to mention no NT.

Yeah, but he was shut down because the next best option on our team was a rookie TE. I’m just saying I don’t think this team is that far away and I don’t see the need to bring in “great players” because I think we have that foundation already. Franklin scares me, his 2010 season wasn’t as good as his 2009 in my opinion and I think he is going to regress as time goes by, especially after he will have no more incentive to perform except or winning and pride, which doesn’t do it for a lot of these guys.
by Crown Chief on Jul 27, 2011 12:35 PM CDT up reply actions
You win by having more talent than other teams....
That includes having better depth.
A decent portion of last year’s team should have been 2nd teamers at best on a playoff/championship roster. We have to keep adding talent in order to get better AND add depth. It generally takes DL, especially NT 3 years to develop. This is a playoff team with a glaring need at NT. A vet has to be picked up.
Baldwin isn’t going to come in looking like Randy moss. That’s why we need another receiver. To stop Bowe and Moeaki from getting blanketed.

I agree with WR. I’m all for Breaston, but he isn’t going to break the bank like Franklin will. I guess it all depends on how much Franklin wants. If we don’t sign Franklin I’m OK with Smith as the stop gap until Powe or someone else can fill the role.
But smith is a DE first.
It doesnt have to be Franklin, though he is the run stopper we need. I could see Pat Williams getting a Thomas jones esque deal. Or even Gregg for a few years.
Franklin for four years strengthens this team and improves the linebackers. Who else can your say that for? Frontload the deal, and by season four Powe is ready to start (hopefully) and you can phase Franklin out.
Unless he wants or gets offered Haynesworth $$$, he is almost a must have.

Hes the perfect age for our situation at NT. He is easily a top 5 NT in this league. We are the only 34 team i can think of without a legitimate NT. He couldnt go anywhere else
Now that is some serious junk in the trunk...
