Do The Kansas City Chiefs dip into their Piggy Bank this offseason
One thing i think i've learned from a long term fan relationship with the Chiefs is, not to expect much in Free Agency. With all the media hub-bub today and listening to Pioli this morning, seems like nothing will be different in this lockout shortened offseason. In my humble (yes humble I'm no expert) opinion, what i took from this mornings presser, was the team plans on retaining our guys and extending other players (I.E. Bowe, Flowers, come to mind off hand) rather than spending free wheel'd on the big free agent targets. Which isn't such a bad thing after all, I think we'd all like to see those guys in red and gold for a long while. I as many of you would love to see them grab a couple of the big names to fill the holes we seem to all agree they have, just doesn't seem the Chief way unfortunately.I also have to factor in the NFL Head Coach and GM mind set into to this logic a bit. If i may take a stab at it here, ( thePioli/Haley thought process) " We just won a division spending the second lowest amount of money last season. We drafted our needs, let's just get our guys some cash and pickup some depth and we're good to go for 2011". It's hard as fans to consider this logic because we always believe we know what the team needs, but it makes a ton of sense. On one hand you have a situation where signing a big name or two and parading them around in front of the media would move some tickets( Dan Snyder ), then on the other you have a situation where you're coming off a playoff appearance, an almost legendary performance by Jamaal Charles, and Pro Bowl years for multiple players, so that also translates to butts in the seats. So as a business owner, which do you choose. I think looking at it that way makes me see the Pioli regime mode of thought. As fans we always want the biggest, best, fastest, junk grabbinist players, but as a businessman are those things necessary to make a "decent" product and make me money? The answer, in a football town like KC... Not necessarily... I look for the brain trust at One Arrowhead drive to lean largely on our success in 2010 and not use a pretty new face to lure us to Arrowhead in 2011..

(Former 49er Defensive Tackle Aubrayo Franklin awaits a new team to beckon)As far as the Free Agent market goes, there's plenty of talent out there and we all have our favorites from this guy to that guy. I think the teams mode of thought is focus on the UDFA market and eventually we'll sign some depth players to fill slots or to challenge our weaker positions. Who those guys are, I'm not going to speculate.. ( We got enough of those FA posts that we've pounded to death). This was just my take on Pioli's comments this morning and past trends of the Chiefs brass. I'm sorry to be the Free agency equivalent of Debbie Downer but to me this seems more realistic than us bringing in that "Guy or Guys" we've all been tootin the FA horn for.
Anyone else come to this sad realization today?
