Baltimore Ravens Cuts Could Interest Kansas City Chiefs
Actually, the Baltimore Ravens cuts could interest darn near every team in the league. They're one of the most talented rosters in the league and they've began the process of informing players of their release when the league year opens.
Those players include RB Willie McGahee, TE Todd Heap, NT Kelly Gregg and WR Derrick Mason.
Could any of them fit in Kansas City? GM Scott Pioli should have these guys fresh in his memory after last January's playoff loss to the Ravens.
On McGahee and Heap...I'd say probably not. The Chiefs have RB Thomas Jones, a veteran like McGahee, already in place. At tight end, the Chiefs have one of the real up-and-comers in the league in TE Tony Moeaki so they're good there. (I can already tell by my Twitter feed that a good chunk of Chiefs fans will want Heap.)
On Gregg and Mason...I could see a little bit of interest here. Both positions are ones where the Chiefs have rookies coming in that could use a veteran as a bridge in 2011. I'm not sure if either player would be interest in KC (or, on that point, if KC is even interested in them) but it's something to at least keep an eye on.
We'll see if the Chiefs choose to take a look at any of these guys in the coming days when free agency starts. Some teams out there will get a nice short-term boost from a few of these players.

Joel Did Baltimore save any 2011 salary with these cuts?
it might mean they are going try to keep Laron McClain (spelling) on their roster
Yeah they did, reportedly over $18 million
Or it could mean Nnamdi. Not sure what it means yet, maybe just getting younger and faster.

So is Cody their starting NT?
Or did they draft another guy this year who might be in the mix?

He is mainly at DE in the base formation due to his knees being bad
Although with their scheme they try to make teams run at him forcing him to basically be the NT

Nope that was Kelly Gregg
Ngata was their NT with Gregg rotating in…
Go Chiefs!!!!
No Gregg was their starting NT playing heads up on the center
Ngata plays the DE aka 5tech role. However they place him on the strong side of the offense, so they force teams to run at him or run away from Ngata into a stacked line.

Good thought on assmugger.
Reed would have to teach him how to tackle, though.

Like many of your twitter followers Joel, I disagree with no intrest in Heap
After Moeaki there’s nobody at TE. Y not have him?
Pope's just fine as a #2 tight end
Jack of all trades, master of none.

Heap's interesting
Not that i want anyone taking catch’s away from Tony 2.0.. The two of them together in all those dual tight sets could be a playaction nightmare for opposing D’s..
Thank the tiny infant baby Jesus we will have football!!!!!
Depends on his asking price
he would certainly upgrade O’Connell and/or Cottam, as well as Pope. However, TE is not a top priority for upgrade, and we will need to save as much cap space as we can to re-sign our own players and pick up some key FAs.
Gregg and Heap
Veterans to help mentor and polish our younger players. Both guys would be able to contribute and at least push for starting jobs.
Neither one will command a huge paycheck.

Heap killed us in the playoff game.
Same inside slant rinse and repeat and we couldn’t cover it. Good Route guy, struggles with durability but in splitting time with T2.0 a great situation for him and us…

Just with those two alone we're saving ourselves over 3 million
Considering how much room we’ve got under the cap already, that almost seems like small potatoes.
But hey, it could pay for a vet like Gregg…

All kidding aside, I haven’t been this jacked for FA ever. It’s SO much more fun when you’re talking about upgrading or filling in a couple of holes, rather than, “How can we replace half our team?”

I brought this up right after the playoff loss last January.
A guy I know has front row seats about 2 sections over from the tunnel in the endzone and he said Stallworth came over to their group and said he was looking forward to playing in KC next year. Coincidence, we shall see.

We seem to collect veteran WRs at the beginning of the season lately. And we could use one ("mentor" is becoming a very tired word).
I don’t know about his skill level now, though, didn’t watch the Ravens much last year. Except our playoff game, and I think Heap caught every single pass that was thrown in that one.

Todd Heap
6’5", 247lbs, 31 years old
Nine years in the NFL.
467 Catches, 5,492 Yards, 41 TDS
Last Season 40 Catches, 599 yards, 5 TDS
He has only not started in 7 games he was involved in since 2001.

I mean, he put up like 286 yards on the ground against the Chiefs, right? That’s 10 yards short of the record. Our D was TURRIBLE, but still, that raises eyebrows. It makes me so curious as to what this guy can actually do.
I wonder why he is bouncing around the league.. seems like a few teams could definitely use him, including the Browns and Eagles.

The prospect of signing Le'Ron McClain makes my mouth water.
Not just because he’s a ‘Bama boy (which he is — he is Rolando McClain’s cousin for those who didn’t know) but because he’s a straight-up beast. He is probably my favorite fullback in the league. He will hammer someone as a lead blocker or carry the rock his damn self and grind out some very nice yards.
He would be a perfect answer to Cox/Castille AND the aging Thomas Jones as an outstanding power compliment to Jamaal Charles.
