Pat Devlin And Other Pre-Draft Interests That Are Still Available

The NFL draft has came and gone and we have sat in limbo with the lockout.

Rumors are running that the NFL will soon open up business and then we will see all kinds of activity including, free agent signings, rookie contracts and undrafted rookie signings.

Fortunately for the Chiefs, many of the players that showed interest in are still available after going undrafted. After the jump we will take a look at each and every player that the Chiefs had interest in (that we know of) before that draft that could still end up in a Chiefs uniform.

Star-divide

Pat Devlin- The QB out of Delaware has gotten a lot of interest around the league.  Kansas City brought him in for a private workout before the draft and they could still be looking at him as a possible backup option.

Dane Sanzenbacher- The undrafted WR was seen speaking with the Chiefs at the Senior Bowl. Sanzenbacher would be the type of player to come in and play the slot. He concluded his career at Ohio St. with 121 receptions for 1820 yards and 19 touchdowns.

David Mims-The 6'8 331 pound OT has worked out for the Chiefs. He would upgrade a position that was not addressed in the draft. Look for the Chiefs to add one or two tackles either in regular free agency or with undrafted players.

Noel Devine- A 5'7  160pound running back that peaked the Chiefs interest at the Senior Bowl. It is hard to imagine where he would fit in the Chiefs offense.

Jock Sanders- The teammate of Noel Devine, another small player that is a Dexter McCluster type player that  the Chiefs noticed at the Senior Bowl. He is another player I have a hard time seeing in Kansas City.

Brian Smith-Played OLB his senior season with the Fighting Irish. A fiery leader on and off the field, Smith is the kind of player that Scott Pioli likes on his team. His father actually had a short stint in Kansas City. Unfortunately, the Chiefs have been aggressive at the OLB position so I don't think he will have much of a chance to get signed by the Chiefs.

Mason Brodine-The 6'7 255 pound defensive end has garnered some interest from the Chiefs even after playing for a small school (University of Nebraska at Kearney). The Chiefs, along with a few other teams requested film.

Mana Silva- The strong safety out of Hawaii was able to gain a lot of interest from teams after strong workouts at his pro day. He was able to run a 40 time average of 4.44, had a 40 inch vertical, 10-3 broad jump, 4.16 short shuffle, 7.01 three cone drill and 23 strength lifts. The Chiefs brought him in for a private workout prior to the draft. He would help add depth to the Chiefs safety position.

Preston Dial- This guy is an H-back type of player that the Chiefs where interested in but ended up drafting a true fullback. Dial is said to have soft hands, very aware on the field, leadership qualities and great blocking skills. I could see the Chiefs still bringing in someone like Dial to compete for a FB or backup tight end position.

Eric Gordon-An explosive OLB that has been restricted due to his size (5'11 225 pounds). The Chiefs where spotted speaking with him at the Michigan St. Pro Day. Gordon is one of many OLB players that are still available after the draft. I still do not expect the Chiefs to sign many at the position because we have drafted many LB type players in the last two seasons.

Jarred Fayson- A very quick WR coming out of Illinois, Aaron Wilson confirmed that the Chiefs where one of ten teams that had shown interest before the draft. He did not put up great numbers in college but he ran a 4.36 in the 40 yard dash.

Joe Morgan-Another WR from a small school, it was reported that the Chiefs had held a visit with Morgan. He  ran a 4.38 at his Pro Day and a 4.40 at the combine.

Justin Trattou-Played defensive end at the University of Florida but had a workout with the Chiefs linebacker coaches. He projects to play OLB in the 3-4 defense. Okay... Maybe they will sign one or two OLB players that remain undrafted.. Doesn't hurt to add depth.

Kris O'Dowd-Once considered a top tier center and was expected to be selected mid-rounds in this draft, O'Dowd has since fallen into the undrafted area of players. The Chiefs spoke with him at the Senior Bowl and might be interested in bringing him in to compete for a backup position at the center of the Chiefs offensive line.

Josh Baker-Another H-back type of player. Baker had his stock go up right before the draft. Sources have told me that many teams are interested in him as an UDFA. He blocks very well, has soft hands  and his game speed is quick.

Adam Weber-The Chiefs showed interest in the potential backup quarterback after attending the Minnesota Pro Day. Some of the knocks on Weber are a lack of arm strength, accuracy and he occasionally makes bad decisions.

Damien Berry- Omar Kelly reported that the Chiefs conducted a private workout with the small Miami runningback. He has been labeled as a power back but he claims that he is also shifty. He ran a 4.56 at the Miami Pro Day and a 4.58 at the NFL combine.

Phillip Tanner-Add another runningback that could be signed. The Chiefs showed interest in the Middle Tennessee player according to Bo Marchionte. Entering the final game of his college career, he had 34 touchdowns. He looks to be a player that is used in many ways including returns and wide receiver.

Colin Miller-Reports surfaced from ChippewaCountry.com that the Chiefs where interested in the experienced center. He very well could be picked up to try and compete for a backup spot behind Wiggs and Hudson.

Terrence McCrae-According to Aaron Wilson the Chiefs conducted an on campus interview with the  Ohio WR. McCrae is a redzone threat. He ran a 4.42 40 yard dash at the Ohio Pro Day. I look for the Chiefs to sign atleast one undrafted wide receiver.

Jamorris Warren-The Central Missouri product drew some interest after attending the Mizzou Pro Day. The 6'1 197 pound WR ended his senior season with 109 receptions for 1,458 yards and 20 touchdowns. That is great production at any college level. I could see Warren staying local and signing with the Chiefs.

Cole Brodie-The Chiefs showed interest in the CB/KR after attending the South Dakota State Pro Day. The 5'10 188 pound corner ran the 40 yard dash at 4.41 and 4.43 at the Pro Day and benched 225 pounds 16 times.

Stephen Franklin- Tweeted that the Kansas City Chiefs wanted him to come work out for them. Unfortunately, we do not know if the workout ever took place. He plays ILB so the Chiefs could still be interested in brining him to compete in the middle.

David Leonard- The last player on the list is Kansas City native David Leonard. The WR was able to get a workout with the Chiefs and could be a longshot to get signed. If the Chiefs are interested I would see him choosing them so he can go home.

The Chiefs will probably at least sign 1-2 of these guys.. Who do you think it will be?

Let him heal and learn behind Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles.

He is going to be a special back if he regains his form, look at him owning my Skers’

Working with the Chiefs could be a perfect fit for him.

Pat Devlin

As a lifelong Penn Stater, I find the possibility of Pat Devlin interesting. A lot of PSUers thought VERY highly of Devlin and imagined that he would turn into a Kerry Collins-type QB by his senior year. Unfortunately for Devlin, Darryl Clark turned into a monster QB for the Lions, while Devlin sat on the bench and ultimately transferred. I’ll be curious to see where Devlin ends up and whether he’s been able to develop his potential. With Stanzi around, though, Devlin would have his hands full at KC even making the squad.

He ran a 4.56 at the combine. That put him 30th in the 40 with 41 WRs at the combine. I think that might of hurt him…

especially on the race comments, the Wes Welker comparisons do get pretty ridiculous. Just cuz they are both white receivers doesn’t mean they HAVE to be compared to one another.

Dirk and Bird comparisons. Two very great, but very different players. But they are tal white guys that shoot very well

but NOT Cole Brodie. his name sounds waaaaaaay too familiar

Good write up but a little tough to read.

I’m going to try to pinpoint names but I’d like to see KC bring in two WRs and, after missing on my boy Blount last year, a RB.

Agreeing with you twice in one post...scary

I really wanted the Chiefs to bring in Blount last year too. He was at least a 2nd round talent. And a couple WR’s to compete with last years decent CFA’s brought in (Tucker, Horne) and a big RB like maybe a John Clay would be kick a$$.

Gotta bring O'Dowd in too

He’s played in a Pro-Style offense and should be able to be a close to immediate backup for all three interior line positions.

I agree with that.

But I doubt he would want to come here, his prospects for starting and or playing right away are slim.

We have 2 starting interior O Linemen who are a hair away from retiring

O’Dowd to back up LG / C / RG isn’t a bad situation at all. For us or him. (Assuming Asamoah and Hudon do indeed win their respective starting roles once Weigs and Waters are gone).

Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.

by TRSChief on Jul 14, 2011 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions

It would be sick

if Asamoah and Hudson pan out like they’re supposed to and then they pick up O’Dowd and he develops into a starter. The o-line might be able to get back to where it used to be…Tops in the NFL! Then a solid RT is the only issue. Maybe Richardson will take another step too with some more playing time. Man they need to get this deal done so we can all see how this is gonna play out. If they do the next month or so will be so joyous for everyone!

again, I bring up Kirkpatrick and Barnes

along with O’Dowd, there are 3 potential future players at the C/G position still available

by stagdsp on Jul 14, 2011 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Wasn't Kirkpatrick more highly rated?

Both of those guys were once thought to be starting material.

by Chiefs4Life on Jul 14, 2011 5:39 PM CDT up reply actions

O'Dowd and Nisewanger are cut from the same nasty cloth...

Too tall for the center position, not physical enough to stick at guard and not as athletic as they seem. Plus, Rudy knows the system. Not an upgrade if you ask me.

Don’t judge me H2E—it appears every other NFL GM found something they didn’t like about O’Dowd, too. He’s no Kalil or Unger (two Pac-10 centers who I’d love to see in KC).

He also has some injury issues

There are plenty of centers that are 6’4’’ or 6’5’’, its all about leverage not height

I buy that...there have been some very good 6'4", 6'5" centers (Matt Birk, Steve Everett, Nick Mangold)...

Still not sold on O’Dowd. Better to sign Jason Spitz, the ex-Packer then (6’3.5")—we know he can play center, and play it well.

O'Dowd would be worth bringing in IF we can clear him physically

IMO he has the ability to play the C/G role very well and we can always use depth on the Oline

Well done, and with the rumours of 90 player training camp warm bodies will be needed

I’m sure some of whom you listed will get an invite, but they get a choice too, and with many teams needing bodies it will be interesting to see how this new season begins. By all accounts this is going to be a frenzy of sharks feeding on unsigned players, we get a chance to see Pioli feed!

I really like your list

in my opinion I still really want the Chiefs to go after this guy…

Jeff Maehl – He would be a perfect candidate to compete for the Chiefs slot position. He broke the combine record in the shuttle and would give the Chiefs a great passing target on any “down and short.” How he was drafted is a mystery.

I agree with the Pat Devlin pickup, and if the Chiefs were to go with three QB’s I would love that list to read:

#1. Matt Cassel

#2. Ricky Stanzi

#3. Pat Devlin – Pat Devlin not getting drafted is another weird anomaly. While he certainly wasn’t Joe Flacco at Deleware, he was a very good college QB, that seems to be game manager ready in the NFL. I would have been extrememly happy if the Chiefs would have selected him in any round past the third.

The idea that we could potentially have both QB’s has me drooling. Check out some highlights here.

Of course I love this guy…

Mark Herzlich – Love the Road Warrior – Legion Of Doom look… FYI, anyone know that James Laurinaitis is the Animals’ son.

Though there are a bunch of guys, I want the Chiefs to bring in FA this year. In fact, this is probably the best UDFA class I have seen in years, but maybe we have just been studying them to hard.

Let’s get some football so we can see who they go after.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Chiefs raid this list with money.

and go soft in FA…

There is a lot of talent this year.

Imagine if the Chiefs pulled in:

Pat Devlin
Jeff Maehl
Alex Wujciak
Brian Lainhart
Alex Linnenkohl
Ian Williams
Darren Evans
David Mims

Then went out and signed in FA
Steve Smith (Giants)
Tom Zbikowski
Ryan Harris
Kevin Burnett

Any variation of that makes me excited. This Chiefs team is going to be great, people need to know that.

I agree – I’ve had that feeling since I researched the guys we drafted in 2011. I don’t know what the strange offseason will do to the learning curve, but I have a strong suspicion that when the lightbulb goes on for Mr. Baldwin, he, Cassel, and Bowe may blow the place up.

2010 one was on the best draft in a long time…

However, this was a decent draft, and could have a great UDFA class to go along with it in five years.

CBS

The term “tackling machine” gets thrown around quite a bit, but few embodied the moniker as Lemon did during his senior season. The undersized inside linebacker overcame a major setback to earn first-team record 132 total tackles, including an FBS third-best 101 solo stops, and two sacks in 2010 — though his road to stardom was anything but easy.

Lemon left Yates High School as a quarterback but shifted to defense as a freshman in 2006. He learned the position while playing sparingly his first two years (13 games, six tackles, interception), but that changed in 2008 when the junior stopper started all 13 contests. He notched 90 tackles, good enough for second on the team, with four behind the line, eight pass breakups and two forced fumbles.

However, a torn left ACL days before the opening game of the 2009 season derailed what promised to be a banner year for Lemon, so he took a medical redshirt. His ability to return strong from that injury this fall, and his production and a lack of 4-3 “Mike” linebackers, should lead to a late-round selection.

I had OT Willie Smith E Car) as a real possibility to be drafted

as early as 5th round. I would like to see him given a chance. Might be a good one. or…. something stunk up the works and everyone kept hands off. I thought too good not to be drafted.

Stephen Franklin

I have known Stephen Franklin since elementary school and I saw him play at SIU. I talked to him before the draft and he said the Chiefs had been talking to him and don’t quote me but i think he did work out with the Chiefs, I think he would be great depth.and the kid is a great athlete, he played runningback in highschool. I do think that the Chiefs need to add another receiver and Sanzenbacher would be a good fit.
