For the first time this offseason it looks like someone did their homework.

Pretty much spot on which is almost shocking when it comes to pft.

I agree

When Florio lets Rosenthal do the heavy lifting, their material tends to be much better.

I really like PFT..

I feel like they really pay attention to every single team and know their stuff.

Florio and PFT were rooting for the Chiefs all season while everyone else was waiting for them to crash and burn a la Denver ’09.

Interesting list

The first one makes me laugh, they always say we need a Tackle. I think we were after Jah Reid in the 3rd but the Ravens traded in front of us, he’s underrated and shut down our other 3rd rounder Justin Houston in the Bowl game.

In a way I guess that’s rolling the dice. But I like B-Rich, I think he can develop quite nicely especially after his first year starting.

We do need a Tackle.

The debate becomes do we need a starting tackle or just depth? I think they let Brich have a second year starting as it seems like Pioli likes to see if his guy will develop.

I really wonder if the Chiefs will get a starter for RT

and have Richardson play the swing.

Will definitely be a fun Training camp battle to watch

by Steve_Chiefs on Jun 30, 2011 5:52 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't be surprised if we brought in some free agent competition at RT

but there is no way Pioli was going to spend a high draft pick on a position he might be able to fill with a 6th round pick who was already on the roster (“might” as in “I am happy with the progress Richardson made in one year of starting, let’s see if that trend continues for one more year…if not, then we’ll reevaluate”)

No mention of Dexter McCluster as a third receiver?

I like Steve Breaston, he is a popular pick as our third wideout.

Steve Breaston
Danny Amendola
Steve Smith
Jeff Maehl
Santana Moss

The Chiefs will sign a third receiver. Who will it be?

by Chief-blinders-on on Jun 30, 2011 12:48 PM CDT reply actions

McCluster needs to be moved permanently to returner. I get that he’s a threat anywhere on the field, but that’s only if he can stay on the field.

by JComp11 on Jun 30, 2011 12:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Comp, he had one sever ankle sprain.

It could of happened to anybody.

Before the injury he showed some toughness… I think he will be fine. I don’t think him be lined up as receiver, HB, and returning kicks where the cause of the injury.

He was a play maker with the ball in his hands, and you use play makers in the NFL.

meh...

by Chief-blinders-on on Jun 30, 2011 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions

You’re right, it could have happened to anybody. But having him returning full-time reduces the chances that the little guy gets hurt again but still takes advantage of his talent. I wouldn’t mind seeing him on offense every once in a while, but not nearly as much as some people are wanting/expecting.

by JComp11 on Jun 30, 2011 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd rather he not be a returner full time

I know we all love Dante Hall, but his career was shortened being a full time returner

Besides we have Javier Arenas

Don’t count him out, he will be a fine returner. He is to talented.

by Chief-blinders-on on Jun 30, 2011 2:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Javier played better on defense when he wasn’t returning and he returned better when he wasn’t playing defense. He needs to be doing one or the other, not both. Why weaken three positions? Just put one of the two guys at returner and find someone else to do their job on offense or defense.

by JComp11 on Jun 30, 2011 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Or

Just have Dex as a flex returner/WR/RB

Also, totally called the Gabe Miller pick. so yeah I'm awesome.

by ChiefWarPaint on Jun 30, 2011 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions

That has to do with the “Why weaken three positions?” part of the comment. I don’t think there’s much of an advantage to switch off Arenas and Dex at KR when that reduces their effectiveness at WR & CB.

I guess the whole point is that #3WR should be filled by one person, the returner should be another (Dex), and the Nickel CB should be a third person (Arenas). Blinders has a very valid point — Brown could become that Nickel with Arenas moving to full-time returner coming in once in awhile to blitz at CB.

by JComp11 on Jun 30, 2011 3:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I think that isht is overblown, to be honest

I mean, 11th defense @ points scored against, so its not like he was overworked in the Kick return game. And it’s not like we came out in 3 receiver sets at a Saints, Colts, Pats or Chargers frequency.

Sure, less touches for ANY player means less of a chance for injury. Certainly it should be monitored. But he’s not seeing either side of the field with too much frequency, imo. He got injured, it happens.

With Arenas, it’s different. He most certainly saw more action in Nickel sets than Dex saw in Trips, in addition to picking up the slack while Dex was out for 5 weeks.

by ArrowSpread on Jun 30, 2011 3:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I’m only talking about Dex being used more often or becoming a larger part of the offense than last season. Last year he wasn’t used much unless it was as a decoy and I don’t think that was bad at all and is part of why he should be the full-time returner.

Haley said that he put Dex in to return after seeing that Arenas was winded during the San Diego game (I think). I would rather see Dex in there full time with Arenas focusing on the Nickel. Unless, of course, Brown comes in and shows that he can be that guy.

by JComp11 on Jun 30, 2011 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Roger that

If its either/or, I’d rather see Dex become a larger part of the offense and leave returning up to someone else. As an offensive weapon, he’s just too dangerous to be relegated to return duties. Hester or Cribbs, he is not. Likewise, neither of those two are lighting the world on fire on offense.

Potentially, of course.

Dex obviously isn’t lighting the world on fire on offense either, but I think the potential there is a bit higher.

I think the Chiefs look at effectiveness versus playing time on a case by case basis.

Look at Jamaal Charles versus Eric Berry.

Eric berry was in for like 100% of the snaps plus Special teams play.

Obviously they had Jamaal Charles on a limited schedule. How do they determine this? I have no idea. Though it is part of how they do things.

If the Chiefs felt Arenas and McCluster couldn’t handle everything on their plates and still be effective. Then I doubt we would see them put them into those situations at all. 2011 will be very telling for how they feel about their abilities to produce in many roles at their sizes. I have no doubt it effected Arenas’s shiftiness in the return game. This isn’t college.

Properly used Arenas will explode.

meh...

by Chief-blinders-on on Jun 30, 2011 3:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Right. Its just my opinion that Dex is best-used as a returner and Arenas as a CB.

As far as who plays what, it’s a lot different for a D-back as a safety who doesn’t absorb 3 or 4 hits every single play and is usually the one giving, not receiving, the blow. The good thing about this year is that we have more talent and guys like Arenas should be able to focus more on a single position.

by JComp11 on Jun 30, 2011 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I think that is why we drafted Jalil Brown

This year we will see Javy’ as more of a pure returner. He will start the year on defense and transfer into a returner/ blitzing CB role.

I think something similar will happen between Dexter and whom ever the Chiefs bring in to compete at slot.

meh...

by Chief-blinders-on on Jun 30, 2011 2:52 PM CDT up reply actions

That is why I think Danny Amendola would be a great pick up.

Throw him in to compete with Dex and let the best returner win…

By being a part-time receiver and full-time returner. And that’s exactly what I’m talking about. I’d rather see Dex stick to returning and find someone else to be the third receiver/H-Back or whatever on offense.

And who as the returner?

by JComp11 on Jun 30, 2011 3:25 PM CDT up reply actions

I think it will still be important because teams will try to kick the ball into their own red zonetrying to pin back the opponent.

Though it is yet to be seen, I dislike the rule change. Though it will be good for Succop to actually get touchbacks, and he has the perfect leg to pin opponents deep under the new rule.

by Chief-blinders-on on Jun 30, 2011 9:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Another good point. I think it makes it even more important to be quick, like Dex.

by JComp11 on Jul 1, 2011 8:41 AM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t mind seeing him on offense every once in a while, but not nearly as much as some people are wanting/expecting.

He is certainly durable enough for the Chiefs to use him as a returner and a 3rd down back (splitting time with Charles who is, at this point, much better at picking up a blitzer)

I’d like to see him on the field for 10-15 plays a game (he’s just as valuable as a decoy, so he could carry it 5 times, run a route 5 times, and be a decoy 5 times) plus be the KR (I like Arenas better as PR)

by PVChiefsfan on Jun 30, 2011 6:52 PM CDT up reply actions

you are writing him off way too quickly. he had a severe ankle sprain which ruins his entire edge

he was never the same, before that point, he was at least involved and showed some signs in the 49ers game of what he can do for the team on offense.

we will see if he can stay on the field or not, but I think he will be moved between slot and HB and will end up proving a lot of people wrong.

I think alot of people have read into Haleys words too much with regards to McCluster when he said they want him at RB more this year.

I dont think that means that he wont be at WR sometimes but I think we bring in someone. I like Breaston and Lance Moore and would love to see a rookie like Maehl brought in.

We dont need Manning BAM....Stanzi is the next Tom Brady haha....

anyways…yah…probably not rice….maybe Breston

But I think Franklin and Harris are entirely possible

I think “the time is now” to make a big move or two in free agency

…I mean…in a way…we almost have all the pieces in place…we are close to “one player away”

talk.

Team Berry

Look at Pioli's history he will not go get all the big name guys face it

Keep pimpin Franklin and more than likely you will just be disappointed, it doesn’t really make sense that Pioli would spend big bucks on an old, hot and cold NT

What? Just because you are voted to a Pro Bowl doesn’t mean you are pro bowl caliber, Wade Smith should have definitely gotten in over him.

I've wondered about that as well Steve. I think Wade was doing

about as well as Richardson is. Not sure what they saw in him they didn’t like. He must not have been a Haley program kinda guy. I guess they had to go with one or the other and Wade got to ply his wares elsewhere.

by stagdsp on Jul 1, 2011 1:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Interesting Stags

Though Wade would have been great on the line last year, and I think Jim \/\/ makes a point down below. Though I never heard any rumors of Smith not getting along with the coaching staff.

I think it was just a case of not evaluating his potential properly versus his worth. Sorta like when they let Jason Babin go, who did show flashes when he was in KC.

I am not sure, though in hindsight letting those two players go was a mistake. Jerell Powe or not, we got lucky that a sixth round pick turned into the NT of some fans wet ones.
