Available FA that I would LOVE to see the Chiefs sign
There a quite a few quality Free Agents to be had this season and here are a few that I would love the see our Chiefs go after. In no particular order here they are...
Eric Weddle, S, Chargers. Age: 26
Could you imagine a Chiefs back field that sports Eric & Eric to go along with Brandon & Brandon? Just WOW! Ganking one of the Chargers best players away from them wouldn't hurt my feeling any either.
Paul Posluszny, ILB, Bills. Age: 26
This guy hasn't had less then 110 tackles in the last 3 years (over 150 tackles last year). This guy is good, this guy is young, and this guy would make a great addition to our LB core. I was VERY impressed with his 11 solo, 6 assists, 1 pass defended when the Bills played the Chiefs last season.
via media.nesn.com
Nnamdi Asomugha, CB, Raiders. Age: 30
This is the only person who has ever put on a Raider uniform that I have ever liked (Bo Jackson included). Not only is he a shut down corner, but a class act through and through. If we can sign him and keep both the Brandons our Chief will without-a-doubt have the best back field in the NFL bar-none!
via i.usatoday.net
Vonta Leach, FB, Texans. Age: 29
Not only does he share a last name with the greatest actor off all time (bonus points to anyone who can tell me the name of this actor) but he is one hell of a FB to boot. I have been hoping for our Chiefs to pick up a really good FB since ours left for the Jets.
Tim Hightower, RB, Cardinals. Age: 25
Not the top RB free agent prospect this season but I think that a rotation of JC, TJ, and Hightower will help our Chiefs retain our spot as the NFL top rushing attack, keep JC fresh, and be a nice replacement for Jones once he is ready to call it quits.
So, what does everyone think? Who would you like to see our Chiefs go after once the CBA is complete?

My Thoughts
Weddle: Would be a good addition but we won’t spend the money. We have Berry who is already in the top 5 safety in the NFL Discussion. We also have Lewis who did great in his own right.
Posluszny: He would look real nice next to DJ in the middle. Thumbs up!
Asomugha: We can’t afford him and our CB’s hold up well. Just need help in the slot or more development from Arenas.
Leach: Would be nice but we really don’t need him. Obviously, we can rush without a big named FB.
Hightower: Might be an interesting addition if our coaches could work with him to develop his running more. Jones won’t be here forever.
I have to ask 85
we won’t spend the money
We can’t afford him
With those comments, have you read the news about how the Teams like the Chiefs may be forced to spend money?
We have a very crafty GM, one that will use every possible advantage available to him. So if these changes happen, I wouldn’t count out anyone in FA.
That includes guys like… Free, Asomugha, Weddle, Smith, Franklin, Clabo
While I still don’t feel the Chiefs will get into bidding wars with anyone. They will probably take the pick of the liter and use the rest in house. The money will be there.

I don't think anyone knows what will happen
I just doubt we go after the real big names. Maybe one. I have read the news but wasn’t that all speculation?
Nothing is written in stone
Though that is a stupid things to tease the fans with, if you are an owner releasing info to the media, and it is being widely reported from multiple sources.
Who knows, I just hope they make a deal, and that stipulation really makes sense to get the players to bite on a lower percentage.
It was a smart negotiating tactic by the owners, or whoever.

I dont see Asomugha coming to KC
Crennel’s scheme is a zone blitz defense, with fire principals and 3 deep coverage.
That kind of defense is built around playing zone coverage, and having an athletic safety splitting the hairs.
We added Berry to fill that safety spot, and the defense isn’t built around man principals.
Asomugha is most assuredly a man to man specialist, and that’s just not how were built. You want to be able to play man when you need to play it, but the guys on the field the majority of the time should fit your scheme.
The Powers Of Astute Observation Are Often Mistaken As Cynicism By Those That Do Not Posses Them -- G.B. Shaw
Absoultely this.
Flowers is a great zone CB. I’ll take Flowers for the kind of D we play over Asomugah any day of the week.
Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.
I'm not sure I would say we are a zone blitz defense
We don’t blitz that often, usually just rush 4 in the base sets with a mix of man and cover 3.

There is no say Asomugha doesn't fit every defense ever.
The guy is that freaking good.
Crennel could handle it.

Actually Scrabble fits better in a dominate man defense
Opposed to a zone or even a say 60man/40zone team, he is at his best when he can press at the line then use his length/speed to catch up to the WR in man coverage, not playing off and playing the ball in zone

I am wondering if we will start blitzing more as Crennel gets more comfortable with Berry and Lewis (or even the Brandons, who are both still young). There were times last season when it was obvious to me that we needed to blitz to effectively generate pressure, but we were still usually rushing 4 and dropping 7, possibly because Crennel didn’t like the idea of Berry and/or Lewis and/or Belcher in man coverage…

That zone stuff was invented because secondaries couldn't match up physically.
Adding a guy that CAN man-up makes everything easier for the DC. No question.
We’re talking about zone like it’s a GOAL rather than a necessity. When it’s no longer a necessity, everybody’s job gets easier, except the guy you strand in single coverage.
NFL is all about winning matchups. Bringing in a guy who wins more matchups is GOOD, no matter how you slice it.

Romeo is known for loving his bend don't break cover 3
I don’t think he has ever really utilized a man to man on the #1 then zone like the Jet’s defense uses with Revis on his island. He has never had someone with Scrabble’s skills though

He's singled-up Carr in some key situations.
But I don’t necessarily see it as singling-up the #1. What I see is more a matter of singling-up in more places. The way I see it, your #2 and #3 doubling-up their #1 might be the optimum. Asomugha gives you more options on how you can play it. And you always have the option of rolling everything away from the one guy in your hip pocket, whether you play it that way on a given snap, or not.
Like I always rant, I’m big on the inside leverage, but there’re pick-6’s in the changeup, when you’ve been successful throttling everything they want to do in the middle of the field. But I far prefer that inside-outside and over-and-under stuff as the changeup that either gives your 3- or 4-man rush to strike home, or sets you up for the pick on that quick out or the out-and-up that you’ve been daring them to try all day long.
But enough about me. I agree. Romeo seems to keep extra guys back and playing eyes-front.

Ty Law was very versatile.
He had better hands, was more physical and very clutch.
I have no doubt that he could have played man at almost the same level.
Nmandi is excellent at blanket coverage, but Ty law wasn’t exactly a hack to the level where you can say Romeo never had anyone of that skill level.
He has never had someone with Scrabble’s skills though.
Ty Law is a potential HOF CB that is pretty high level.

Ty was better in zone, and no I don't believe Ty was more physical at the line
if you talk about tackles well that stat goes out the window with Scrabble being in man to man and having his back to the ball most of the time.

Ty Law was physical at the line.
It would be hard to say how he would have done in man to man more. Though Ty mugged receivers at that line of scrimmage, he was a very physical corner.
Nmandi is a great cover corner, there is not doubt about that. His cover skills are tremendous, but he was not that much better at it than Ty Law. That is just crazy talk.
Plus Ty Law was just a better rounded CB. His game was more complete, he had much better hands, and anticipation.
I am not knocking Nmandi Asomugha, he is outstanding, but even our own Brandon Flowers can almost cover as well and IMO, has a better all around game. I believe Romeo Crennel coaches him as well/

It not necessarily that they won't spend money, they won't do it on positions that they are already strong at.
I don’t forget if they have to meet a cap floor, signing your own players counts. They can always extend several of their good young players to meet the minimum.

IDK...with the new salary floor that has been discussed we need to spend a LOT of money in a very short time.
If I had to put an order as far as what we ‘need’ the list would go…
1) Posluszny
2) Hightower
3) Leach
4) Asomugha
5) Weddle
If I had to put an order as far as what we ‘want’ the list would go…

I ‘think’ we can resign all of our free agents and if my ‘thinking’ is right (that is a BIG IF) we will still HAVE to spend enough money to pick up 1-3 of the guys on my list. HAVE TO.
I dont think the Bills will let go of Posluszny
Especially if the have to get out of the Salary basement immediately.
I definitely see the Chiefs adding another receiver. It is kind of slim pickings at inside linebacker, and they will probably add at least one more lineman.
If I had to guess I would say one top end FA, two mid level guys, and re-sign Bowe, Carr, Hali, Flowers and use the rest as camp fodder.

Oh I absolutely agree on wanting to see Pos in KC red.
I don’t know that they’d be trying to replace him in BUF with a 3rd round rookie, though. At least, not in the immediate future.
Still, Poz and DJ in the middle would be pretty fantastic.

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Nice post. Can't wait for Free Agency, as I'm sure Pioli has a plan in place.
I personally don’t see much in Weddle. I didn’t watch many Charger games but I do recall a certain incident on Monday Night Football.. this #25 guy from the Chiefs made him look foolish on a 56 yd TD run, but hey who can blame him right?
Seriously though I’m down with Posluszny, I’ve liked him since he played at Penn State. At the same time, I was impressed with Jovan Belcher last year and I don’t know if Pioli will pay him what he may be looking for.
I hadn’t realized Hightower would be available, that’s actually an intriguing idea I had not considered. Leach would be an outstanding pickup in my opinion.
so far from the comments I've read above I'm very confused
I would without a doubt LOVE for the Chiefs to sign Leach. With him leading the way for Charles the most dominate rushing attack would be way more dangerous. The season hasn’t even started, and I think we are already more dangerous because of Baldwin. Simply because he will more then likely demand coverage more than anyone besides Bowe last year. Now think about arguably the best blocking FB in front of the best running RB. :-O DCs would sh*t themselves trying to find ways to defend that. Hands down Leach would be a BA addition…..GO CHIEFS!!!

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
My opinions:
Eric Weddle: A very good young safety will demand a pretty decent salary. Most likely in the 4-5 million dollar range and with both Brandon’s having upcoming contracts do you really want to have 30 million dollars invested in our DB’s alone? For a breakdown: Flowers (10 mill), Carr (10 mill), Berry (6 mill), Weddle (4 mill)
Paul Posluszny: The big knock on Paul is that he makes his tackles far away from the line of scrimmage. He gets a lot of tackles every year but mostly because somebody must make the tackles. He isn’t a hole plugging, block shedding, attacking inside linebacker. He is more of the DJ type that plays in space and roams making plays.
Nnamdi Asomugha: Again salary comes to mind. We already have two very good young CB’s that will demand big salaries, adding a third or replacing carr / flowers with Asomugha just doesn’t make sense to me.
Vonta Leach: Quite possibly the best run blocking FB in the league. He is experienced in the ZBS and he is great at opening holes for running backs. I’d like this signing.
Tim Hightower: He shows flashes of being an every down back and he is still fairly young. I just don’t think we need to add another RB this year. I think the staff would like to have JC, Jones, and McCluster rotate at RB. If we run a traditional I formation then there isn’t a spot for McCluster on the field. Rotating him at RB gets him on the field more and gives him a better chance to make plays.
Agree with a lot you said
While Weddle and Asomugha would be nice, they are not needed and probably cost more than we should pay. That said, I would not be opposed to Weddle since his price will not be too extreme. However, with all the teams looking for safeties and corners this off-season, I doubt the Chiefs will make a splash in the secondary.
I do agree that Posluszny may not be as good as his stats imply. Not to say that he is bad and at the right price, sure, bring him in. I don’t see it happening though because of the pretty nice crop of LBs in the next draft. Chiefs may decide to see what they have in Belcher and draft one next year.
I’m surprised no one has brought up Leach’s nickname, the Human Coke Machine. I would love this addition as he is a decent pass catcher and a punishing run blocker. Really, I’m for any of the big name FBs (Leach, McClain, Vickers), but Leach is a clear favorite.

Basically, Leach wants to be paid like the best FB in the league. Since Houston does a lot of shotgun and one back sets, they are unlikely to pay Leach. Maybe someone else can find out how much that would cost for Leach. I still think he is worth it and since we use a FB, it would make sense.

And I agree.
Asomugha wouldn’t really make a lot of sense for KC to pursue. Granted, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll stay in OAK by any means. But we have one of the better secondaries around, and dumping the kind of dollars Namdi is going to want when we have big re-signings of our own to make (Hi there Tamba, Flowers, Carr) – would just be frivolous.
I love it when division rival fans show up and speak knowledgeably.

Doesn't make sense only if you're bumping your head on the cap.
Great corners make for great defense. KC has good ones, no question. And Asomugha may not compute in Pioli’s across-the-board calculus. But this isn’t reaching for a guy to reverse your fortunes. This is the kind of player you add when you’re good, and aspire to greatness. EVERYbody’s job gets easier.

i am very confident everyone will come back except asomugha! in that case im hoping our other corners will step up! we didn’t drafty two corners for nothing! our offensive line is very thin and too young and a veteran presence might be needed, i know matt light from the pats is a FA so i wouldnt mind him! but i have high hopes for my team though at the moment we have to prove to ourselves. im not expecting playoffs but at this point, i just want respect
You guys' D line is straight nasty.
They manhandled our O Line last year. I wish they’d stop that.
Your O Line does need a lot of help, and some stability and consistent production from the QB position is still paramount to getting back into the playoffs. I’m still not sold on your WR’s overall minus a bright spot or two.
Very solid rushing game, can’t say anything bad there.
Overall, it’s going to take Al retiring / stepping away and keeping a head coach longer than a season or two before you guys are consistently a playoff threat again.
AFC West has been the joke of the NFL for quite awhile now. (The f’in chargers are our perenniel threat? Seriously?) – but we’re on the mend and hopefully the West will be relevant again sooner rather than later.
Chiefs - back in the playoffs in 2011.
I can see 'em chasing Asomugha as I've stated elsewhere.
I like Brandon Flowers, but I’m open to a CB with more size, in a division that loves to feature trees at WR. As others have said about our cover-2 and cover-3 “preferences,” I’d submit that those coverages are a tacit admission that you don’t trust your CBs to hold up. Those deep safeties gave Peyton Manning a good day for handing-off the ball. Our fear of what Manning could do to us in the air left gaping holes up front, that we’d all like to blame on the front 7, but maybe ought to be blamed on the 7 or 8 guys we kept off the line.
I like Kendrick Lewis, but I’m open to a FS with more speed. I think when the team is rounded out, he’s just a damn fine #2, who brings you something mentally that makes up for his so-so speed.
Did I miss the FA NTs out there? There’s a place the Chiefs might make some headway.
I think Pioli has been conservative on the FA front, because Haley needed to build a team culture, and they needed depth. I think the team is pretty deep, a professional culture has been established, and they can get more aggressive, without losing ground. This is no longer a crappy team that might be tempted to spend a fortune on one guy to perform miracles. They’re a respectable team that almost certainly gets better by plugging in TALENT.
I’m glad they didn’t spend up near the cap, while they were getting started. I think we all saw a team that clawed its way into the top half of the league, but really not much more than that. They had to leave themselves room to grow, and that’s what they did.

Reading the comments above, I just thought I’d say just because Asomugha doesn’t play a lot of zone (by design), doesn’t mean he can’t play it well. He did make the transition from safety to corner in the pro’s, so he must have some zone experience. Just a thought, I’m not sure where he would fit in your team’s plans, but I’ll obviously defer to you on that front.
(if someone else brought this up and I missed it, my mistake)

I like Leach alot but I don't get the optimism for him
When I say lets go get Le’ron McClain and people keep mentioning Shane Bannon to me in the other posts. McClain has been a proven fullback with the ability to run the ball. He is a guy who you can sign to play fullback and if he can outplay TJ in camp he is a great powerback. Leach is just a pure Fullback and according to some people we don’t need that. I personally would like Clabo and Aubrayo Franklin as top priorities.

I agree on Clabo and Franklin....
Plus a third receiver, they will get some ammunition for when they slap the franchise tag on Bowe.
I like Steve Smith (Giants)
Danny Amendola
Steve Breaston as my top three, but there are just too many quality WRs to not snag one up this season.
Mike Sims-Walker anyone?
I still love Jeff Maehl as an undrafted free agent. Perfect slot guy.
Heck get a crafty veteran like Lance Moore, or even craftier… Santana Moss.
I can’t wait for FA.
meh...
