Just checking in with the AP community here.
My apartment was right in the middle of the tornado's path and my girlfriend and I were in it. We lost everything in the apartment, but we are both alive and unscathed.
My girlfriend and I hid in the utility closet in the interior of my second floor apartment when the tornado hit. We heard the sirens and the power died, and then the entire sky turned pitch black. We sprinted into the laundry room and covered our heads with a sleeping bag. The whole room shook and we could feel debris falling on our heads, and we just knew that that was it, but amazingly we survived.
When we opened the door of the laundry room to what was the rest of my apartment, everything was gone. There was the eerie sound of hundreds of smoke alarms beeping in the apartments around me and car alarms and horns going off. Had we been in any other room of the apartment, we wouldn't have made it. I'm going back to the apartment today to try and sort through things.
I'm really hoping I haven't lost my Christian Okoye jersey.
I don't know if anyone here is familiar with Joplin, but the storm cut a mile wide path from St. John's hospital to Duquesne and utterly destroyed absolutely everything in that path. It looks like a warzone.
