Recently after the draft our GM Scotty Pioli was heard to utter words that had everyone talking as if the second round draft pick from Florida State would be our new center. I missed the comments, but from what I understand he adjusted what he said about Hudson, but everyone is thinking he will be our new center.
Then as we were discussing the o-line on another post I was struck with the idea that maybe it ain't so and Pioli was doing his usual draft excercise to keep us guessing about what is happening on the Chief's.
Scotty has shown he's a pretty knowledgeable GM and is well versed in what the team needs are. Last year we had an ancient, aging center who did good work for us. Now it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand we need a replacement for Weig's in the extremely near future. And that was last year before the draft. And Voila!, Jon Asamoah was drafted in the third round and automatically penciled in at guard, as that is what position he played in college.
This year the uncertainty at the center position is even more dire, and while some think it a sure thing Weig's comes back and mentors the next center while he extends his record for consecutive snaps, I am extremely doubtful that he ever appears in a game. I got to thinking about the need, it was known before last draft and was thinking Asomoah was the guy to be our center for the next decade. He is a highly intelligent man which a center needs to be, and he certainly has the physique to man up on those big nose tackles. Hudson may not be stout enough for that, and perhaps Pioli used some misdirection in his post draft conference for whatever reason he has.
It is true that Hudson has no experience at center as he played exclusively at guard, neither does Asomoah, but he at least practiced with the team at center last year and had Weigs' experience to delve into. Hudson has zero amount of time with Weigs or practicing with a pro ball club so I believe we might already be set for the future at center from the draft before last. This would seem to be a Pioli like move to address a need. Couple in the versatility of Jon A. who was seen having gained invaluable experience by playing some at guard last year, next to Weigs in game situations and it seems to me we might already have our center waiting to be called upon.
With the secrecy, or lack of information from the team, we can only guess at what will be. Will it be Weigman, Asamoah, Hudson or perhaps practice squad member D. Harris who takes the job? However this works out it seems to me we are in a better overall condition on our interior o-line than we have been for some time and I am looking forward to seeing the competition. What say you? GO CHIEF'S!!!
