Elliot Harrison: The right Steve Smith

Steve Smith ... as in the Giants' Steve Smith. His production the past couple of years has been better than any other free agent's. He's averaged more than 70 catches since 2008, and that's despite losing seven games last year to injury. He's also only 26. Here's the catch, so to speak: Even if Smith becomes an unrestricted free agent when there is a new CBA, it's doubtful the G-Men will let him walk, although he's coming off microfracture surgery. He's been running in the pool for a month and hopes to be ready by training camp, if there is one. Basically, this wouldn't be a Sidney Rice 2010 situation, in which the Vikings waited half the year to get their receiver back. If New York doesn't sign him, perhaps the Chiefs should roll the dice.

How would you keep all these receivers happy?!!!

Steve Smith would be awesome, though. He can definitely fill that role that Wes Welker is for the Patriots. Would be a great slot receiver. Only problem is, what about Dex? Scary offense, no doubt.

yep, limited touches that will include some carries....

we badly need another WR…since lets face it, no matter how good of a situation baldwin has, rarely does someone have a big rookie season at WR…Mike williams excluded

I keep seeing this argument, and I still don't buy it.

I mean, there are obviously plenty of receivers who don’t have much of an impact in their rookie seasons. But with Dwayne Bowe on the team, Jonathan Baldwin doesn’t need to have a Mike Williams type of rookie season. He probably doesn’t even need to make the kind of impact Dwayne Bowe made in his rookie season. Somewhere in my comment history I’ve got a big long list of recent rookie draft picks that made immediate impacts, but I’m not going to go digging for it. Needless to say, though, if he can be a DeSean Jackson, Percy Harvin, , Hakeem Nicks, Kenny Britt, Micheal Crabtree (crap, how good was that 09 draft class?), Dez Bryant, Austin Collie, etc. he could have a huge impact on this defense.

Remember, we don’t need to get him 100 balls this season. He’s very likely to be Cassel’s third option behind Bowe and Moeaki. And a lot the recent receivers that have been impact players for their respective teams were integrated into a corps where they weren’t under immediate pressure to be the number 1 option. Except for Mike Williams. That guy is a freak. But Nicks had Smith, Manningham and Boss in New York, Harvin had Rice and Shiancoe in Minnesota, Bryant had Witten and Austin in Dallas, Collie had Wayne, Clark, and Garcon, etc.

Baldwin is in a similar position. We have a great enough need that he’ll get plenty of looks, but we still have enough guys that there won’t be pressure on him to be a #1 receiver out of the gate. And you never know who else could emerge as another legitimate receiving threat to further spell him. McCluster will get more time in the backfield this year, but he’ll still see a fair amount of looks in the passing game. Kevin Curtis has been a very reliable target in the past and could still conceivably have something left in the tank. I have high hopes that Jereme Urban can bounce back from his injury in a big way. Plus Baldwin will be working with Todd Haley. A young receiver could do a lot worse.

So we don’t need him to be elite, we just need him to be a credible target so that teams can’t quadruple-team Bowe. I’m not so sure that we need another WR that badly. It couldn’t hurt to add another one or two in free agency, but they don’t need to be Steve Smith caliber.

and if baldwin goes down? heck even if he doesnt, a WR corp isnt made up of TWO players....

so imo…YOUR argument although well thought out….is something im tired of as well

since personally, I enjoy more than just 2 WR sets….We WILL be signing another WR.

Im on team baldwin, but Im also realstic and hedge my bets

But you don't sign a guy like Steve Smith for depth and to play the slot in occasional 3 wide reciever sets.

He’ll want a long term contract and starter money, and I’m not sure how happy he’d be being, at best, the third option behind Bowe and Moeaki, or, at worst, the fourth option behind Bowe, Moeaki, and Baldwin. You can only get so many guys the ball.

And, like I said, we have other options at receiver already on the roster. Dex clearly isn’t a number two receiver, but he can definitely play in the slot in a pinch, and I think could improve dramatically from last year. Jereme Urban was hurt last year and Kevin Curtis only had one week with the team, but both could play the role of the #3 guy and play #2 across from Bowe if need be. Tucker and Horne both showed flashes of potential last year, and could improve. So we have options.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t sign anybody, or even that those guys should consist of our entire corps heading into week 1. What I am saying is, you don’t sign Calvin Johnson to back up Larry Fitzgerald in case he goes down. I’m saying the guys we do bring in shouldn’t be big money vets looking for long term contracts as a #1 wide out. Sidney Rice, either of the Steve Smiths, etc. are just not worth the price considering what we need on this team – quality depth. Maybe we bring in Steve Breaston if he really wants to play for Haley and is willing to play even if he is eventually supplanted by Baldwin on the depth chart, but even then only for the right price.

We have cap space right now, to be sure. But we still haven’t signed Hali to a new deal, and Bowe, Flowers, Carr, etc. are next on the list. I’d rather spend the money on locking them down instead of dumping it into the receiving corps so that we can have as many as three #1 receivers on the roster. We need quality depth – guys who can play well in the slot and in 4 or 5 wide receiver sets and, in a pinch, across from Bowe in 2 wide receiver sets.

And while I’m sure you do enjoy seeing more than just 2 WR sets, we ran a lot of 2 and 3 TE sets last year due to our run game and now Haley has a shiny new toy in our new pass catching full back, Justin Bannon. I’d guess you’re still going to see a lot of 2 WR sets next year, no matter how many great receivers we have on the roster.

I would rather have Lance Moore then Steve Smith.

Smith will command alot of money and we don’t need another stud, we need an effective and good value slot guy like Moore who can also contribute on ST.

I don't think this Steve Smith is going to be really expensive.

I really would have liked this pick before the draft, but receiver is not really pressing anymore. Save their money for Abreyo Franklin and David Harris.

No David Harris.

Inside LB Jets. He is underrated and I believe he is a free agent (may depend on new CBA rules).

What about Santana Moss?

Has a history with Zorn and at 32 years old when the season starts might not demand a huge contract.

I like him in the slot better than Dex

But I don’t see it happening. I think Pioli is content with our WRs, but a 1-year deal for Moss would take some pressure off Baldwin in his rookie season and give him another veteran mentor to learn from.

Different style of WR then Baldwin, but quality vet to take pressure off Baldwin to assume the #2 role immediately and give him competition

Steve Smith is an effective and sure handed slot guy

He fills the role just as well as Lance Moore would do. However, I think Lance Moore wants to stay in NO whereas I agree that Steve Smith may be looking for money. I am not sure how well that will work for him since he was injured last season.

I love this move

I have been wanting Breaston, Smith, or Amendola.

Steve Smith would be an excellent addition and there is no reason they can’t pull in a D Jackson, A Franklin, and one of those receivers.

The Chiefs have the room depending on the new CBA. This move is chain mover.

Not sure he fits in here.

I see the Giants re-signing him. Also it seems unusual for guys playing in big markets like New York to switch conferences for a small market team, although in the end I suppose they go where the money leads them. Just don’t see this happening.

So if they take Smith whats that say about Bowe?

WR is the biggest position of need on offense. We have Bowe, who showed what he can do last season, but also showed that he’s still adept at dropping as well.

We don’t know what we have in Baldwin yet, he’s never taken a snap, and his best receiving year in college never crossed the 1000 yd threshold.

Spending is something we’re going to have to do if we want to become a contender. Smith isn’t worth #1 money, because he’s not a #1 WR. But he’s worth #2 money for sure. And I’d definitely pay him, because he’s worth what he brings to the table.

We’re building through the draft and thats great. But its clear its going to take more than the draft to solve all of our problems.

2011 hopefuls: A new CBA, followed by a good draft, accented by a great season. In that order.

by shotty on May 14, 2011 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Bowe's drops?

You mean when he didn’t drop any at the end of the year? The drops aren’t the problem, it was the double coverage because we had nothing outside of him to threaten the defense. We may not know what we have currently with Baldwin, but with us picking him, I think that was a hint that we’re not targeting FA WRs.

At the very least he’s not coming cheap, he’s going to want #1 WR money, even if he’s only literally worth #2, and on the open market someone will pay that to grab him.

Overspending in FA however does not equal success, if that were the case the Redskins would be a Dynasty. We’re going to do what we always do, especially in this weird season. Hit up the waiver wire, or sign guys like Lilja, journeymen to fill holes until we can upgrade that position through the draft.

I largely agree with you

but Pioli isn’t necessarily after “just” the journeymen type guys. Remember, last year they chased Boldin. But, Pioli is smart and he has his top figure firmly in mind before the chase and sticks to it.

CHIEFS DYNASTY – we’re kind of a big deal

by kabrink on May 14, 2011 6:52 PM CDT up reply actions

We need FA help, we have our core, we need to add to it to reach its potential

We’re picking up good to great pieces with journeymen like Lilja, Jones, and Shaun Smith, but we still need help at other areas like WR, RB, OT, NT. Ryan Harris ILB, Aubrayo Franklin NT, Steve Smith WR, Matt Light LT…any of those guys would help us become a better team.

We’re not going to sign all of them. We may not sign any of them. We don’t go out and drop the bank to acquire the highest profile player. Thats why we’re not Washington. And somehow Steve Smith seems a far cry from being that record contract setting “Elite FA” so that comparison is pretty weak.

If we signed Smith to a solid contract, I think he’s a more reliable target than Dwayne Bowe. And yes, Bowe had a great season, but not until after he dropped several balls that hurt us in big ways. His ability isn’t in question. His consistency is.

I’m for bringing in Steve Smith. But not for breaking the bank. If he wants too much then we won’t take him. Simple as that.

2011 hopefuls: A new CBA, followed by a good draft, accented by a great season. In that order.

by shotty on May 15, 2011 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions

During his sophomore season in 2009 he made 54 receptions for 1,080 yards and eight touchdowns in the regular season.1 including six catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns against Cincinnati in the final game with the conference championship on the line, but Pittsburgh lost by one point.2

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Baldwin

by Chiefphish on May 14, 2011 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

If that is true, then why doesn't he fit?

I just read above he’s a wes welker type. Sounds ideal. Please elaborate. Dex’s ideal place is to make mismatches in coverage, much like Leonard Pope. He can also return kicks as needed, and line up at RB for various purposes. Having true position players across the board would let Dex fulfill his potential when and where he is needed and no more. Which for Dex is ideal.

So if you don’t think having a starting caliber slot is good, tell me why. Or if you don’t think Steve Smith is not the guy, tell me why.

Thanks.

He fits perfectly if we run a similar offense to what was run when Priest Holmes was the featured back

3 WR, 1 TE, 1 HB.

Perfect offense for zone blocking, gives JC the one cut and go running lanes he uses best, also gives JC the underneath routes that Holmes feasted on in his 1st season with the Chiefs.

Moeaki can stay in and help block or be a viable receiving option.
