The Kansas City Chiefs made the running game a priority in 2010 with RB Jamaal Charles and RB Thomas Jones. Chiefs head coach Todd Haley has confirmed that they expect Jones to return in 2011 but the Chiefs are also keeping an eye on other running backs.
According to Pro Football Talk, the Chiefs will have an official visit or private workout with Louisville RB Bilal Powell. the 5'11", 207 pound running back had a career year in 2010 rushing for 1,405 yards and scoring 11 times. He also held a Jamaal Charles-esque 6.14 yards per carry. He runs the 40-yard dash in the 4.5 range and had 18 reps on the bench press.
He didn't work out at the Combine because of nagging right knee and hamstring issues. He also came up limping with a hamstring issue on his second attempt to run the 40-yard dash at Louisville's pro day. There were 20 teams and reportedly eight running back coaches at the pro day. No word if the Chiefs were there.
That he's had some injury trouble could be an indication the Chiefs are checking him out to get a better idea of where he is physically. Often times, that's the most important part of the pre-draft process.
Powell is already on our draft interests chart as the Chiefs made contact with him at the Senior Bowl. He's considered a mid-round pick. Also meeting with Powell are the Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons, New York Jets, New England Patriots, Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins.
