Nobody has a clue about the Chiefs Pick
We all have ideas about who the Chiefs should draft. However, among the people who make their living following the NFL, none can gain a consensus on who the Chiefs will take. At least last year, the consensus was either Russell Okung or Eric Berry. The year before it was a consensus that the Chiefs would take Aaron Curry. But this year?
I just compared a few mock drafts and here's where we are:
Mike Florio at Profootballtalk: Nate Solder OT
Steve Wyche at NFL.com: Phil Taylor NT
Pat Kirwan at NFL.com: Mike Pouncey OG / C
Bucky Brooks at NFL.com: Akeem Ayers OLB
Brian Baldinger at NFL.com: Anthony Costanzo OT
Drafttek.com consensus draft: Derek Sherrod OT
Peter King CNNSI: Gabe Carimi OT
National Footballpost / CSN: Gabe Carimi OT
Rob Rang CBS Sports: Akeem Ayers OLB
Chad Reuter CBS Sports: Nate Solder OT
If anything the consensus is that the Chiefs will go Offensive Line in the first round, this even though Pioli's tendency has been to draft linemen later in the draft, his one notable exception being Logan Mankins. The offensive line assumption is based on our offense collapsed at the end of the year, however, our defense couldn't stop the run at the end of the year either so why isn't there more of a focus on NT or an inside run-stuffing linebacker? Or how about the fact that Cassell had D Bowe and no #2 speed receiving threat? Or the fact that Thomas Jones was worn down by the end of the year and showed his age, when Charles got hurt against Baltimore it was over we didn't have any answer at RB.
So maybe Pioli surprises us like the last two years and takes Mark Ingram if he is there at #21. I'm not going to be shocked with whoever Pioli takes cause I didn't see him taking Tyson Jackson and I thought he might play it safe with Okung as opposed to Berry and McCluster and Arenas were total shocks since most of the "experts" figured those two for 3rd round picks at the earliest.
So come this time next week, I think we might have some new Chiefs that none of us expected.

So many possible positions...
As long as our first pick is not a TE, RB, or S I think I’ll be okay with whatever Pioli chooses. I can get behind any of the guys listed above (though I’m really struggling with Solder). If Pioli thought QB was the right pick or CB…I’d be surprised, but not devastated. I think that when Saturday ends, I’m going to look at his choices and be pretty pleased.
I'd give my left pocketwatch to see Blaine Sumner dead lift 800 lbs in a Chiefs jersey.
I would be fine with
TE and RB in the first as well. We are all looking for the impact 1st rounder but we may not draft one. We will more than likely grab the good to solid player that’ll be a key building block.

I dunno. I place very high value on DB.
There are some good-sized DBs with coverage skills in this draft. If Amukamara slipped to #21, I’d be sorely tempted. Nice bit in Game Changers by Torrey Holt about lifting weights the week before facing James Hasty. “Hasty is a MAN.”
I realize this next isn’t directly responsive, but even Aaron Williams is tempting @ #21, and there are some guys like him I might not let past me if they fell very far into the 2nd. A guy who can come up and play inside leverage when the blitz is on, and be a big help over the middle when you’re in zone. Guys like that can give you something special when you’re facing that San Diego Forest of WRs, allowing you to jam outside and blitz Rivers all day long, which nobody else has the guts or ability to try.
would of ≠ would've
Carr can already do that.
Flowers can do it against a wide swath of NFL WRs, but he can lose his way in the woods.
would of ≠ would've
The way Flowers plays, he'd be a kick-ass FS in the pattern or as a blitzer on those plays when you make the switch.
Nice thing is one more DB like I’m talking about, and KC can DO things like that, without changing personnel.
would of ≠ would've
Kendrick Lewis has some potential of bringing that.
But he has to stay healthy and still has to prove he could do that kind of thing convincingly for an entire season. He wasn’t quite the same player after the ankle injury.
would of ≠ would've
CB's sprinkled throughout this draft
and when the quality beef runs out we can grab some cover guys.
did you know?
we get 6 guys out of the top-150 players :)

It all depends.
I can see liking CB better than anything else I see @ 21, if there’s a run on other positions, and the (a) right DB is still on the board. But if one of those big-fast WRs slips, and he passes the Psych test, I’m cool with that.
But talented and disciplined big men are a pretty rare bunch, and the most good KC can do early is in the trenches, preferably BPA over PON. I’d be just as happy with a dominant interior lineman, who’s a mainstay for 10 years, as with an OT who may or may not realistically challenge, for instance.
would of ≠ would've
I think I've changed my mind
I’d like to see us try to trade back a bit to grab him but if we can’t I’d be really excited with Stephen Paea at #21. I don’t think you’ll find a harder-working, better-conditioned, stronger NT prospect…
Ryan Succop will be the kicker for the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl
This informed my decision

Strong enough to play 2-gap, certainly quick enough to play 1-gap NT, or even slide out to the 5-tech

No no no! talking about Paea is baddddd

And by far the strongest man in the draft.

No. The strongest man in the draft is Sumner, from Colorado School of Mines.
And not just a bench press pheenom, but set records in the squat.
would of ≠ would've
heh. A D-II player with an engineering degree from a strong engineering program.
If you haven’t seen his highlights, you really should. Probably won’t change your mind on anything, but he’s a freak athlete who looks like a helluva late-round flyer.
would of ≠ would've
Is Paea not just a little short for a 3-4 DE?
"Hair cut time.''
by Steve_Chiefs on Apr 26, 2011 11:16 PM CDT up reply actions
Correct.
And what I’m hearing about him as a NT is he’s top-heavy, and would require some sculpting to make it at the next level. I went so far as to say I’d rather take the iron-pumping pheenom from Mines later, than take Paea that early. But maybe I’ve just been following your early posts on this subject too slavishly. When it comes to drafting NT, unless somebody slips, I’d be doubling-up later on NT, and maybe take a flyer on this Sumner guy.
would of ≠ would've
I'll check him out...thanks.

cool, I read Paea set the combine record with 49 reps of 225.
Your saying Sumner did 50 or more?

It’s hard to imagine that kind of strength.

and then be a complete bust on the field. lol.

I just feel like KC is wrong-footed for Paea.
I think he’s likely to be gone by the time I’d be willing to spend a pick on him. Too much sculpting required. If he slipped to the 3rd, I’d be more interested in him.
would of ≠ would've
Paea will go late 1st to a 4-3 team. great player for 4-3.
Very good in a 3-4. Just not best value to spend a #1 on.

Well, after today's news
it’s a good thing that nobody knows what we are going to do. The poor slob that will be picked on a small market team like the CHiefs deserves at least a couple more good nights sleep. I wonder if we can get Shaun Smith back if we buy him Gates BBQ as part of his deal?

Small market teams have the same salary cap but lower costs of living.
You’re going to make the same amount of money playing for KC but it cost so much less to live in KC. A player’s money goes a lot farther living in a smaller market city.

5 more years of berry and charles...woot
Team Pioli/Haley. Decade of the Chiefs.
Team Colquitt
the only thing ive seen that lines up
is that if we take an OT, Soldier is the exact OT pioli likes.
as for the pick itself, no freaking clue
if I had to bet money…
phil taylor, torrey smith…pouncey…soldier…but I would feel like it was the worst bet ive ever made.
no clue. Ill say what every fan of a team between 20-27 says…lets trade back!

Hopefully not Soldier. He was beat like a drum in the Sr. Bowl. He is a project.
If we take a OT, I hope it is Camiri, Castonzo, or Sherrod.
I am beginning to think the pick will be a surprise. DT Paea or Austin, WR Smith, OLB Reed or Houston.

Solder would fit that, actually. Anyway, OL is probably the toughest position to play well in the senior bowl. That event is worthless anyways, except for the practices.

I usually avoid draft posts
and mock drafts. I try not to worry about them until they get picked on draft day.
It's turning out to be a very competitive situation.

*When we blitz, have the LB's do a KC Strip. Do this in remembrance of DT.
There's no way he could. All he can possibly know, is that he's on a list of 21 men.
He’s got to watch and then react on draft day. He’ll know the 21st pick, about 7 minutes before we do.

I'm leaning towards Pouncey or Solder in the 1st and Taylor or Powe in the 2nd.
I think Taylor could fall that far now.

Carimi, Pouncey or Solder rather...whichever one is left....and one of them should be there.

Carimi >> Solder
And is more the type of person the Chiefs like… however, I think an OT at 21 would be a mistake,
How do you select a guy who's already been picked?
Carimi is GONE by 21.

If there's a big, fat run at QB, OLB and NT, OT might be good value.
But I think there’d be more value, then, at 5-tech, and I wouldn’t be afraid to go that route, if the right guy was still on the board. I think we were talking pro’s and con’s on Wilkerson in a current thread. I think a great DLineman could change our whole take on the KC D, be he NT or DE.
would of ≠ would've
Dude...there can't be a big fat run at 3 positions in the first round.
I don’t think in 20 picks…that’s possible. Check the math? Unless I’m not getting your meaning here.
""I Have Sworn Upon the Altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the minds of fans." `Cosmo
That's kinda the point.
There WILL be some very good values. No way all the best players are picked-over before 21, and a decent chance that a lot of reaching for PON leaves some EXCELLENT values at 21, if KC isn’t set on PON.
would of ≠ would've
I think Pioli and Haley are set on POR.
Position Of Revenge. And will seek to expedite Barry Richardson’s replacement by taking Carimi or Solder at 21.

And I really don't blame them one bit if they do.

But I think Carimi is gone before we pick...like just before..at pick number 20.

Lets hope for a run of QBs in the 1st. It will push some quality choices down and even further increase opportunity to trade back.
I’d love to see pioli with two #2s and two #3s.
2a) SOLB B. Reed, Az or S. Acho, Tx or J. Sheard, Pitt
2b) NT Powe, Miss
3a) WR G. Little, NC
3b) C/G Moffitt, WI
4) RB D. Thomas, KSU or CB R. Carmichael, VaTech or ILB KJ Wright, MsSt or TE Jordan Cameron, USC 5a) OT W. Smith, E. Car
5b) FS R. Sands, WV or CB Jalil Brown, CO or TE Julius Thomas, Portland State
6) NT C Neild, WV
7) RB A.Allen, GaTech or DB or ILB or project QB or Basketball playing TE.

I was thinking the same thing.
Let there be a crazy run on QBs, so we can build team.
would of ≠ would've
So we need a run on Punters, Kickers, QB's, RB's, CB's & Safeties....
and problem solved. Okey dokey then. :)
