Arrowhead Pride has teamed up with Bud Light (Give 'em a Like on Facebook here) to count down the Kansas City Chiefs greatest NFL draft successes and failures. We're almost through the successes as we come to No. 4 today...
During this series, the question of what an NFL Draft success really is has come up a number of times. And the answer to that question is that there are many definitions. You have your Jared Allen value type picks that benefitted the Chiefs for a few years. You have your Neil Smith type picks where the front office thankfully didn't screw up a top draft pick.
And then you have players like Will Shields - great value and a Hall of Fame calibre career.
When I asked you all who the Kansas City Chiefs' greatest draft successes were, many of you in the comments stated you felt Shields was the greatest draft pick every by the Chiefs. Even though he comes in at No. 4 on our list, an argument can be made for Will Shields to be No. 1.
Shields was a mid-round, third round pick in the 1993 NFL Draft. He played all 14 years of his NFL career in Kansas City, where he remains active in the community today. This past year, Shields was awarded the Walter Camp Football Foundation Man of the Year award. On that day, Joel said of Shields:
The 74th pick in the 1993 NFL draft was a damn good one for the Kansas City Chiefs. They got a guard, Will Shields, who went on to 12 Pro Bowls and started a franchise record 223 consecutive games and at one point had the longest active consecutive games streak behind Brett Favre. It's safe to say the Chiefs got their money's worth with him.
- No. 10 - Kevin Ross
- No. 9 - Neil Smith
- No. 8 - Brandon Carr
- No. 7 - Willie Lanier
- No. 6 - Buck Buchanan
- No. 5 - Jared Allen
