Since we pick at #21 this year, it's almost impossible to know who will and won't be around. Sure, we know guys like Titus Young will be there, and that Marcel Dareus won't be, but that doesn't really help us at our spot. I've heard a lot of people saying we should trade back, and there is certainly merit in that idea. You can accumulate more picks, and although this team has vastly improved it could still use another influx of talent both on the starting lines and for depth.
This isn't a mock draft or a place where I'm really going to pound the table for a certain player. It's more just my view on what I think our overall strategy should look like. Continuing on...
I think this team has a few positions of overwhelming need (future C, backup QB, SOLB, NT, WR) in no particular order. Almost all of us can agree on that. Some of us feel we also need an upgrade at the tackle position overall, using Richardson as a swing. While I don't totally agree with that, I can't shoot down that theory either. The game is won and lost in the trenches.
However, with all that being said, I think we should trade up if somebody who Pioli and Co. really likes falls to around the Jaguars pick at #16. I would personally be fine with giving up a 3rd round pick if we could move up and get a guy that Pioli really wants, rather than a guy he's unsettled about at 21. Now, he may feel fine about someone that should drop to 21, and then this is all academic.
Another thing to consider is Daquan Bowers. I know he's a 4-3 DE, but if he knee is healthy, is there anyway he could be converted into an OLB. I understand he couldn't cover in space, but the man has freakish abilities. Even if he couldn't be converted, if he's available at 21 does a team trade up to get him at that spot?
I like the trade up in this draft. I don't feel it's particularly deep, and I'd rather have a stud in the first than a sub in the 3rd. I believe you win championships with top end talent, and sometimes you have to make risks for it. Everyone knows I'm a huge Aldon Smith guy. If he's there at 16 and they don't feel he'd make it to them at 21, trade up. So what if we give up a pick? Sure it's a risk, but life is all about risks.
I hope Pioli is proactive like he was for Moeaki last year. That paid huge dividends. We shall see in 6 days.
