Hey guys we did a live draft over at mockingthedraft.com over the last 3 days and i wanted to share my picks with you all. Trades were allowed in this draft but with the way the picks fell nobody was wanting to move up to 21. I tried more trades in the second and couldn't get any biters so i stayed pat and took the player i felt was bpa at a position of need. Without wasting further word space here are the picks:
WITH THE 21ST OVERALL PICK THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS SELECT:
PHIL TAYLOR NT BAYLOR
After trying in vain to move down in the 1st i had to take the best player i felt could impact our team not just this season but in 3 seasons. Taylor's ceiling is as high as he wants it to be and hopefully with our conditioning team and Haley riding him to stay in shape we could have a pro bowl NT in 3 seasons.
Taylor is an athletic NT that when motivated can absolutely dominate the line of scrimmage. He has shown the ability to penetrate the line and get after the QB and shown flashes of being able to anchor and disrupt the line of scrimmage. Solid lateral movement and strength at the point of attack allow him to cover his 2 gap assignment. I do think he will need to be in a rotation his first season and maybe used like Ngata and moved to 3-4 DE on passing situations because he has the ability to get after the QB.
THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS SELECT JON BALDWIN WR PITT
I know people are going to say that he doesn't fit this so called "right 53" but imo he does. He does have off the field issues a bit and he has an attitude. But he loves football and he wants to win. He wants the ball in his hands and he wants to be making plays for his team every week. He bashed his QB at Pitt to the media which is a big issue but that QB at Pitt is absolutely terrible and honestly players should hold each other accountable. Baldwin has the size to be a huge threat in the red zone and he excels at streaking down the sideline, using his body to shield defenders, and going up and getting the ball with his 6' 5" frame and 42" vertical.
THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS SELECT MARCUS GILBERT OT FLORIDA
Our offensive tackle depth is a huge concern and we need to get someone capable of playing both sides of the ball. Gilbert is moving up boards and could go late 2nd round, we snag him in the mid 3rd. Gilbert can challenge Richardson and Albert in camp and hopefully he helps push Richardson to being the player his talent shows. We then have Gilbert as a swing tackle in case of an injury to Albert or Richardson. If Albert struggles again this year Gilbert could potentially be a starting LT in the nfl allowing a security plan for Albert.
THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS SELECT K.J. WRIGHT OLB MISS ST.
The Chiefs need to add speed and athleticism to their linebacking core and although not a developed pass rusher K.J. Wright is a high upside OLB'er. I see him as a Manny Lawson type OLB where he isn't going to dominate the pass rush but he will cover his lane, he will cover TE's and RB's and he can get the opportunistic sack with great closing speed on the QB. He needs to put on a little bit of strength to be able to hold the point of attack at SOLB but he and Studebaker can rotate his first year and let the two battle it out for playing time adding quality depth at a position of need.
PICK A: THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS SELECT JAKE KIRKPATRICK C TCU
Kirkpatrick is a ZBS center in the NFL. He is technically sound, intelligent, more quick than strong but can hold up to strong NT's, and he has great size. He should have a year to learn behind Weigmann but even without i wouldn't be opposed to him starting as a rookie. It could be a little rough but with Veterans like Waters and Lilja right there it should ease the transition.
PICK B: THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS SELECT KELVIN SHEPPARD ILB LSU
The SEC is the toughest competition in the country and Sheppard was a playmaker in that conference. He clogs his running lane and he is sound dropping into coverage and reading the QB's eyes. I believe he would take the spot from Belcher in camp but at the very least he is great on special teams and is quality depth getting Mays off the roster. Also in big games it seems that Sheppard turned on another gear and was just so disruptive.
THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS SELECT KEVIN RUTLAND CB MISSOURI
The chiefs need to get talented big corners to combat the big WR's in the NFL. Rutland is 6' 1/2" and 190 lbs and runs a 4.44 40 time. He is very talented as an athlete and is solid in mirroring WR's in man coverage. He needs better technique and strength in Bump and Run and more discipline in zone coverage but as a big CB i see him having a ceiling comparable to Brandon Carr.
THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS SELECT NATHAN ENDERLE QB IDAHO
Ideal size and solid decision making / accuracy his senior year at Idaho. He will probably never be the guy at QB but he is a good backup QB prospect with prototypical size and great accuracy.
