Phil May Be Staying In Texas. What Would YOU Do?
Here is my bold prediction for the 2011 NFL draft: Phil Taylor will be drafted by one of the teams in Texas early in the first round.
*******************************************************************************
I know many of us would like to see PT in KC but I don't see that happening. It would be nice to have a true nose tackle in the middle of our D-line. But the Cowboys or the Texans will both take a long hard look at him and one of those teams will draft him. I know that the Cowboys already have a solid NT in Jay Ratliff but it would not shock me if Jerry Jones decided to draft Taylor. He provides depth and extra beef to their line. And now the Texans have switched to the 3-4 defense too. They have a lot of great pieces to their young defense. They don't have a true NT and Taylor would fit in nicely. Since Waco isn't too far from either city I'm sure that both teams have been keeping an eye on him. And when the 21st pick rolls around, Taylor will be long gone.
*******************************************************************************
So what now? What do the Chiefs do if Phil Taylor is off the board? Better yet, what would YOU do if you were drafting for the Chiefs at #21?
Ryan Kerrigan would be my choice. He's an excellent pass rusher (12 sacks in 2010) and he's also known for forcing fumbles. If he becomes a Chief then I can see the KC-strip coming back to life.
********************************************************************************
Again I ask you all: WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Share it with us.

Draft Ayers
But Dallas would be well and truly reaching if they took Taylor, and Jerry is a more BPA type GM. I know Houston will need a NT, but I think they either look at Amukamara if he falls or OLB.
I don’t Taylor will be gone by 21. If he is though, It has to be Ayers for me. Team captain, position of need. fits SOLB great.

bah
Assuming he’s there, I’d draft Pouncey since we don’t even have a C. And then I’d draft Marcus Cannon in the 2nd because he has an awesome name.
We technically have a NT and we have LBs. We don’t really have a C and the worst thing anyone can say about Mike Pouncey is that he can get beat by bigger and stronger linemen. Thanks, Madden. Even if Wiegmann comes back, he’s like 78 years old and relatively small for a C. Time for fresh beef.
Pouncey has issues snapping the ball
No center that has that issue will be drafted in the first round

He will be eventually but it will take a couple of years.

Pfft
What guy in the draft isn’t a walking work in progress? Has trouble with the shotgun snap? Great. Sounds like a job for 1000 reps. I’ll take working on football over working on fitness.

so, there was this guy who couldn't touch his nose with his finger
he tried and tried, but just couldn’t do it … finally he finds a doctor who does help him out, and he practices … and practices and practices and practices
Doc tells him to keep practicing and when he can touch his nose with his eyes close 10 times in a row he gets an ice cream cone!
so he keeps working at it: eyes open, then eyes closed … you got it, 1,000 reps later he has it down cold … goes back to the Doc and shows him how good he can now touch his nose with his eyes closed
Doc gives him an ice cream cone and the guy promptly brings it up really fast … right to his nose

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
Our only "technical" NT right now is Toribio.
I don’t know anyone who feels good about that.

Only way Phil Taylor gets drafted by the Cowboys or Texans
is if he makes it to the 2nd round.
I would like a Royale with Cheese
I don't think we would draft PT regardless -
1. (21) Akeem Ayers OLB UCLA:
Looks the part – showcases outstanding edge burst. Ideal combo of size and athleticism. Had 6 INTs in his last two years, 2 of which were returned for TDs.
2. (55) Jerrell Powe NT Ole Miss:
Outstanding size and raw ability.. the prototypical 2 gap/2 down NT. Would have been a 1st rounder last year but fulfilled a promise to his mother to stay and graduate.
3. (86) Edmund Gates WR Abilene Christian:
Former hoopster who attacks ball in the air; a ‘hands’ catcher. May be the fastest WR in this years’ class. Explosive, with great acceleration – a legitimate vertical threat.
4. (118) Jake Kirkpatrick C TCU: Tough, hard worker. Played for a top program.. handled Phil Taylor in conference play and did well in the Senior Bowl. A finisher; can easily be groomed to take over Center.
5. (135) Owen Marecic FB Stanford:
A hammering lead blocker who initiates collisions. Physical, very well built. Exceptionally tough – very smart and passionate. Versatile; can potentially play SILB.
5. (139) Pat Devlin QB Maryland:
Led Blue Hens to FCS title game. Quick, over-the-top release; good arm strength. Can buy time with feet. Poised leader, with adequate field vision. Good caretaker.
6. (199) Kealoha Pilares WR Hawaii:
Thickly built slot guy who can work inside the numbers – catches on contact and gets upfield. Good hands; adjusts to ball well. Pops out of breaks with suddenness.
7. (223) – Lee Smith TE Marshall:
A big, strong blocking TE who could bulk up to play OT. NFL pedigree.. Plays with an attitude – fiery competitor. Runs through contact. Makes contested catches.
I want a SOLB @ 21.. our NT @ 55;
Best remaining WR in the third round.
Then an OC, QB, OT, S, and RB for depth.

Jake Kirkpatrick never played Phil Taylor in conference play
And Pat Devlin played at Delaware, not Maryland. Having said all that, this draft would kick ass I agree with Bajah07, this is by far the longest mobile comment in the history of AP.
It is what it is and we are who we are. Deal with it.

You're right!
TCU is in the Mountain West, I was thinking about the old Southwest conference – good catch.
Also, I was thinking Delaware and wrote Maryland. Those states must be close to each other.. ;D

I think Taylor clashes significantly with the Dallas employment of the nose
There’s a big difference between a Ratliff and a Taylor in terms of the role one or the other would play. Making Taylor an early pick would probably have to come with the intention to seriously switch up the way that line works.
As for Ayers, I really wasn’t all that impressed with him in the 3-4 games I saw him play. I haven’t been paying any real attention to him in the off-season, so I suppose I completely missed why he’s suddenly become so popular, but I’m a little confused about why he’s getting the early talk.

well, what I';d do all along is ... draft Derek Sherrod :-)
What do the Chiefs do if Phil Taylor is off the board?

hi, Mo! 5 minutes!!!
in my mind, Sherrod - if he's still there at #21 - is the BPA
not to mention would be killer great anchor for the line for years to come … not to mention super-high character, not to mention very intelligent both on and off the field, not to mention hellaciously good blocker, not to mention didn’t allow a sack all year (in the SEC and in post-season games), not to mentioon …
well, you get the idea
now Taylor … apparantly there’s some “issue” with his feet (see fanshots) and that’s on top of “character concerns” and … well yanno what? who needs him? a year ago nobody … NOBODY … thought Ron Edwards could man the NT spot, so we got Shaun Smith but he ended up filling in more at DE when TJax was hurt
granted this year is different than last, but I don’t see Taylor as being “the answer” … nor do I see him as a #1 pick, espcially at #21

I would start by laughing at the Cowboys or Texans.
The Chiefs would be reaching for Taylor at #21. Where the Cowboys and Texans are drafting? That would be dumb.
Cowboys – They will be the ones to draft Kenrick Ellis. He will shortly there after be arrested on gun and drug possession charges.
Texans – After missing on Taylor in the 1st (as he will go to the Chiefs or Jets), the Texans will reach on Jerrell Powe. Powe will provide no significant presence, and most people on Arrowhead Pride will forget about him.

But if one of those teams DOES draft Phil Taylor
1. Akeem Ayers – OLB – UCLA: Plays the game like a younger and more athletic Mike Vrabel. Reads the play well and makes excellent adjustments to get into position. Prototypical SOLB for the 3-4.
2. Jerrell Powe – NT – Ole Miss: A reach in the 2nd, but there is almost no chance he’s available when we draft in the 3rd. At his best, he looks to be a solid player. However, hasn’t looked his best in over a year.
3. John Moffitt – G/C – Wisconsin: Versatile interior lineman who has said he wants to play C. If that doesn’t work out, we have another solid depth player at G.
4. Ricky Stanzi – QB – Iowa: I usually list him at 5a, but I’m starting to think that’s going to be a stretch. Stanzi improved a lot from 2009 to 2010. Easily the most technically sound QB at the Combine.
5. Anthony Gray – NT – Southern Miss: I don’t think Powe’s fall from grace is without merit. A second NT would be a sound investment. Gray is explosive and could be ready to take on a major role by mid season.
5. Tori Gurley – WR – South Carolina – Strong and intelligent. A solid possession WR with limited big play ability. Won’t blow anyone away, but he finds the 1st down marker.
6. Alexander Green – RB – Hawaii: Physical runner who can also provide a home run threat. Needs to learn how to be a RB and not just a runner.
7. Mark Legree – FS – App State: Athletic center-field type. Good speed and strength will allow him to contend for most passes. Runs a little stiff and needs to develop technique.

There's no way the Texans pick Taylor in the first round and if they do Gary Kubiak and friends should be immediately fired.
They have two potential Wade Phillips scheme NTs on their payroll already and have a much bigger need at OLB. On top of that they have the worst defensive secondary in the league.
Dallas might but again unlikely. Jerry Jones is slowly turning into Al Davis 2.0 and leans more towards the BPA on draft day and Taylor, that early would be a pretty big reach at a position of not much need.
"Success is never ending, failure is never final."
I'd #@$%$!
Crap! I tried to log in last night, but Windows 7 had an alternative plan of action. But here’s my take. If Wilkerson, from Temple, is still on board, I’d just shrug my shoulders. Wilkerson would do at NT. If Wilkerson’s gone too, I’d make every effort to trade down, to the point of passing until (if need be) #33, just after NE picks. Hopefully, while sitting there & twiddling my thumbs, somebody might realize that if they want a QB, they’d better get back into the first round. I definitely would not draft an OT @ #21. Even an OLB at that point would be questionable, in my mind.
