Having the unfortunate draft position in picking in the top 5, which gives us a shot at some studs who were able to start from day 1 in the last few drafts, spoiled us into thinking we will find a starter with our first pick. Now we get to see how well Pioli can do with finding talent at later picks. While most of us think it is a sure thing to find a starter at pick 21, I believe that might be a little bit of a stretch.
It's true that our GM is highly regarded for his drafting abilities but with the holes we are trying to fix, finding a player at pick 21 who starts means we address 1 of 2 positions in my opinion. Most feel that we have 4 to 5 glaring holes at the following spots: OLB,NT,C,RT and WR. Arguments and debates have flourished over these positions of being THE primary need. It is my belief that we will draft either a T or OLB, as those particular positions will most likely have starting caliber players when we draft, unless we trade up. By starting caliber I am speaking of a guy who is the starter from day 1 of the season.
The other positions usually have a transition time which would preclude them from this equation of drafting for a starter. My personal observation is the Center prospects in this draft are not good enough to be starters on day 1. Ditto for Nose Tackles. The WR need is more of an enigma to me. There are 2 or 3 guys who may have the ability to make the jump into starting at day 1, but generally receivers have a difficult time doing this. Pioli is known for following his own drummer so to speak, and can surprise us by drafting a position which we think isn't a priority need leaving us scratching our heads---again.
Personally I have been on record for wanting a Tackle, but it is not that important for me to be right as it is for Pioli to be right and find a player that makes the lineup on day 1. I have no say in what Pioli does and will be shouting for joy over whom he chooses or cussing him for being a stupid sob come draft day, like I have done for a few decades of Chief's drafts. With Pioli at least I am starting to have more than hope, I am getting to the place of faith that he will do better than previous GM's have done. So with this drafts talent I expect either a Tackle or OLB, what say you? This seems simple to me regarding the talent this year and the needs we have. Go Chief's!!
