Three Chiefs Don't Get Tenders Including Ryan O'Callaghan, Jackie Battle
We now have news on seven of the Kansas City Chiefs restricted or exclusive rights free agents. According to Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star, three Chiefs were not offered tenders including RB Jackie Battle, OT Ryan O'Callaghan and FB Tim Castille.
It's possible these players are re-signed when a CBA deal is completed.
As for Battle, if the Chiefs do move Dexter McCluster to more of a running back role, Battle would have been at best the fourth man down on the depth chart behind Jamaal Charles, Thomas Jones and McCluster. I still like him as an extra running back, though. I wouldn't be shocked to see him back.
As for O'Callaghan, he was injured at the start of last season and never regained his starting job from Barry Richardson, so he was a backup as it was.
As for Castille, it would appear Mike Cox won this battle (although, to be clear, we haven't confirmed Cox received a tender). What's interesting about Castille is that he conducted a radio show in Birmingham, Ala. this week and talked like he was coming back.
Others who have received tenders, as reported by Teicher, are OT Barry Richardson, CB Brandon Carr and DE Wallace Gilberry. LB Cory Greenwood signed a one-year contract as well.
This now means we're waiting for news on: TE Leonard Pope, C Rudy Niswanger, QB Brodie Croyle, TE Brad Cottam, FB Mike Cox, S Reshard Langford, CB Maurice Leggett, and LB Corey Mays.

yeah, the more I think about it
the fact that they weren’t tendered doesn’t mean too much… there isn’t any risk of ANYONE signing with another team until a new CBA is reached… at which point, KC could just sign the players they want to keep.
So, the tenders went to the players with SOME risk of being signed by another team…
the ones who haven’t been tendered arent’ going anywhere, and could be signed (or not signed) depending on what other acquisitions the Chiefs make in the draft/FA
Prediction: KC will not draft a LB before the 3rd round
agreed
I for one will not worry about those players because I believe our staff will make the right decisions.

yep, they are on my list of "could go either way"
once the draft class and (hopefully) FA are added, the roster gets really crowded, really quick.
I’m glad that the “fringe roster” guys are less repulsive than prior year fringe players… this group can actually play on an NFL level… the 2009 group.. not so much
Prediction: KC will not draft a LB before the 3rd round
Stupid question...
Can we talk to available free agents that have not been released by teams? or does the CBA have to end, or a new one signed beforehand?

Problem is
Battle always wins a roster spot by looking great in preseason, but doesn’t get the chance or capitalize on it during the season. It’s been the same with him almost every year.
They must be willing to take the chance on using that roster spot on a new player to develop. Battle plays a lot on ST though I think, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back either.
3GChief = 3rd Generation Season Ticket Holder
he capitalized in the games he got a shot in
the 4th down play in one of the games later on in the season comes to mind. His td leap, The Buffalo game. He didnt get many chances during the season because they were messing with Jones and McCluster. Battle can easily fill the hole Jones will leave when he leaves. IMO he’s more of a power back than Jones and he’s just as fast
But he's not as all-around.
I THINK what’s limiting HIM is what he does when he doesn’t get the rock. Apparently there are other guys they’re rather see blocking (lead or pass-pro).
This signature is way better than my last one was.
When
did he ever show anything that would make people think he could be an NFL running back? That is like saying Dex is the next Jackson.

by Raiderhater1 on Mar 4, 2011 12:31 PM CST up reply actions
He's obviously shown the Chiefs for several years in a row and even survived the regime change
Point was, I think the Chiefs may be ready to move to someone with an upside that can actually develop.
3GChief = 3rd Generation Season Ticket Holder
41 carries
is what they think about him as a RB…
He was a good ST player but was never counted on to run the ball. After 4 years you move on from that…
by Raiderhater1 on Mar 4, 2011 12:32 PM CST up reply actions
Again, I think it's limitations in other areas that may be the stumbling block with Battle.
Think about how awesome JC is as a runner, but how HE needed to round out HIS game before Haley gave him more snaps. We can talk about being thrust to the fore by LJ’s expulsion, but there were also some key developments in JC’s game, before Haley gave him many snaps. I remember him being PATHETIC in pass pro in ’09, but much improved by the last quarter or so of the season.
This signature is way better than my last one was.
I agree
that he didnt get enough carries to get a full view of him, but the only time he did anything was in the preseason vs scrubs. After 4 years of “development” I cant say that I have seen anything that we couldnt get from a 5th round specialist. I think you can replace him very quickly and see if someone else can develop. I cant see Battle, after 4 year, finding that light switch.
Did you watch the Jacksonville game?
apparently not or you wouldnt be asking that question….they took Jones out, put Battle in and didnt miss a step
Really
ONE game, IN A BLOWOUT! He had 3 carries for 12 yards… You have a REALLY low standard.
So your saying that you think a guy that goes in at the last drive of a blowout and gets 4.0 ypc is the next TJ? Wow why did we ever get rid of Thigpen? He was the next Steve Young!
Go back and watch EVERY other game he has EVER carried the ball in. I will take ALL of those of your 3 carry 12 yard game!
by Raiderhater1 on Mar 4, 2011 3:44 PM CST up reply actions 1 recs
Uhm I was just using that game as a reference cause it was the one game he got more than 2 carries
I could reference the other games where he had only one carry….would you like to jump down my throat about it being too small of a sample size before I bring it up? nevermind the fact that I never said he would be the next Thomas Jones…someone else said that. I just think he can fill the role. that was a nice little rant there about thigpen and all…but not really
Hopefully this means that we've got our eye on someone at RT
Probably doesn’t mean much that these guys were not tendered but I hope it means that we’re going to be upgrading at RT.
I'd be fine with that
My thought:
IF they don’t want to spend a 1st on Taylor, and Kerrigan / Aldon Smith are gone…
I’d want Sherrod or Castonazo at #21

Or maybe, Joel, they're thinking Richardson is going to be a stud swing tackle, behind somebody better.
But looking at Pioli’s pattern from NE, it appears that he’s content with being “just OK” at that right tackle spot, and Richardson is at least that.
Another reason I’m looking for OT upgrade is looking at all the DEs in this draft. “Good” at tackle might not be good ENOUGH in the next 4 or 5 years. Looks like d-line is stealing a march on o-line in the talent department, currently.

Hey Tark
Not questioning, but rather wondering, what is the controlling authority. If the CBA expires and a player is not under contract, what is it that prevents the teams from signing players? Thanks in advance…………….
As I understand it...
There were provisions agreed to in the previous/current CBA that bounds both sides to certain obligations even after the CBA expires and there is no new agreement.
For example, if the CBA expires, the NFLPA cannot decertify for six months, because that was what they agreed to. (Or maybe it was just the suing part, but it still applies.) That’s why it’s important that if they’re going to do it, it has to be done before expiration.
I believe the same thing exists for stuff like free agency and even the draft. Of course, even beyond that, the owners could simply agree amongst themselves to cut off transactions without a CBA, but I don’t think that’s the case here.
Resign ≠ Re-sign
If we've been talking to McClain
we’re risking losing a draft pick, not something the Pioli regime is willing to do for a FB
Back on the Sione Fua bandwagon.

I'm pretty OK with this list
If we just brought back those that have already received contracts or a tender I wouldn’t be upset, the rest seem to be depth at best…and the problem last year was lack of quality depth.
Disagree, with possible exception of the safety position.
The problem was with the STARTERS. A few or several of the kinds of guys we’re talking about will be the quality depth behind better starters, if things go as hoped.

Castille>Cox
Cox didn’t receiving any playing time till end of the year. Castille is a more versatile player, can catch out of the backfield and play HB if called upon. Cox is a one trick pony. The entire position could use upgrading but between the two I’d take Castille

not sure I agree
I’d go with the better blocker… how many carries and receptions did the “versatile” Castille have in 2010?
Cox can catch the ONE play I’ve ever seen KC run for the FB, that little pass out into the flat.
Prediction: KC will not draft a LB before the 3rd round
Yes. Cox can catch the ball outta the backfield.
He’s not been convincing as a lead blocker, yet. And he’s not been impressive in pass pro. Castille is a do-the-dirty-work kind of RB. I’m not sure if he’s a good runner or not, because I’ve never seen him presented with a good situation in his very limited touches.
Our current OL executed very well, except in the sustaining of their blocks. They were where they were supposed to be, but ?physical? limitations made the seams they open snap shut VERY quickly. Thomas Jones, who’s quicker than any of those bigger backs, wasn’t quick enough to the hole on numerous occasions. Those were holes that only a Jamaal Charles or Chris Johnson (or healthy Dexter McClluster) could exploit.
This signature is way better than my last one was.
When that one trick is the most important trick a FB has I'd take the one trick.
Castille cant block very well and that’s kind of a FBs #1 responsibility.

Yes to replace them both
But Cox was our FB. If we are going to replace him bring in an upgrade. Castille in my opinion is not an upgrade. Actually I could see us bringing in one good FB and dumping both opening up another roster spot.
You say that...
But Cox didn’t even play in half the games, so I’m not sure why you’d say he was our FB.
I too would love to see the Chiefs bring in McClain one good FB to replace both of them. I see no reason to carry two FBs, unless one is on the practice squad.
Resign ≠ Re-sign
Well apparently we're going to be employing
Cox blocking for the forseeable future.
And I don’t see McClain being a FB, he’s leaving Balt because he wants to be like Peyton Hillis.

Neither Cox nor Castille know where they'll be playing.
As far as McClain, I didn’t take it that he wants to be a featured back. Or I should say, I didn’t take it that he’d only be satisfied being a featured back. What I took from his comments was that he doesn’t mind blocking, but he also wants to get some carries. I’m fine with that. A blocking FB who can run will only help the offense.
Resign ≠ Re-sign
McClain would be a serious upgrade.
I’d love to see a pro set become the norm for the Chiefs. I like having the two players in the middle of the field, threatening both wings and the middle. IMO, the main reason we haven’t seen a whole lot of 2-back offense is because KC doesn’t have a (more) dominant WR opposite Bowe, and the extra TE also helps the O-line.
This signature is way better than my last one was.
I would easily
pay $4mil/yr for McClain. I have said this many times. He would take the spot of 3 players. He would be our 3rd RB as well as our FB on the plays that require him. Imagine the depth at other positions with that.
He was our FB
before Haley brought in Castille. Point was Castille should have never been brought in unless he was an upgrade.
I’m guessing Haley thought they may push each other and one would emerge as the clear choice. (Didn’t and don’t think its going to happen).
I think we keep Cox until we secure another FB and maybe through camp and then cut him loose.
To MY imperfect eye, Castille looked a little more NFL-ready than Cox.
A little more sure of himself. I discount a LOT for the poor situations Haley was willing to put him in.

With FB Tim Castille go looks like we might draft one...like Anthony Sherman
When I saw him at the combine I did so research on the guy, and he impressed me more than Owen Marecic.
Than I watch all of the combine and gave a closer look when he did his drills and look much better than all the FB in the combine, he blow up the bench press and he ran an great 40 time for some that build, at 245+ pounds; he had quick feet for a FB at the combine and caught ever pass thrown to him.
Look at some videos on him he can also line up as a TE in running and short yard plays. Also was a special team AS and a Team Captin for the last 2 years a UCoon.
Looking at the Jets running game last year, they had a step forward thanks to John Conner their 250+ bulldozer.
I think he is a perfect fit for our running game and also can be Sr.Check down for Cassel, also his personal bodygard on deep passes…
Well that what I think, what do you think….

I like Cox as a FB...
but we still need to upgrade that position. In fact, use the FB a little more vice merely throwing a one-back set at the defense all the time. I think with a more efficient FB, Charles would have a helluva lot more yards and Jones might actually gain more than 1 or 2 yards a carry. I do wonder whether they’ll actually give up a tender for Cox. I just made myself chuckle. In fact, I can see the headlines now…
