2011 NFL Mock Draft: The New England Patriots Select...

The 2011 Arrowhead Pride Mock Draft continues with averagegatsby choosing for the New England Patriots at No. 17...

Few teams dominate the draft like the Patriots do; they are able to get impact players throughout the draft and their team continues to click along without even really missing a step. The Patriots excel in finding the right players for their system, not only do they overachieve annually in the draft, but this year they also have an embarrassment of riches in draft picks this year.

Star-divide

With all of these picks the Patriots have a number of places they could look, they could look along the interior offensive line to replace the recently retired Stephen Neal, they could look at OLB to find an athletic playmaker to help stop the run, they could look for a WR to spread out the defense to open up the field underneath for Wes Welker, or they could look at the wealth of Defensive line prospects in this draft to shore up their defensive line to help stop the run, which is what I think the Patriots will do. I believe the Patriots will draft a DE for 1 basic reason... Great teams start at the ball and work their way out, building a solid foundation making it easier for the rest of their team to do their jobs. And the Patriots have a history of doing this by haven taken 4 offensive/defensive lineman over the last 10 years.

Which is why I think the Patriots will take:

Muhammad Wilkerson, the monster 6'4" 315lb DE/DT out of Temple.

This pick both allows the Patriots to beef up their defensive line, and is also a way to replace Richard Seymour whom they traded to Oakland and got this pick in exchange, so if you think about it, its kind of poetic that they replace Seymour with one of the picks they gave for him. According to Football Outsiders the Patriots defensive line was ranked 21st in defending the run according to their stat adjusted line yards. The Patriots already have 2 stud defensive lineman in their 3-4 scheme. Wilkerson could play both a DE (and be a beast of one) or hold down the fort at the NT allowing the Patriots to be even more creative in their defensive schemes. Wilkerson is athletic enough to take on double teams, and large enough to hold his own against them. He also terrorized QB's racking up 9.5 sacks his junior season and adding 13 more tackles for loss. Some will see this as a little bit of a reach but Wilkerson is getting tons of play recently and if any team has the luxury of reaching it's the Patriots.

Nice pick

I think it’s easier knowing they have another top pick at the end of the first, but you can’t go wrong here with a DE. They already have a solid team so they can’t go wrong in a lot of areas but they need to build the front up and become a more solid defense if they want to get back to where they were when they were winning superbowls.

There's no dollar sign on a peace of mind, this I've come to know. So if you agree, have a drink with me, and raise your glasses for a toast.

With Kerrigan, Watt, and Quinn still available?

It’s not that I don’t like the Wilkerson pick, I just think he’s more likely to be available when they draft again at #28 than any of these guys.

Agreed, he’s much better then a guy like Robert Quinn, who’s going to be a total hack, apparently.

If this actually happened in real life, a guy like Quinn falling to the Chiefs, would you take him??

Meh

To me there is only one way to answer any Pats pick, regardless of who it may be….meh

Too true

I can guarantee those three will be gone within the next five picks

Another pick down which means another pick closer to the Chiefs drafting Phil Taylor.

Honestly

I agree with the hype that is surrounding Phil Taylor on AP. Iv been watching someGreat NT play lately on Youtube. True Nose Tackles change the way a Defense plays. Especially when ya have someone like Derrick Johnson running sideline to sideline. Taking away the running game for the middle of the field has a huge impact on the entire game. Thats why I say We have To get A NT first Then a LB.

Ha.

I’m waiting for someone to take him ahead of the Chiefs pick just to see who we would get then. Who’s going to do it?

RUN DEXTER RUN!!!!

Well, if they did

That means we have (at least one of) Kerrigan, Watt, or Quinn still on the board. Not to mention Carimi and Sherrod who have some support around AP.

As of right now, I think the Chiefs are in a can’t lose situation…can’t wait to see how we screw it up.

And Robert Quinn just keeps on falling.

Apparently that year off of football is hurting his draft stock in this mock.

Pats fan here

good pick. We have 4 needs. OLB, OG, OT and DE. All of those are interchangeable in Pats fans minds, so we basically believe that in a mock with no trades, we’d take BPA at one of those positions. In reality, the Pats would have traded this pick to the highest bidder for Robert Quinn. In the mock, I have Watt rated higher than Wilkerson, and Carimi would be a great pick as well, but you can’t really go wrong. The only reason I choose Carimi here is because 2 of the OT’s are taken already, making it very unlikely that the Pats would get one of those OT’s at 28. Address O-Line before OLB at 28, then whoever you want at 33. Good job!

The other night I ate at a real nice family restaurant. Every table had an argument going.

I like the player and the position but he will be there when they pick at 28

Good write up though.

Im not sure he will be... Teams have been trying him out right and left lately...

And like I said the Pats can afford to reach, and its unlikely they trade down, to be honest If I were a team and the pats were trying to trade with me Im not sure I’d do it, just because its the Patriots.

Meaning he will obviously fail miserably

Or that Kiper is currently spooning the kid’s agent

by mushin on Mar 30, 2011 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Kiper isn't actually any less accurate than any of the other guys...

He really doesn’t miss on guys any more than NFL teams or other mock drafters do. It really is a guessing game.
