We continue to track the Kansas City Chiefs players that are heading into the 2011 season without a contract. The Chiefs haven't been able to make any transactions since the first extension of the CBA way back in the first week of March but we haven't yet figured out all the players they're trying to keep.
We have a new name to add to the list -- FB Mike Cox. He said in an interview with The Patriot-News (via Arrowheadlines) that the Chiefs tendered him. He's entering his fourth year so he will likely be restricted no matter what happens to the labor deal.
So here's a review of what has been reported about the Chiefs without contracts. The usual caveat applies -- we don't know what the next CBA will say. But my early guess is that we'll have the same rules as 2010 which means you need six years of service to qualify for unrestricted free agency, or else you'll be restricted and eligible to be tendered.
Signed a one-year deal: LB Cory Greenwood.
Franchise tag: LB Tamba Hali
Tendered at some level: DE Wallace Gilberry, CB Brandon Carr, OT Barry Richardson, S Reshard Langford and FB Mike Cox.
Not tendered: FB Tim Castille, CB Maurice Leggett, OT Ryan O'Callaghan and RB Jackie Battle.
[Editor's note: Just because they're not tendered doesn't mean they can't re-sign with the Chiefs once the new labor deal is done.]
Restricted players we're not sure about: TE Brad Cottam, QB Brodie Croyle, TE Leonard Pope, LB Corey Mays and C Rudy Niswanger.
Unrestricted players we're not sure about: NT Ron Edwards, DE Shaun Smith, WR Terrance Copper, S Jon McGraw, C Casey Wiegmann, LB Charlie Anderson, WR Kevin Curtis, CB Travis Daniels and LB Mike Vrabel.
So that's 14 players we don't know about including some pretty significant names like Ron Edwards and Casey Wiegmann. I'm pretty anxious to figure out what the Chiefs will do with all these guys so here's to a new labor deal getting done as quickly as possible....
