Chad Ochocinco Coming To Kansas City
I bet you didn't expect to see that headline today, did you?
No, it's not a joke. Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco is indeed coming to Kansas City -- except it's not for the Chiefs.
It's for Sporting KC, Kansas City's MLS team.
NFL players are in a lockout right now so they're free to work wherever they want. For Ochocinco, that apparently means soccer. He'll be trying out for the team next week from March 22-26.
We haven't heard of Chiefs players getting any new jobs and I can't imagine any of them could find something as unique as this.
(Yes, I know this isn't really Chiefs-related but, hey, it's the offseason)

FYI
Don’t know if you’ve heard, but he’s going to be Chad Johnson again. Apparently he’s tired of the Ochocinco thing. Not sure if it’s legal yet, but it’s in the works. For what it’s worth…
He said he wasn't changing it back to Johnson

Maybe he will just drop a last name entirely.
On the back of his jersey it will say “Chad”

Or just change his entire name to
85

Really?
I heard an interview with him on ESPN, talking about the Carson Palmer situation. Toward the end, he claimed that he was changing it back to Johnson. Who knows…
Yeah I heard that, too
He came back later though and said he wouldn’t change it back.
by Joel Thorman on Mar 16, 2011 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions
Did he?
I hadn’t seen any follow-up comments from him on it, but I’ve been a little out of the loop.

Yeah.
He was asked about it shortly thereafter, and he said something like, “Really? I said that?” Then when pressed, he said he wasn’t going to change his name back.
Resign ≠ Re-sign
Was he high during that interview?
I think he even commented on how ESPN will have to get all their stuff updated. Strange.
I hadn’t heard about the follow up stuff or the retraction. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
I think it was probably an emotional reaction.
And later, after he had time to think about it, he changed his mind.
Resign ≠ Re-sign
That could be said for just about anything he's ever said

I'm really disappointed he hasn't taken Zbikowski up on the offer for a charity boxing match
Of course, I would consider the beating Z would give him a charitable act in and of itself.

With the lockout
this gives me one more reason to get interested in soccer…
With the 5th pick in the 2010 draft the Kansas City Chiefs select Eric Berry of Tennessee!
I'm sorry, but I HATE the name "Sporting Kansas City" for our soccer team.
It’s stupid, and some marketing “genius” probably got paid a wad to come up with it.
I’m still going to call them the Wizards.

Not a fan either.
It’s pretty much MLS wide though. They are following the naming trends over in Europe. A couple variations, but all the same type of thing.
But how exactly does one "sport" Kansas City?
by RA_ChiefsFan on Mar 16, 2011 1:00 PM CDT up reply actions
Don't think of it as a "name"
Many teams around the world are given “club names” that are more indicative of the type of organization and its location. Giving a nickname to a team is actually a pretty American concept.
Manchester United and Manchester City are two different clubs in the English Premier League. Neither team has an actual “name”.
A lot of MLS teams in the US have been doing this for a while: FC Dallas, DC United, etc. Believe it or not, this actually gives the MLS a little more credibility on the international stage.

I can understand that.
But couldn’t they have picked a better word than “Sporting”? Manchester’s “united” says they’re strong, playing as a unified team, but what is Kansas City? They’re sporting, just doesn’t sound intimidating or competitive.

I remember reading something about it...
…it’s meant to indicate that they are going to expand to a stable of sports I think. Unfortunately I don’t remember where I saw it, or I’d cite the source. Just a random afternoon of odd web research.
Well, not to sound ignorant..
but this IS the USA. I, and probably most sports fans here, prefer the way we name teams. Why would MLS try to appeal to European soccer fans? It’s an American league and it’s already established and respected with international competition.
Should we also dump the name “soccer” and start calling it “futbol”?
I’m still calling them the Wizards. Sporting Kansas City sounds totally ridiculous and un-American. It doesn’t really even make sense.

Regarding Chad formerly known as
Ochocinco who was formerly known as a total Johnson who was friends with that Purple Rain guy who was formerly known as Prince even though he was kind of a queen who was formerly known as an unpronounceable symbol who once saw Andre Bad Moon Rison who was pissed off and wanted to be Spider Man who didn’t like Credence Clearwater Revival who was fronted by John Fogarty who was influenced by John Sebastion who was named after Johan Sebastion Bach who was no relation to Barbara Livingston Seagull who had formerly been Barbara Bach who had been enamored with Kwai Chang Caine who was aka David Carradine who killed himself by sexual asphyxiation……..wait………..WTF? Maybe it would just be easier if football players weren’t so full of themselves………..just a thought.

Chad is good at soccer but...
even if he had a sucky tryout they would put him on the team for tickets and publicity. Also he would be the biggest and fastest player on the field at all time, scary.
But how well is he at falling down...
whenever someone is within five feet of him? I’ve come to realize that’s a very important part of soccer.
The fact that this guy has a good chance of making the team tells you all you need to know about MLS.
Resign ≠ Re-sign
His chance of actually making the team:
<1%. Seriously. I’ll eat my words if I’m wrong, but I’m not.

Not one correct fact, there.
There is less than a 1% percent chance he will make the team, the team has already outsold their average 2010 attendance in 2011 season tickets alone, so they’re not looking for a tickets boost, and while he might (MIGHT) be the fastest player on the field (of which he will almost assuredly never reach), he will not be the biggest. He’s 6’1’, just short of 200 pounds. There are a handful of players on KC’s team alone that are 6’3" or taller, and nearly the same build. Soccer, ESPECIALLY in MLS, is a much more physcial sport than you want to give it credit for. He will get pushed around, kicked and knocked to the ground much more than even he wants to think he will.
For all the “soccer is a girl’s sport, it’s so easy” talk that comes from football fans, there’s a hell of a lot of skill necessary in the game, and not just any football player, or “pure athlete” for that matter, can just waltz in and just take over like many anti-soccer fans would like to think. The guy’s got some skill, but it takes hours and days and months and years to hone the skills that professional soccer players possess. His tryout will be less than stellar, and he’ll almost 100% never appear in an official MLS game. Give the sport some credit, or at least find out for yourself before completely discrediting it, just because you don’t know about it, or you remain ignorant by personal choice.

What a crock
Here the players are crying about player safety and this idiot is going to try to play soccer on a team where the average pays is $104K.
Heck why doesn’t he just buy the team. Not sure what it would fetch today, but Lamar sold it 5 years ago for $20M.
