His decision to stay in-house and promote offensive line coach Bill Muir to offensive coordinator might end up being a legacy decision by head coach Todd Haley in Kansas City.

I don’t think Haley -- who finished third in the NFL coach of the year voting this week after leading the young Chiefs to a 10-6 record and the AFC West title in his second season -- is anywhere near a crossroads in his Kansas City career. I think he is in solid standing. However, if Muir’s stint as offensive coordinator in Kansas City is a short one, Haley will be saddled with a reputation as a coach who can’t work with offensive coordinators.

What?

The dude is almost 70 years old. How can he have a long stint?

Good point!

And one reason why I’m against the hire, even though it may work fairly well in the short term.

If it helps us grow some good, young coaches, I'm for it.

I’m looking at you, Sirianni, Anderson, and QB-coach-to-be-named.

Bill Muir is a “meh” decision, because while he gives us a proven data-gatherer, sounding board, and sometime playcaller he doesn’t grow the franchise.

BUT…having his old head to bounce ideas off of, may be good for some of the younger coaches on the staff.

Thoughts on QB coach: Who do we know that’s a young, Pennsylvanian who knows QB’s and has ties to the Erhardt-Perkins offense? It’ll either be someone who fits THAT description, or one of Haley’s two mentors (Dan Henning or Chris Palmer).

I disagree that Muir is a sometime playcaller.

He said today that he’s never called plays on offense, and I wouldn’t expect him to start at the tender age of 68 years old.

But the rest of what you said makes me a little optimistic.

...so he hasn't. I just checked his resume; he was Gruden's Offensive Office Manager.

Beyond that, I don’t feel “too” terribly bad about this. Disappointed…but not bad. And I’d still like to see Chris Palmer, or one of his proteges, brought in as QB coach. Sirianni’s good…but having another, experienced passing game coach on staff, especially one who’s used to Haley and the E-P offense, will help.

Nifty article though.

I thought it was an interesting read.

I found this interesting:
Weis called the plays in 2010 and the Chiefs were successful. However, in Week 3 prior to a 31-10 win against San Francisco, the rest of the staff worked together on the game plan while Weis was ill. The Chiefs ended up having one of their better offensive days of the season, so there is confidence that this group effort could work.
